Every year, the Rainbow Family gathers on the 4th of July in a remote mountain meadow to pray for world peace an exercise demonstrating unshakeable faith in a positive future despite the challenges such a venture entails. In We Love You, meet a few of the eight thousand people who peacefully assembled at the 2008 Rainbow Gathering in Wyomings Wind River Range. Visit some of the myriad camps created to support the two week long campout and experience a few of the many activities some positive, some terrifying. The film opens with a basic explanation of the Rainbow Gathering: a leaderless event that culminates in a morning of silent prayer for world peace on the 4th of July. In a series of interviews, gathering participants share their unique perspectives on what the gathering is and a brief history of how it came to be. Interspersed with footage from the first gathering in 1972, the attempts of the government to stop that gathering have mutated into oppressive police tactics in the present. Aslan of the Granola Funk theatre provides guidance on how to build a performance stage in the shape of a giant bird using only hand tools. The Warriors of the Light crew opens their hearts and kitchen using food preparation as an opportunity to be part of the gathering and make new friends. At the NYC Purple Gang kitchen, Steve shares the ways in which his relationship to water is transformed by living, as gatherers say, on the land. See a world without cars, mechanized tools or electricity all of which have been left in the parking lot to create a space where, according to Bohdi, magic can happen.
As the cleanup crew sorts scraps of junk for reuse or recycling, they ponder the meaning of living lightly on the earth. Every night after dinner circle, Dave focalizes the Angel Walk a yogic meditation on trust and the joy of loving yourself and those around you. And always, homegrown music graces the ears and shouts of We love you echo off the hills. The aspen trees, boulders and grassy meadows dotted with yellow flowers serve as a backdrop to enchanting days.
But even paradise has its dark side.
The United States Forest Service Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs) arrive in mass with handguns and tasers, stalking through the woods as soldiers in a war zone while unsuspecting children play in the background. Then LEOs roar through the crowd on All Terrain Quads wearing masks straight out of the Blade Runner. Garrick talks about the presence of the LEOs before an angry ranger threatens the family over the size of a fire pit. Gatherers try unsuccessfully to explain the techniques that will be used to renaturalize the spot. We Love You captures this juncture of peace and power: gatherers hauling supplies and making music while rifle carrying LEOs lurk in the woods waiting to make their move.
When the LEOs detain a man in the heart of Kid Village on July 3, the family practices peace by trying to Om the situation into a state of calm. As people shout We Love You, an LEO shoots indiscriminately into the crowd with a Launcher rifle. The family struggles to protect their children and heal their wounded while trying to process what just happened to them at a peace gathering. Meet some of the witnesses and hear about the struggles these Americans face to engage in this peace prayer and preserve our constitutional rights of assembly.
The next day, the wounded join their brothers and sisters, young and old, in silent meditation for world peace and the positive evolution of humanity leaving only the sound of the wind rasping through the aspens. When the vibration of the Om rises from the meadow, people hold hands and the costumed children parade into the center of the family. As the ritual completes, a celebration begins and people revel in music, dance and watermelon. The film ends as it begins, the beautiful boulders and aspens silhouetted at sunset and family shouting We love you to the night sky and humans singing songs around the campfire as humans have been doing for thousands of years.- Karin Zirk
