Back in 2016, 3 years after Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity and 2 years after Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, the filmmaker Morten Tyldum released his own take on modern science fiction. Famous mostly for his Oscar-nominated historical drama The Imitation Game (2014), he gained success with it from the public, but was destroyed by critics.
Nevertheless, the movie’s brand-new synopsis promises a capturing story, as the plot revolves around two passengers forced to live alone on a giant spacecraft due to a malfunction in the ship’s defense system. They were supposed to wake up from their induced hibernation 90 years later, like thousands of people carried to a space colony.
However, it’s not the very end of the sci-fi’s premise. It turns out that one of the two passengers, Aurora, was secretly awakened by another one, Jim, for companionship, and she, not being aware of it, starts to mutually fall for him.

From winning the Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook, and achieving global fame for her appearance in The Hunger Games franchise, Jennifer Lawrence has created an envious career for herself. Winning an Oscar is one of the most significant achievements for anyone in the film industry. Actors dream of it and many directors make films with the prestigious award in mind. Like many things, however, the golden statue means the world to some and is insignificant to many. While some spend their entire lives looking forward to the day that they might win this trophy, many do win but do not hold much sentimentality to them.
Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting
Many actors have won the award but no longer have the trophy in their possession. Then there are those who simply lost it. It would seem that it is quite common for celebrities to not know the whereabouts of their Oscars after winning them. One would assume the reason for the misplacement to be simple, however, it would seem that the tales are probably as interesting as the...

Some seven further projects have been added to the initial opine announced at December’s Ventana Sur, including a pair from Paraguay, Málaga’s country of honour, and “Women in the City,” a doc feature exec produced by Rafael Cobos, creator, director and showrunner of the Canneseries-awarded show, “El hijo zurdo.”
Proving the possibility to carve out an international film career based out of Panama, “The Simple Life” (“La Vida Simple”) marks the sixth feature from Benaim, Oscar shortlisted for “Plaza Catedral.”
Marking a departure, “The Simple Life” looks like a more personal turn, about a film director, sans camera and crew, in Panama, compelled by unforeseen circumstances to live the very movie he’s longed to capture on film, suffering existential crisis.

Andre Braugher, the dynamic actor known for his outstanding work on such shows as Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has died. He was 61.
Braugher died Monday after a brief illness, his longtime rep Jennifer Allen told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death turned out to be lung cancer.
Braugher starred as master interrogator Det. Frank Pembleton on NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street for the first six seasons of the show’s acclaimed 1993-99 run, then played another cop, Capt. Raymond Holt — this time against type and for laughs — on the 2013-21 Fox-nbc sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
He won his first Emmy in 1998 for outstanding lead actor in a drama series for Homicide after a season that featured one of its most memorable episodes, “Subway.” That was a two-hander in which Pembleton tries to unearth whether a man (Vincent D’Onofrio) pinned between a Baltimore subway train...

If you were chilling in space, not knowing whether anyone was coming to save you, then I would suspect there was something wrong with you. How could there be not? Yet, director Kristian Mercado, with writer Angela Bourassa, has created the world of the film If You Were the Last, where suspension of disbelief is key to enjoying this romantic comedy. Space movies like Alien, Passengers, and many others have ominous undertones, probably because we don’t know what space holds for us and we fear what we don’t understand. Here in this movie, we are totally guaranteed that space is kind of a weird plaything where spaceships float and people can have cool lives living inside of them. Death is neither certain nor completely off the table, but it’s not much to fuss about. Living life to the fullest is what counts. The story of If You Were the Last...

Jennifer Lawrence is back in action, starring in a brand-new comedy after taking a break from Hollywood. Though she’s now a new mom, Lawrence is still a hot commodity. Fans love her as much as ever, and it’s clear that her signature sense of humor is still very much intact. Lawrence has been a working actor since childhood, appearing in TV shows and movies before getting her big break in a 2010 independent film. Ironically, that independent production might have been the one that shot Lawrence to stardom, but it remains one of her lowest-paid roles to date.

