Not so magical
'My Little Pony: Pony Life' "Magical Mare Story Tour"/"Life of Pie" (2021)
Opening thoughts: Neither "Magical Mare-Story Tour" and "Life of Pie" worked that well, especially the latter which does nothing new or appealing with a premise that didn't endear that much to begin with. The former had potential and moments, but not enough, semi-watchable as a curio but nothing special. Again it felt like the improvement had not happened. The double bill is not irredeemable and "Magical Mare-Story Tour" is reasonably watchable, plus it is never anywhere near as bad as the worst of Season 1. It is a pretty weak outing though that fails in too many areas.
Good things: Game voice acting that has vim and variety.
Did think that "Magical Mare-Story Tour" did a few mildly amusing moments and also moments of creative visuals and nice character moments that felt in character and not reliant on exaggerated flaws.
Bad things: The story in "Magical Mare-Story Tour" is too conventional and is still very thin, with some very rushed pacing and a too simple and rehashed moral. "Life of Pie" is incredibly bland and pretty aimless and an already old hat and unappealing premise is executed with no creativity or freshness. The plotting is barely there and the pace drags a lot in this segment. Very little heart and charm in either. Humour throughout the episode is too little and is too juvenile and forced. Nothing endearing or relatable with Pie Pie, who is annoying and too pushy here.
The animation is rushed and careless looking throughout with no imagination or vibrancy. The music never fits with what goes on, with a grating theme tune. Both segments are low on laughs and what there are is mostly forced and juvenile. The character writing is one dimensional with none of the characters having much to them. After 'Friendship is Magic' did so well breaking away from the "only for primary school period girls" stereotypes wrongly associated with the franchise for so long, the characters come over as dumbed down stereotypes with that target audience stereotype being reinforced.
Concluding thoughts: Very weak double bill overall.
3/10.
