The brand new trailer for Lone Scherfig’s follow-up to An Education has hit the internet thanks to the film’s official YouTube page. It is called One Day and from the looks of it centers on a male-female friendship with hints of turning into a romance. It stars two appealing actors, Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway, and from what I can gleam, it all centers around their relationship over the same day they met in the following years. The premise reminds me of a wonderful Italian film I saw at last year’s Chicago Film Festival called Ten Winters which follows a couple’s relationship every winter for ten years. I found that film to be a realistic look at first love and heartbreak. Hopefully this film can provide the same insight. The real question is whether this will be a Simon Howell movie or a Josh Youngerman movie.

Chicago – The 2010 Chicago International Film Festival kicked off it’s 46th year with a preview party last night at the Lucky Strike Lounge, next to the location where all the films will be shown, AMC River East 21 on Illinois Street. Founder and Artistic Director Michael Kutza introduced staff members who highlighted the various cinema categories offered by the festival, and then presented a roster of notable films to be shown.
Also premiering was the highly anticipated annual trailer of the Chicago International Film Festival, again narrated by the legendary vocal artist Ken Nordine. As the cinema landscape has changed, so has the trailers throughout the years and this one has a visual acuity and excitement that speaks to the modern filmgoer.

Until women reach a 50-50 parity with men directors, my mission continues to count the women directors in upcoming and recent film festivals (and an occasional informal glance at what’s selling in the markets). Women’s films in Berlin reflect women’s place in the world both in content and in the numbers of women represented as directors, producers, writers, etc. John Cooper of Sundance stresses the increasing and possibly 50-50 parity of women producers, but I am looking at the directors. As March is Women’s History Month (and all the other months are Men’s History Month according to Gloria Steinem’s L.A. Times Article of March 4, 2010) this blog is in honor of all women everywhere.

Rome -- Michael Moore's "Capitalism: A Love Story" will headline a 24-film competition lineup at September's Venice Film Festival, which is heavy on first and second films from up-and-coming directors.
The lineup includes five U.S. films, four each from Italy and France, four from Asia, two from the Middle East -- with all 23 films named Thursday as world premieres.
A 24th surprise competition pic to be announced during the fest would also be a world premiere, officials said. The fest will feature 71 world premieres.
"We are very pleased and very honored to announce this lineup," Venice artistic director Marco Mueller said in a briefing Thursday, where Fatih Akin's comedy "Soul Kitchen"; "Accident," a thriller from China's Cheang Pou; and "A Single Man," a drama from Tom Ford starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, were revealed as part of the lineup.
All told, the fest will feature 16 first works and nine second works.