Jennifer Lawrence is hilarious. Sure, she made her name as an actor in dead-serious indie dramas (The Burning Plain, Winter’s Bone), franchise tent poles (The Hunger Games trilogy, those X-Men 2.0 blockbusters), the kind of nerve-shredding films that fall somewhere between horror and thriller (House at the End of the Street, Passengers), and whatever category you care to slot Mother! into. Filmmaker David O. Russell figured out early on that Lawrence was a perfect fit for his skewed, neurotic dramedies, and it’s impossible to think that Silver Linings Playbook and...

As we near the halfway point of the year, one of the great performances of 2023 thus far comes courtesy Charlotte Gainsbourg in Mikhaël Hers’ new drama The Passengers of the Night. Following a woman adrift in 1980s Paris, the drama is carefully attuned to the emotions of everyone that graces the screen. Reeling from a divorce while balancing job prospects and a relationship with her two teenage children as well as a new teenager that enters her life, Passengers exudes a mature poeticism in every scene. Ahead of a release at the end of the month starting at IFC Center, the new U.S. trailer has now arrived.
Here’s the official synopsis for the Berlinale and TIFF selection: “On election night in 1981, celebrations spill out onto the street and there is an air of hope and change throughout Paris. But for Elisabeth, her marriage is coming to an end,...

Plot: Silo is the story of the last ten thousand people on earth, their mile-deep home protecting them from the toxic and deadly world outside. However, no one knows when or why the silo was built and any who try to find out face fatal consequences. Ferguson stars as Juliette, an engineer, who seeks answers about a loved one’s murder and tumbles onto a mystery that goes far deeper than she could have ever imagined, leading her to discover that if the lies don’t kill you, the truth will.
Review: Post-apocalyptics stories are bordering on burnout. After decades of zombies and plagues and reaching for creative twists on the genre, we are getting to the point of animal-human hybrids (Sweet Tooth), blind tribes (See), and even deadly fungus spores (The Last of Us). While the creativity in those aforementioned series is impressive, the genre seems to be petering out.

Nothing's a surefire bet in Hollywood until it is. Few took "Star Wars" seriously until it forever changed the movie landscape in 1977, ushering in our modern blockbuster era. Many were just as skeptical of the very concept of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, right up until "The Avengers" became the highest-grossing non-James Cameron movie ever at the time of its release in 2012. But when it did, you can bet your bottom dollar studios did everything in their power to replicate that success as quickly as possible -- and you can be just as well-assured that the outcome was often more regrettable than not.

At CinemaCon 2023, Sony revealed another look at “No Hard Feelings,” the Gene Stupnitsky-directed romp starring Jennifer Lawrence as a down-on-her-luck Uber driver who takes a gig to “date” a socially awkward high schooler to bring the 19-year-old out of his shell before college. It’s an old-school, R-rated star+concept comedy, something that was in short supply even before Covid sent many such titles to streaming platforms.
The footage features the initial meeting between Lawrence and Andrew Barth Feldman. It’s the full sequence heavily featured in the first trailer, whereby Lawrence attempts to “pick up” the kid at the animal shelter where he volunteers. There’s a dog at the shelter who is apparently addicted to cocaine and who barks furiously when the word “cocaine” is uttered.

The career of one Ke Huy Quan may just be one of Hollywood's most stirring comeback stories. After gaining recognition as a child actor in "The Goonies" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," Quan struggled to find further roles as he grew older and eventually all but disappeared from movies as a performer. That is until he made his incredibly lauded return in "Everything Everywhere All at Once," kicking off the let the Ke Huy Quan-Naissance and winning him an Academy Award -- not to mention the hearts of all rooting for his much-deserved success. Quan never quit the industry entirely, however, and his work as a stunt choreographer and assistant director in his interim years proves his technical expertise in the world of cinema.
After "The Goonies" released in 1985, Quan appeared in a variety of international productions like the Japanese bike racing drama "Passengers" in 1987, the American...

