There’s often been unfair snobbery about the films of Merchant Ivory, the production banner founded in 1961 by producer Ismail Merchant and director James Ivory, which gives Stephen Soucy’s entertaining documentary study its title. The British costume drama was widely considered a wheezing genre — fusty, middlebrow and too calcified in its literary sources to acquire much cinematic vitality — when A Room with a View came along in 1986 and became a global art-house crossover hit. At their best, notably in Howards End and Remains of the Day, Merchant Ivory’s films stand the test of time as influential works that removed the starch from the stodgy period piece.
Contemporaries reductively dismissed their output as “Laura Ashley filmmaking,” referencing the design firm known for its pretty Romantic Victorian inspirations. But Merchant Ivory did more than anyone from the mid-1980s to the early ‘90s to popularize and legitimize the thematically and emotionally rich costume drama.

The opening track on "Tender," Zzzahara's sophomore solo album, feels like the doo-wop-influenced surf pop of the '50s and '60s. Then two minutes in, "Dust" delivers the album's first big moment, a serrated guitar solo that rips through the song's old-old-days motif and harkens to the lick that powers the grabby 1974 Wings hit "Let Me Roll It."
It's unexpected, but it's not surprising for fans of the Angeleno's first effort, 2022's "Liminal Spaces." They've again pulled distinct threads from disparate brands of rock and pop from across generations and laced them together for a sparkly, rough-edged, varied collection.
"I would describe the sound of Zzzahara as big and melodic," the singer, guitarist, and songwriter told Sound of Life in February. "I think the sound sort of morphed naturally into a more mature sound with lots of thought behind it. Honestly, it's like a medley of different rock genres.

China’s remarkable box office recovery this year took a pause on a weekend with no new releases and the quietest attendance levels since January.
Next week’s crop of blockbuster holiday releases will show if the latest weekend was aberration attributable to timing.
Data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway showed nationwide box office worth just $25 million – from a population of 1.3 billion people and some 100,000 commercial cinema screens. The figure was the second lowest of 2023 and only fractionally higher than the second week of January, which was a time when China’s post-covid recovery was only just gearing up and major film releases were targeting the late-January Chinese New Year festivities.
Since that time, China’s box office has mostly been on a roll. The Chinese New Year period was worth $1 billion to cinemas. Hollywood films have been allowed to return in quantity. And the summer season was buoyed by...

Fall Out Boy hit the stage during the MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday night to perform their updated version of Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire.”
The rock group released the song earlier this summer, writing new lyrics for Joel’s iconic hit song, which included references to significant events that happened from the years 1949 to 1989, including everything from the Cold War to the cola wars and Joseph Stalin to John F. Kennedy.
Fall Out Boy’s version covers the years from 1989 to 2023 and references Iron Man, MIchael Phelps, Taylor Swift, Colin Kaepernick, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, MySpace and the deaths of George Floyd, Prince and Queen Elizabeth, among other topics.
Bebe Rexha introduced the band at the VMAs, which are airing live from New Jersey’s Prudential Center. During the show, Fall Out Boy — decked out in suits — performed outside the arena on a stage filled with flames.

If you enjoyed Spoon’s 2022 record Lucifer on the Sofa, get ready for more music you’ll probably love. Come June 13th, the band will release Memory Dust, an EP comprised of songs they first wrote during the LP’s recording sessions. As a preview, the track “Sugar Babies” is out now.
Featuring the original songs “Sugar Babies” and “Silver Girl,” as well as a cover of Bo Diddley’s “She’s Fine, She’s Mine,” Spoon are quick to stress that Memory Dust isn’t a collection of B-sides. The indie veterans began recording the tracks while cutting Lucifer on the Sofa, but left them unfinished until after touring the album. As a result, the songs are more lived in, maintaining the project’s classic rock feel but with a looseness that only comes after spending months on the road. Pre-orders are ongoing.

This article contains spoilers for the first two episodes of Silo.
The Apple TV+ series Silo is set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has been forced into an underground silo because the outside world has become toxic.
The silo’s inhabitants don’t know how the world became toxic or who built the silo that became their salvation, nor are they allowed to ask questions about it. People are permitted to explore the outside if they demand it, but there are no take-backs once the request has been made. The sensors that show the barren wasteland on the other side of the airlock do a pretty good job of deterring even the more curious citizens of the silo, but there are still those who question whether what they see outside is reality.

Following the news of their forthcoming mini album Fml receiving over 4M pre-orders, K-pop stage-breakers Seventeen unveiled a trailer for the mini album ahead of its arrival at 5 Am Et/6 Pm Kst on April 24. Reminiscent of a trailer for a feature film, the video opens as the voice-over narration asks, “How do you define the world that surrounds you?”
The short clip captures members of Seventeen at the center of disorder, placed in the midst of broken cars, messy rooms, dull offices, packed buses, and groups of menacing chasers. Rather than being set back by distress, however, the members soon start to get on their feet and take off, as the narration in the background suggests to them, “Fight for your life.”
The K-pop supergroup also dropped a series of concept photos this week, while the tracklist released earlier this month revealed that there will be 6 tracks to the mini album.

