When the Sith Bandit jabs at a waterfall with her red lightsaber the sound effect is the same as when Darth Maul tested the electro ray barrier that separated him from Qui-Gon in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999).
The bits and pieces of Stormtrooper armor worn by the bandits are taken from both Imperial and First Order uniforms.
The character of the mysterious Ronin and his droid are elaborated upon in "Star Wars: Ronin: A Visions Novel" written by Emma Mieko Candon. In this alternate version of the Star Wars universe, Jedi clans swore fealty to rival feudal lords approximately two decades in the past. But one Jedi sect rejected their role as hired goons and sought to forge their own destiny as Sith. The Sith rebellion collapsed under infighting and betrayal, but some of the rival Sith Lords joined forces to create an empire. In the edge of the Outer Rim, a solitary ex-Sith patrols the borders, accompanied only by his faithful droid and a ghost from a less civilized age. The events of "The Duel" are recounted in the first two chapters of the novel.
The original Star Wars poster can be seen looming over the village plaza when the bandit leader and the ronin are dueling.
Emma Mieko Candon's novel "Ronin" clarifies that the young boy acts as village chief because his father, the actual chief, is sick in bed. This can be seen in "The Duel" but is not made clear in dialogue.