“’Gears of War’ is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates,” Spaihts said in a statement to Variety. “It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”

If Wes Anderson and Nancy Meyers joined forces to remake the 2016 sci-fi drama Passengers, the result would be something like If You Were the Last, a vivid but overly cute feature debut from director Kristian Mercado that premiered at SXSW.
Anthony Mackie and Zoë Chao star as a pair of astronauts stranded aboard a NASA shuttle that gets lost in space, and their decent onscreen chemistry helps fuel a rom-com tackling questions of fidelity, friendship and, well, fornication, as the would-be couple endlessly drifts through the cosmos. Backed by a colorful DIY aesthetic that makes the most of its budget, the film is nonetheless sappy and, in terms of its comedy, rather cringe-worthy, never quite finding the sweet spot between romance and laughs.

The ending to "The Mist" still hurts. After being trapped in an all-encompassing fog filled with giant Lovecraftian monsters, David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and the other survivors finally give up hope. David uses his gun's remaining bullets to kill his son and the other survivors. He steps out of his car to accept his demise, only for the mist to suddenly disperse. Turns out, the military's gotten the situation under control, and if David had waited 30 seconds, they all would've been perfectly safe. It seems that nearly every decision David's made has brought him further into the mist, making his situation worse than it needed to be.
If you're having trouble understanding how much this realization stung for poor David, imagine you're at a grocery store and there are only two checkout counters available. One of the lines to the checkout counters seems way shorter than the other, so you pick that one,...

Two different types of viewers tuned in to check out The Ark on Syfy last week: those looking for a fun sci-fi adventure and those seeking a cutting edge space epic. While the pilot certainly met the needs of those expecting an enjoyable romp, others may have found any true depth lacking in the premiere, even though judging by a single episode might be considered unfair.
The Ark showrunners Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner admit they were going for familiarity over anything cutting edge. “There was a real desire to make a really comfortable old shoe but to put a new spin on it … bucking the trend lately of these incredibly dark and edgy shows that often are unique for unique’s sake, as opposed to storytelling’s sake,” says Devlin.
Glassner agrees that darker isn’t always better. “[The Ark is] kind of what I wanted to see on...

"Everybody that was in charge of running this ship is dead… It all falls to us now." Syfy has revealed an official trailer for a sci-fi series debuting in February called The Ark, created for the sci-fi network. It's co-created by Jonathan Glassner, and Dean Devlin, best known as the writer of the screenplays for Stargate, Independence Day, Godzilla, and Geostorm. Set 100 years in the future when Earth is sending out its first interplanetary colonization ships. The story follows the remaining crew of a spacecraft known as Ark One, who must become the best versions of themselves to stay on course & survive after a catastrophic event that causes massive destruction and loss of life on the ship. This sounds similar to other sci-fi with this premise like the two films Passengers and Aniara. It stars Christie Burke, Richard Fleeshman, Reece Ritchie, Stacey Read, and Ryan Adams. It has that very cheap Syfy look & feel,...

“Interstellar” was a groundbreaking sci-fi movie that took audiences to new heights. If you love space exploration and mind-bending movies with visual effects, then you’ll love these 8 movies like “Interstellar.”
“Interstellar” is a Nolan creation that includes an all-star ensemble cast including Matthew McConaughey, Michael Caine, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, and Matt Damon. This is a true sensory delight of a movie made with deep scientific theories and intense human emotions at play.
The Oscar award-winning movie (for Best Achievement in Visual Effects) was an absolute box office smash it grossing well over 700 million worldwide.
Yes, it is hard to come across other sci-fi films that are just as captivating. Nevertheless, it would be inaccurate to say that there haven’t been any other movies seeking to achieve similar goals. We’re sure that “Interstellar” fans will approve of our suggestions.

It's been six years since "Passengers" made its theatrical debut and the world has yet to recover.
When word of Morten Tyldum's sci-fi spectacle first arrived, the anticipation was immediate. A romantic space adventure with Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt? It was almost too good to be true. These are two performers who built their careers on charisma, so tossing them together guaranteed a good time ... right? (You have to remember that this was years before Chris Pratt would be deemed a war criminal for his hostile takeover of Mario's voice.)
Unfortunately, "Passengers" was a massive letdown. So much so that Jennifer Lawrence regrets it to this day and fondly recalls the fact that her Grammy-award-winning friend, Adele once warned her against it.
Where Did Passengers Go Wrong?

