With The Expendables 3 expected to shoot towards the end of the summer, it looks like Sylvester Stallone has found his man to take the helm for the action blockbuster’s third outing.
Stallone did it himself on the first film. Then he drafted in Simon West to take the chair for the sequel. And now it looks like Australian director Patrick Hughes is set to get the job for The Expendables 3.
Taking to Twitter yesterday, Stallone teased a number of clues as to the identity of the new director, before finally announcing that Hughes was his choice for the job, recommending the director’s feature debut, Red Hill.
Rent Red Hill. Great Movie!! 500,000 budget 20 day shoot, Amazing – Rocky was 850,000 and 25 days , Good Omen!!!
And also recommending his short film, Signs, which you can watch below.

The first five hours of Frightfest day two were all about horror legend Tobe Hooper and the day kicked off with his rare debut film Eggshells. Made in 1969 Eggshells is an early experiment from Hooper. Testing out techniques and experimenting with form Hooper misses more times than he hits but overall the film is interesting and one that when viewed in the context of the year it was made and as an early fragment from Hooper’s career, absolutely fascinating. The film is receiving a release soon and I can recommend checking it out and if you’re a Hooper fan, it’s an essential purchase.
Following that was his incredible The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. What more can I say that has not been said before, the film is astonishing. Hooper then took to the stage for a Q&A where he regaled the Frightfest audience with stories of working...

Since when did the revenge genre explode? There must have been a boat that missed, but hey, can I jump aboard now? One of the most buzzed about films at the Efm was Patrick Hughes' Aussie thriller Red Hill, which stars Ryan Kwanten, from HBO series "True Blood", as a cop in a remote town dealing with a convicted murderer seeking revenge. Arclight Films has sold UK rights to Momentum with several offers already on the table for U.S. Hughes broke on the scene with his YouTube short Signs. Beyond the break you can watch an impressive teaser trailer, read the full synopsis and dig on the festival one sheet.

Back in 2000, young filmmaker Patrick Hughes had completed the ambitious self-funded short film, The Director, which he was hoping to adapt into a feature film. After numerous stops and starts, including Gabriel Byrne agreeing to star in the film, the project fell over. Hughes went on to direct the Tropfest winning The Lighter, and signed on with commercials production company Radical Media as one of their select team of directors. More recently, in 2008 Hughes directed the Schweppes promo masquerading as a 12 minute short film Signs, which not only won an award at Cannes, but has become a YouTube sensation.
