Prior to his seven-year stint on "Star Trek: Voyager," Robert Picardo had a lengthy and storied acting career. He was a Joe Dante regular, appearing in "The Howling," "The Explorers," "Innerspace," "The 'Burbs," "Matinee," and "Gremlins 2: The New Batch." He appeared in "Star 80," Ridley Scott's "Legend," the zombie cop film "Dead Heat," and Robert Englund's directorial debut "976-evil." This was all mixed in with plentiful TV work and multiple appearances on stage. Picardo has never been not busy, most recently appearing on a 2024 episode of "Young Sheldon."
Had Picardo never taken the "Star Trek" gig, he still would not have been hurting for work. "Voyager" just happened to be a sizable feather in his cap. "Voyager" simply boosted the actor's visibility and gained him legions of Trekkie fans. On "Voyager," Picardo played the U.S.S. Voyager's nameless Doctor, an Emergency Medical Hologram that had to...

Jack Lemmon was the two-time Oscar-winner who starred in dozens of films, working until his death in 2001 at the age of 76. But how many of those titles are classics? Let’s take a look back at 25 of his greatest movies, ranked worst to best.
Lemmon won his first Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for “Mister Roberts” (1955). A second Oscar for Best Actor followed for “Save the Tiger” (1973), making him the first person to pull off victories in both categories. He competed six more times for Best Actor throughout his career.
He is perhaps best known for his long collaboration with Walter Matthau, with whom he made 11 films. In films such as “The Fortune Cookie” (1966), “The Odd Couple” (1968), and “Grumpy Old Men” (1993), Lemmon’s fastidiousness played beautifully off of Matthau’s scruffiness.
On the small screen, Lemmon earned Emmys for “‘S Wonderful, ‘S Marvelous, ‘S Gershwin” (Best Variety Performer in 1972) and...

New York, June 1 (Ians) A 17-year-old Indian-origin student in Missouri has won the prestigious Regeneron Young Scientist Awards of $50,000 for his research relating to the mpox virus.
Saathvik Kannan of David H. Hickman High School in Columbia was awarded for using biocomputational methods to understand the causes of heightened infectivity in the disease mpox after it re-emerged in 2022.
Saathvik’s approach, named Bioplex, uses a combination of machine learning and three-dimensional comparative protein modeling to decode structures like those that enable the mpox virus to replicate.
This allowed him to identify the mutations in the virus that likely made it more infectious as well as other mutations that could make it resistant to antibiotics.
He credited his mentor, Kamlendra Singh, an assistant professor of veterinary pathobiology at the University of Missouri.
“I was overjoyed and incredibly excited!” Saathvik wrote in an email to the Columbia Daily Tribute about the prize.

It’s been a tough time in Hollywood and beyond as the Writers Guild strike shut down production of just about every kind of entertainment — and lots of parties and events, too. Canceled/postponed celebrations included the MTV Movie & TV Awards, the 49th AFI Lifetime Achievement Award: A Tribute to Nicole Kidman, the Critics Choice Inaugural Celebration of LGBTQ+ Cinema & Television and many others.
But music festivals like the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival marked the early beginning of summer fest season and Netflix helped launch Pride Month early with a huge “All Out” celebration in West Hollywood. Meanwhile, “The Little Mermaid” swam into Hollywood for a lavish premiere and SeriesFest: Chapter 9 took over Denver. So all is not lost in the world of Parties & Premieres, but we sure hope that Hollywood writers get the raises they deserve and go back to work very soon.

George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, and James Cameron were other directors he would’ve been fine collaborating with without pay.
“I want to find out what happen, my action and their technology,” Chan once told The New York Times.
Chan would finally get the opportunity to meet the Oscar-winning filmmaker for a project Spielberg had in mind.

Longtime Variety reporter Dave McNary was remembered as a consummate journalist who deeply loved covering the movie business during American Cinematheque’s Tribute to the Crafts, held Monday night at Santa Monica’s Aero Theatre.
Sharon McNary, a longtime journalist for Kpcc-fm who was married to Dave McNary for 21 years, was on hand to accept a posthumous award for her husband, presented by Variety co-editor in chief Cynthia Littleton. Dave McNary died in 2020 at the age of 69 after suffering a stroke.
“I never saw anyone work as hard as he did,” Sharon McNary told the crowd.
She noted that her husband loved this time of year, when film kudos are in full swing. “He called it tuxedo season,” she said. Unlike many industry veterans, Dave never complained about having to dress up for events. “He’d get dressed up, take a picture with the dog and head off to have the time of his life,...