Morten Tyldum, the Norwegian director of The Imitation Game, Headhunters and Passengers, has signed on to direct Ibelin, based on the true-story of Norwegian gamer Mats Steen.
Steen, who suffered from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, died in 2014 at the age of 25. On the day of his funeral, held in a chapel in Oslo, people from all over Europe showed up to pay tribute to Mats, who they knew by his World of Warcraft handle Ibelin, giving heartfelt speeches about how he had enriched and changed their lives. On the surface, Mats Steen lived an isolated and lonely life alone with his parents. Online, he helped create and support a global community that transcended age, geography and time.
“Ever since hearing about Mats and meeting his family, this is a story I felt needed to be shared with the world,” Tyldum said in a statement.

Jeff Bridges has admitted to initially finding his experience making Iron Man “very frustrating”.

Bridges, who can currently be seen in TV series The Old Man, reflected on the Jon Favreau-directed film in a new interview with The Independent.

Michael Parkinson has shared his opinion on the interviews from his old talk show.
The broadcaster, who is 87, was invited on to BBC Breakfast on Thursday (4 November) where he talked about his new book, which was written by his son.
During the interview, Parkinson was asked about his talk show, which he presented from the years 1971 to 1982, and then again from 1998 to 2007.
Parkinson, who is widely considered to be one of the best talk show hosts of all time, was asked by Naga Munchetty: “Do you get sick of seeing the TV clips?”
He replied: “Do I get sick of it? Absolutely. I don’t recognise the person.”
Elaborating, he replied: “It’s a disguise, this is a disguise. All of it. You’re not yourself at all. It changes you. No matter how considerate you might be of the problems of being famous, it changes you, and it’s bound to.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, as “Causeway” debuts on Apple TV+, we reassess Best Actress.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! The calendar has hit November and the general public is flush with awards contenders. Out in wider release today is James Gray’s “Armageddon Time,” which is maybe a crowd anti-pleaser — although that’s part of the reason why I think it’s such a great movie. Last weekend, “TÁR” and “Till” hit more than 1,000 screens nationwide, and even “Triangle of Sadness” moved out of the ostensible arthouse. In short, it’s a great time to see a movie at the theater, which is why I’d love to lead off here with one everyone can watch at home right now so long as they subscribe to Apple TV+: “Causeway.

Millie Bobby Brown appears to have changed her tune regarding a Stranger Things complaint.
Brown, who plays Eleven on the series, candidly called out its creators, the Duffer brothers, for failing to kill off many characters.
The actor, 18, said of the show earlier this year: “It’s way too big. Last night, we couldn’t even take one group picture because there was like 50 of us. I was like, ‘You need to start killing people off.’”
She went on: “The Duffer brothers are two sensitive Sallies that don’t want to kill anyone off. We need to be Game of Thrones. We need to have the mindset of Game of Thrones.”
However, in a new interview, Brown, who said it was “ridiculous” that the writers brought back David Harbour’s character Hopper, has now said that it “sucks” when her co-stars’ characters are killed off.
“Yeah, it sucks sometimes,” she told Et.

ReigningI’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here champ, Emmerdale actor Danny Miller, has shared his verdict on Matt Hancock’s participation in the new series.

His participation was inadvertently confirmed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, whose official spokesperson condemnned Hancock’s decision to join the reality show.
Miller appeared on Good Morning Britain on Friday (4 November), where he was asked for his views on Hancock’s controversial decision to sign up to the show.

Billy McFarland has admitted that he was “wrong” to go ahead with Fyre Festival in his first interview since being released from prison.
McFarland was at the centre of a high-profile scandal in which ticketholders were lured to a “luxury music festival” held on Pablo Escobar’s former private island in the Bahamas, with Blink-182, Migos and Disclosure booked to perform.
However, the event was a notorious disaster, collapsing in chaos after issues with food, security and accommodation arose. It was the subject of two documentaries that aired on Hulu and Netflix in 2019.
In 2018, McFarland – a repeated scammer – pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud. He was sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to pay back 26m (£23m) to investors, but was released early in March 2022.
On Friday (4 November), McFarland made his return to our screens as he sat down with Good Morning America for his first TV appearance following his release.

