The duo behind Sinister, Doctor Strange and The Black Phone, Scott Derrickson and his frequent partner C. Robert Cargill have set up shop at Screen Gems, Deadline reports tonight.
The idea behind the pact? To bring new genre films to movie theaters.
Specifically, in Deadline’s words, they’ve “signed a first look deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment to produce feature films for Screen Gems under their Crooked Highway banner.”
“We first got to experience Scott’s talent with The Exorcism of Emily Rose. From then on, he and Cargill have excelled in reinventing the genre space by pushing boundaries and tapping into people’s deepest fears. They have an incredible ability to connect with (and scare) audiences. We feel lucky to have them here at Screen Gems and look forward to creating hits and breaking new boundaries with them at our side,” said Ashley Brucks, President, Screen Gems.

We don’t know very much about The Gorge, the latest film from Sinister, The Black Phone, and Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson. Announced a year and a half ago, it’s an Apple Original Film coming our way from Skydance Productions and has Anya Taylor-Joy (Furiosa) and Miles Teller (Top Gun: Maverick) in the lead roles – and it has just earned a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board for intense sequences of violence and action, brief strong language, some suggestive material and thematic elements.
Taylor-Joy recently told the folks at Collider that she was drawn to The Gorge because “I was really excited to work with Miles [Teller]. We’re all good friends, but we’ve been wanting to work together for a really long time. I think I was intrigued by the fact that it was semi genre-less in the sense that it was both a...

Exclusive: After successfully launching the Extraction film franchise at Netflix, director Sam Hargrave has his eyes set on another potential franchise with a piece of IP that is revving its engines to get out the gate. Sources tell Deadline that Skydance and Mattel Films have closed a deal with Hargrave to direct a live-action movie based on Matchbox, Mattel’s iconic real-world die-cast toy vehicle line. David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper are penning the script.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce alongside Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films. The project will be shepherded by Aimee Rivera for Skydance and Elizabeth Bassin and Andrew Scannell for Mattel Films.
The iconic Matchbox brand was invented in 1953 by automotive enthusiast Jack Odell to solve a challenge for his daughter, who was allowed to take a toy to school only if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have, in less than 15 years, established themselves as the most exciting composers working in contemporary film.
Their first score was David Fincher’s masterpiece “The Social Network.” The score was a haunting, atmospheric triumph, and it won them Oscars, an even more impressive feat given the Academy’s historic anti-rock band bias. And what began as an exclusive collaboration with Fincher soon blossomed outward – they have worked with Pixar and Ken Burns, scored a prestige TV version of Alan Moore’s “Watchmen,” and an animated “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie. They can do it all, while remaining uniquely them.
They are unstoppable, too. This week “Challengers,” from Luca Guadagnino, is released alongside their soundtrack album. And they have a pair of scores still coming this year – for the big-budget Apple movie “The Gorge” and for Guadagnino’s “Queer,” starring Daniel Craig.

While their Nin career is legendary, it’s almost hard to imagine a time when Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross weren’t scoring movies; their work is now so indelible. As rock musicians turned dedicated composers, they already earned themselves two Oscar awards for films as varied as David Fincher‘s “The Social Network” and Disney’s “Soul” (alongside Jon Batiste).

One of the most reliable partnerships in modern spooky cinema is that between director Scott Derrickson, and writer C. Robert Cargill. One of last year's biggest horror hits is officially getting a sequel. Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions have announced a release date for "The Black Phone 2," which is now due to arrive in summer 2025. Very few details have been revealed beyond the release date, but that's enough to confirm that a follow-up to director Scott Derrickson's adaptation of Joe Hill's short story of the same name is on the way. Mark your calendars for June 27, 2025.
Plot details have not been released as of yet. It's also unclear if Derrickson will return to the director's chair, or if a new filmmaker will be brought in to helm the sequel. It's also not specified whether writer C. Robert Cargill will return to pen the screenplay or not. Derrickson and Cargill are close collaborators, dating back to 2012's "Sinister," so if one comes along, it's likely both will. There's also the possibility...

The logline is being kept under wraps.
Although Skydance has been developing “Bermuda” for a while, the current version is still in its initial stages, and no writer is currently attached to it until the WGA strike ends. Webb will consult on the script, but it is not expected to take up co-writing duties.
David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger will produce for Skydance. Aimee Rivera will oversee the project for Skydance.
Coming off the hugely successful “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” Skydance’s live-action film slate includes “Heart of Stone,” “Spy Kids: Armageddon” and “The Old Guard 2” for Netflix as well as “The Family Plan,” “The Gorge,” and “Mayday” for Apple TV+ and “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.

Exclusive: Skydance’s long-in-development Bermuda Triangle action-adventure pic Bermuda has landed a director as Marc Webb has closed a deal to helm the project.
While the studio has been working on the project for some time, this version is still in early days with no writer has been attached; until the WGA strike ends, that won’t change. Insiders add that once the strike ends and a writer can be attached, Webb would consult on the script but is not expected to co-write.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, except for the fact that it will be set in the mysterious patch of the Caribbean where planes and ships have gone missing over the years.

Editor’s note: One in a series of stories marking the 100th day of the WGA strike.
As the WGA strike clocks 100 days, simply put — the motion picture studios had always been bracing for this.
Unlike the current SAG-AFTRA strike that forced the global shutdown of Hollywood movies including Gladiator 2 and Deadpool 3, the WGA strike, though largely considered to be a TV and streaming fight, has left its mark on the motion picture side — most predominantly on initially shaking up the theatrical-release schedule.
Franchise leader Disney was the first studio to overhaul its calendar with the move of 21 movies from 2025 through 2031. Chief among them was the delay of James Cameron’s long-in-the-works Avatar 3 pushing from Christmas 2024 to 2025, and several Marvel projects redated including Phase 6 finales Avengers: Kang Dynasty going from the start of May 2025 to 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars shifting from May 2026 to May 2027. Avatar 5 alone jumped three years,...

Bill Kinder, the subject of the Matthew McConaughey film “Dallas Sting” that was axed after an investigation uncovered allegations of misconduct, has denied the accusations, saying they were fabricated.
The Texan coach Kinder, 83, on Friday spoke with The Daily Mail and said that an anonymous letter was sent to the film’s studio, Skydance, accusing him of 40 years ago having “touched someone outside their clothes and referring to the female athletes he coached by inappropriate nicknames.” Kinder, in his interview with The Daily Mail, denied any misconduct and further said he was shocked at the news from earlier this week that the film will not move forward.
Kinder said he was contacted by investigators hired by Skydance after the letter was received and that he and the other subjects of the film, now all adult women, had informed him there was “nothing there” in terms of the investigations. He added...

Skydance has pulled the plug on a Matthew McConaughey film called “Dallas Sting” after an investigation into the film’s true story uncovered disturbing allegations, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The film from director Kari Skogland (Marvel’s “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) was meant to kick off production in six weeks and had nearly completed casting.
“Dallas Sting” is the true story of a high school girls soccer team that in 1984 went to China and managed to beat some of the best women’s teams in the world from China, Australia, Japan and finally Italy in a championship game. McConaughey would have played the team’s coach, Bill Kinder.

No one could have predicted that "Top Gun: Maverick," a sequel to a nearly 40-year-old movie, would wind up becoming not only the biggest movie of the summer, but the biggest movie of 2022 so far, pulling in 679 million domestic (more than "Avengers: Infinity War") and counting. It is a testament to the sheer power of spectacle director Joseph Kosinski and Tom Cruise manage to infuse into the movie, turning what could have easily been a cash grab, Americana-filled nostalgia play into a huge movie event the likes of which we haven't seen since before the pandemic.