Sensing a potential trend in the possible nominations of three major Oscars categories — best director, actor and actress — we could see a first-time occurrence for the Academy Awards on Tuesday. However, if you read the tea leaves put forth by the nominations for the DGA and SAG, there’s a strong possibility that all three of those categories may not include a first-time nominee — a first in Oscar history.
For best actor, the SAG lineup recognized all former nominees and winners — Javier Bardem (“Being the Ricardos”), Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”), Andrew Garfield, Will Smith (“King Richard”) and Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”). Even the ones on the bubble are once-nominated or crowned, including Mahershala Ali (“Swan Song”), Bradley Cooper (“Nightmare Alley”) and Leonardo DiCaprio (“Don’t Look Up”). The closest first-timers in the running seem to be Golden Globe nominees Peter Dinklage (“Cyrano”) and Cooper Hoffman (“Licorice Pizza...

Can you pour so much authentic love, tenderness, and warmth into a tribute with your heart in the right place and still get it all wrong? And to that end of questions, is it possible to apply the “wrong” genre to a beloved genre franchise? Well, for the former, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” certainly makes the case for a cautionary tale about overwrought affections. Because the new film by director Jason Reitman—the son of Ivan Reitman, the director of the original 1984 comedy— is undoubtedly a well-meaning love letter to “Ghostbusters,” and the late Harold Ramis, in particular, but its well-intentioned embrace is too reverent and eventually turns mawkish, even awkward and embarrassing in the final act.

Photo: ‘Gunpowder Milkshake’/Netflix Heightened Expectations Everyone’s favorite streaming service, Netflix, has released this high-intensity, female-led action film, ‘Gunpowder Milkshake’ today and it has already received a lot of traction. So far the critics are loving this, as it has received eighty-five percent on Google, and sixty-seven percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Many people seemed to really enjoy it, and that’s fantastic. The title, ‘Gunpowder Milkshake’ was a bit confusing to me, as I was not sure what to make of it. After watching the film, it all becomes clear now. It’s a little bit of violence, and a little bit of sweet/childish. That is a perfect description of the film’s entirety. “You’re No Good” (Bob Dylan, 1962)
From his oft-overlooked folkie debut, a prophetic blast of rockabilly. Even in this early stage, hustling to make his name in the folk scene, Dylan’s got rock & roll in his bones.
“Going, Going, Gone” (Planet Waves, 1974)
One of his last great studio performances with the Band — and also one of his catchiest songs about death.
“Black Diamond Bay” (Desire, 1976)
A tale of forbidden love, violence, treachery — plus a final-verse twist where it turns out Dylan’s at home watching the news on TV,...

Gallipoli director Peter Weir and star Mel Gibson will be honoured this week at the 2021 Australian International Screen Forum via the event’s Trailblazer Awards.
The award will recognise their contribution to a body of work that transformed the Australian industry and led to Australian films breaking into international markets.
Screen Forum chairman Chis Beale said: “The Awards are given to Australians who have blazed a trail for Australian film and television; and that doesn’t merely include their own success, but also laying the foundation for others to follow – Peter and Mel fit that category”
Gallipoli, directed by Peter Weir and starring Mel Gibson, was released in 1981 and was a breakthrough film in Australia and internationally, nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Film and winning eight AFIs.

ABC aired “Black Panther” on Sunday to pay tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, and the film delivered a substantial audience for the Disney-owned network.
After three days of delayed viewing, a total of 6.5 million viewers tuned in to see Boseman bring T’Challa to life. That represents the strongest performance for a feature film on broadcast television since the linear debut of “Frozen” back in 2016. In terms of the key 18-49 demographic, the film grew to a 1.5 rating, meaning its finished joint top of the table for the week of Aug. 24 with CBS’s “Big Brother.” According to sources, those “Black Panther” numbers also represent ABC’s best for Sunday nights this summer. In fact, the network hasn’t seen those numbers on a summer Sunday night since June 2018 (excluding sports).
The network’s Chadwick Boseman tribute special grew to 5.2 million viewers in Live+3.

Jack Lemmon would’ve celebrated his 94th birthday on February 8, 2019. The two-time Oscar-winner starred in dozens of films, working until his death in 2001 at the age of 76. But how many of those titles are classics? In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 25 of his greatest movies, ranked worst to best.
SEEOscar Best Supporting Actor Gallery: Every Winner in Academy Award History

On top of that, Los Cabos 2018 will have as international guests the living legends Terry Gilliam - who’s attending the Latin American premiere of his once cursed project The Man Who Killed Don Quixote - and Spike Lee, whose relevant latest joint BlacKkKlansman is set to close the fest....

