A really good episode with a semi-surprising ending.
Throughout the episode, we see the parallel between Butcher and Homelander, one with the hour-super serum, and the other with getting owned by everyone. And they both go nuts at the end when the straw breaks the camel's back.
I actually didn't notice this parallel until writing this review, I don't if you can call it that or not, but to me, they're both kinda paralleling each other.
First, we have Billy, which got the V24, and characteristically wants to destroy it, and struggles with the idea for a bit. First, he has a nightmare about it, as you do, then he goes to blackmail Gunpowder but it doesn't work out, and gets shot. He watches a Lego video his wife's son made with her mom's voice and calls Hughie to say that he was right and they should leave this line of work, but the opposite happens to Hughie and now he tells Butcher that they should get their hands dirty if they want to get things done and he changes Butcher's mind.
Which kinda feels repetitive? This "it's a new season and our heroes are separated and don't want to do what they did for x seasons, so we spend the first 2-3 episodes with them fighting and eventually reuniting again" thing that I thought they already did in season 2? But at least they're not dragging it, and I mean it's only 8 episodes, so they can't drag that trope that long anyway.
And Butcher, unsurprisingly, goes full psycho on Gunpowder and brutalizes him. (Although I was expecting his skull to be have been crushed beyond recognition).
On the other hand, we have Homelander, the birthday boy, which probably has the worst birthday a bratty attention seeker could have. This man can't have anything in this episode. Every attempt of his at bossing someone or assert dominance is shut down by everyone around him. (Let's not forget the whole cocaptain thing). And if that wasn't enough, Stormfront kills herself, and the straw that karate chopped the camel's back was the guy that mocked Stormfront being dead into Homelander's face.
And I say semi-surprising because it's not surprising that he would get fed up after all that and let it out like that for everyone. But it's still a little surprising that he would do that, considering that the most important thing he cares about is his public perception and that people should love him, and that's the whole point of Queen Maeve's blackmail, although it wasn't as bad him killing all those people in season 2.
We get a reveal about Nadia which is not surprising but it's a good reveal nonetheless.
Mother's Milk is struggling with choosing Butcher or his daughter and it seems like he had a past with Soldier Boy that might be related to his dad, which I'm glad they're doing, because it makes an actual connection between our protagonists and Soldier Boy and he's not just there to be there for no reason, it serves the plot and gives meaningful motivation to Marvin.
We get some stuff related to Kimiko and Frenchie too and they have a really bloody scene too with Andrea from Walking Dead which was nice. But I didn't care for the Kimiko stuff and her wanting to be a kid or something. They'll probably further that plot more in the next episodes, but for now, it's not that interesting to be honest. Didn't we get lots of backstory for her in last season?
Oh, and Hughie might have adopted a supe child.
All in all, this was a really good episode with some typical Boys' bodies exploding and blood rain scenes, Butcher and Homelander going nut, reveals about Neuman, Butcher taking the V, Soldier Boy working with Grace Mallory, Stormfront's death, and we're probably gonna see Homelander go even crazier since his fake public persona is wearing off. (Unless he gets even more popular in the eyes of public)