“Visiting his grave to say goodbye formally and ask his blessing was really great to help deal with it because it was such a surprise – none of us knew that he was sick and we were only weeks...

“What are your biggest regrets?” This might be one of the more obvious questions a journalist can ask an actor, but the answer can often be hugely revealing.
Many actors have spoken negatively about their time spent as a superhero, playing a teenage heartthrob or starring in films they believed had been written by somebody else.
Others, including Charlize Theron, have said they took a job solely due to a director’s filmography – only to then be let down by the final results of their collaboration.
Most recently, Jennifer Lawrence revealed that she did not look so favourably upon 2016 science fiction film Passengers.
Below, The Independent looks at 27 actors who have admitted to disliking films they have starred in.
George Clooney – Batman & Robin (1997)

A new version of the David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and The Lightning Seed’s iconic “Three Lions” football anthem will be released.
Last month, The Lightning Seeds singer Ian Broudie revealed that they were in talks about releasing a new version of the song ahead of the World Cup in Qatar this year.
Given the time of year, Broudie said the song could have a Christmas spin on it and that it would also have lyrics changed to acknowledge the Lionesses’ triumphant win at the Euros this year.
“Three Lions” was originally released by comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner and the rock band The Lightning Seeds in 1996 for the Euros. It was then recorded again for the 1998 World Cup.
Now, Baddiel has confirmed that the updated song will be released and that they filmed the video recently – and the song will definitely be “Christmassy”.

Britney Spears has issued an apology to former child actor Alexa Nikolas after it was alleged that the star “yelled” at Nikolas on the set of Zoey 101.
Nikolas played Nicole Bristow in the first two seasons of the Nickelodeon series, alongside Spears’ younger sister Jamie Lynn Spears.
After the conclusion of season two in 2006, Nikolas left the programme after reports of several fights and disagreements with series star Jamie Lynn. It had previously emerged that Britney had, on one occasion, shouted at Nikolas on set on Jamie Lynn’s behalf.
Since then, Nikolas has been vocal about surviving mistreatment in the industry and founded a movement called Eat Predators, which seeks to call out alleged predators and networks.
In late October, Nikolas spoke about her experiences on the show on multiple podcasts, claiming that she was bullied on the set of Zoey 101 after lies were spread about her.

Copyright claims against Mariah Carey for her hit song “All I Want For Christmas is You” have been dropped.
Carey and co-songwriter Walter Afansieff were originally sued in June this year after they were accused of copying the song from country singer Andy Stone.
Stone claimed he co-wrote a song of the same name five years earlier for his band Vince Vance & the Valiants in 1989.
While the song is sonically different, Stone claims he never gave permission for the name to be used.
Carey was originally being sued for 20m (£16m), according to legal documents filed at the US district court in the eastern district of Louisiana.
However, the case has now been dropped by Stone – but he is legally allowed to refile.
In the original case file, it was claimed that Carey had earned “undeserved” profit from the song title.

Megan Thee Stallion has hit out at Drake after he appeared to claim that she was lying about being shot by Tory Lanez.
In June 2020, the “Wap” rapper was shot in both feet after a party at Kylie Jenner’s house, with Megan alleging that the shooter was fellow rapper Lanez.
Lanez was charged with felony assault and, in November 2021, entered a “not guilty” plea.
The trial has been pushed back a number of times, but is scheduled to begin later this month on 28 November.
On Friday (4 November), Drake and 21 Savage released their collaborative album Her Loss, featuring the track “Circo Loco”.
On it, Drake raps seemingly in reference to Megan: “This b**** lie ’bout getting shots but she still a stallion/ She don’t even get the joke but she still smiling.”
In the early hours of Friday (4 November) morning, Megan tweeted calling on her fellow musicians to...