Before walking the red carpet Sept. 11 for the world premiere of her third feature, the Sasheer Zamata-starring pic “The Weekend,” pictured above, Toronto-born writer-director Stella Meghie was feted with five other Canadian cinema artists at the sixth annual Birks Diamond Tribute to the Year’s Women in Film, co-presented with partner Telefilm Canada at a splashy private event Sept. 10.
Meghie, whose debut comedy “Jean of the Jones” screened here in 2016, and Quebec director Jeanne Leblanc, now at work on her second feature, “Les notres,” are honored in the Emerging Talent category, which was added this year.
Now based in L.A., Meghie, who is also an ambassador for Tiff’s Share Her Journey initiative, welcomes these kind of opportunities. “For the most part I try to stay focused on the work,” she told Variety, “But I’m happy to lend my voice and talk about the state of where...

George C. Scott, “Patton” (1970) — Scott took home the Best Actor prize for “Patton,” which also won Best Picture. In the film he plays the titular George S. Have you ever felt like you're falling forever in your dreams? Special effects master Steve Wang (who worked on A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child) looks to replicate that unsettling feeling with his new (aptly titled "Infinity Hell" 1:3 scale Freddy Krueger maquette from Elite Creature Collectibles.
Standing 30 inches tall (so it can tower over your sleeping head on your nightstand), the "Infinity Hell" Freddy Krueger maquette features impeccable details, both in its depiction of Robert Englund's iconic character and the seemingly bottomless base that looks like a doorway to your deepest, darkest nightmares.
The "Infinity Hell" Freddy Krueger maquette is limited to only 499 worldwide, so if you want to add this work of art to your collection, read on for official details and visit Cinemaquette's official website.
Freddy Krueger 1:3 Scale Maquette: "Sleep, by design, is meant to refresh and renew us. It gives us a necessary break from reality.

In this edition of Canon Of Film, we take a look at Bob Clark‘s holiday classic, ‘A Christmas Story‘. For the story behind the genesis of the Canon, you can click here.
‘A Christmas Story’ (1983)
Director: Bob Clark
Screenplay: Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown & Bob Clark based on the novel ‘In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash,’ by Jean Shepherd
I know there’s a lot of people out there who regret the commercialization of ‘A Christmas Story‘ and sure, it’s totally out-of-hand. There’s a live televised version of ‘A Christmas Story‘ that happened on TV recently, which is one of the more benign examples to occur. I’d be remissed if I didn’t bring up the egregious straight-to-dvd sequel they made a couple years ago to widespread scorn; if for no other reason than the fact that there already was a sequel to ‘A Christmas Story‘ out there!

Even for a dance-music icon, Oakenfold has seen and done it all: He's toured around the world and worked with U2, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, New Order and dozens of other stars. He's scored films and video games; he's held club residencies in England, Spain and now Las Vegas.
Still, with such a rich past, it was pleasing to hear Oakenfold say how exciting dance music is these days.

The Oscars are now over and we are now looking back at the awards show to highlight the best and strangest parts of it. Unfortunately there weren't that many. As always the "In Memoriam" part ends up missing someone. While Michael Jackson, Brittany Murphy and Patrick Swayze were all honored, actress Farrah Fawcett ("Charlie's Angels") was forgotten for some reason. She passed away on June 25th, 2009, which means that she should have been includead in the segment. Meanwhile, late writer/director John Hughes (Ferris Bueller's Day off, The Breakfast Club) got his own tribute as he was honored by Molly Ringwalk, Matthew Broderick, Jon Cryer, Macaulay Culkin and many others. In addition, Ben Stiller came out in full Na'vi outfit for his "Avatar" segment. Stiller was previously planning to do the sketch with Sacha Baron Cohen, but the Academy deemed it too offensive and were worried that James Cameron would...

As many search for answers to justify this tragic death, friends, coworkers, and celebrity admirers of Murphy send out their condolences. Angelo Bertolotti only saw his daughter a few times a year and admitted to the press that they were not as close as they once were. Still in shock from the news that his 32 year old daughter...

Brittany Murphy, the actress who got her start in the sleeper hit "Clueless" and rose to stardom in "8 Mile" before her movie roles declined in recent years, died Sunday in Los Angeles of what appeared to be natural causes, a Los Angeles County coroner's official said. She was 32.
Murphy was pronounced dead at 10:04 a.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Sally Stewart said.
Murphy was transported to the hospital after the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call at 8 a.m. at the home she shared with her husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack, in the Hollywood Hills.
Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said Murphy apparently collapsed in the bathroom, and authorities were looking into her medical history.