Two months before she reunites with Tom Cruise for another daring spy adventure, Rebecca Ferguson is leading a thriller of her own. The “Mission: Impossible” and “Dune” actor stars in the new trailer for “Silo,” a sci-fi drama series, released by Apple TV+ on Thursday.
The show is based on a series of science fiction novels by author Hugh Howey, which includes three books: “Wool,” “Shift,” and “Dust.” “Silo” is set in a dystopian future where all of humanity lives in the titular enclave, a subterranean city of mysterious origins. Contains spoilers for "The Last of Us" Season 1
Season 1 of HBO's "The Last of Us" is now behind us. While it was a tad shaky at times and notably lacking action, most will likely agree that showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann produced a worthy adaptation of the popular 2013 video game from Naughty Dog and Sony Interactive Entertainment. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey delivered strong performances as fungi outbreak survivors Joel and Ellie on a quest to save humanity. She is immune to the infection, and Joel must transport her to a group known as the Fireflies so scientists can study her blood and hopefully discover a cure.
Throughout their journey, Joel and Ellie met good and evil characters and engaged in adventures that impacted their relationship, building to a shocking climax that left viewers reeling and eager to see what happens in Season 2.

Apple TV+ has assembled a star-studded cast for its new post-apocalyptic sci-fi series, "Silo," based on the bestselling book series of the same name by Hugh Howey. Set to premiere this May, "Silo" has now released its first trailer, where you can see heavyweight talents like Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Robbins, rapper Common ("John Wick: Chapter 2"), Rashida Jones ("Parks and Recreation"), and David Oyelowo.
Back in 2021 when "Silo" was still finding its cast, the series — which hails from "Justified" showrunner Graham Yost and Oscar-nominated director Morten Tyldum ("The Imitation Game") — was going by a different title, "Wool." That's the name of Howey's first book, collecting his first short story, "Wool," and four follow-up novellas. Howey has since written two more novels, "Shift" and "Dust," and is currently working on an unnamed fourth.

Author Hugh Howey began his Silo series of post-apocalyptic science fiction stories in 2011, and attempts to bring those stories to the screen have been coming and going since 2012. Ridley Scott and Steve Zaillian were going to produce a film adaptation for 20th Century Fox. Latoya Morgan was developing a Silo series for AMC. But a decade down the line, it’s Apple TV+ that has successfully managed to get a Silo series into production. The first two episodes of the series will premiere on May 5th, with the remaining episodes to be released on a weekly basis every Friday. A teaser trailer for Silo has now arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.
According to TV Line, Silo follows the last 10,000 people on Earth as they navigate life in their mile-deep underground home protecting them from the toxic outside world. The catch? No one knows...

The late Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan was close friends with Kurt Cobain during the latter’s lifetime. Cobain performed on Lanegan’s debut solo album, and anecdotes from Lanegan’s memoir illustrated just how tight the two grunge artists were.
It turns out their collaborative efforts apparently went both ways. In the new biographical oral history, Lanegan, the singer’s former Queens of the Stone Age bandmate Nick Oliveri revealed that Mark helped write lyrics for Nirvana’s stark masterpiece “Something in the Way,” but went uncredited. Therefore Lanegan — who often struggled to make ends meet while coping with drug addiction — didn’t receive what would have been massive royalties for the sales of Nirvana’s mega-selling album Nevermind.
“Mark said he wrote some lyrics on ‘Something in the Way’ with Kurt on Nevermind,” Oliveri told author Greg Prato. “But Kurt had played on some of Mark’s solo stuff,...

Before he started working on the song, “Dust and Ash,” for the documentary, “The Voice of Dust and Ash,” J. Ralph had never heard of Iranian musician Mohammad Reza Shajarian. He first heard about him from a very notable source. “It was actually Sting’s daughter, Fuschia Sumner, that turned me on to the project. She’s one of the producers and she said, ‘I gotta show you this trailer. I think you’d be really great to get on board,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent interview (watch the exclusive video interview above).
The experience of hearing Shajarian for the first time was nothing short of an eye-opener for him. “It’s this incredible revelation when you get to experience something of this magnitude. His heart and his humility and his talent is something that you very rarely get to see.”

Walt Disney World on Monday unveiled a new set of annual passes for Florida residents with similar price points to Disneyland’s pass program unveiled last month, as the parent company continues to retool its parks division. The business was one of entertainment’s hardest hit by Covid but has proven resilient since reopening amid strong pent-up demand.
Both U.S. parks are still suffering from a lack of foreign tourists, so the company’s designing packages to lure locals.
Walt Disney World will offer four separate annual passes starting on September 8 ahead of the park’s 50th anniversary festivities, which it’s calling The World’s Most Magical Celebration, according to the Disney parks blog.
The Disney Pixie Dust Pass, Disney Pirate Pass, Disney Sorcerer Pass and Disney Incredi-Pass go for, respectively, $399, $699, $899 and $1,299 (plus tax) for 12 months. The Sorcerer Pass is also available to Disney Vacation Club Members.

“We’re gonna have a good time in here tonight,” Gibbons told the audience following the opener “Got Me Under Pressure.” “Got a new guy up here, as you know. Dusty gave me the directive.
