After a decade in which more black actors won Academy Awards than in the past seventy years combined, 2011 represents a setback: the Oscars failed to nominate a single black artist, and Vanity Fair's influential “Young Hollywood” cover featured a single black performer.
So here at NextMovie, we're gonna celebrate Black History Month by highlighting the hottest, up-and-coming young black actors. These nine-under-30 might not all be household names yet, but we think they represent the next generation of Anthony Mackies, Zoe Saldanas, and Will Smiths (literally).
Gabourey Sidibe
Sidibe's Academy-Award nomination for her debut performance in "Precious" sends her to the top our list. She may be 27, but Sidibe's making a name for herself playing teens on the big screen (she co-stars opposite Zoe Kravitz in the upcoming indie drama "Yelling to the Sky," which premieres at the Berlin Film Fest this month) and on premium cable with the always-amazing...

Whew, where to start. It’s a tough category to gauge with the wide range of junk on all fronts of cinema in general, but this is a subject I have had running through out my mind, since day one of writing for this site. Scrolling down the categories of which to label and stipulate what the written piece of information would fall under, I saw a tag of Worst Black Film. This stamp was burned into my mind for so long and started to run the rolodex of junk I had seen, and also some I needed to still witness, because let’s face it, Tyler Perry is still popping shit out, two a year.
But this is also a tough criteria to tackle as I tend to like crap and junk in general. The campy, sappy and overblown, overacted ridiculousness that flickers at us can be overall fun.

Here’s another one of those projects that’s long been in development, appears to be complete, but has seemingly disappeared; never released; nowhere to be found.
This one is called Boogie Town, and it’s written and directed by the same dude who wrote and directed You Got Served (remember that? – the $8 million 2004 film that starred Marques Houston, Meagan Good, Steve Harvey and others, that went on to gross over $40 million domestically. Not bad right?). The filmmaker’s name is Chris Stokes by the way.
And much like You Got Served, Boogie Town also centers around rival hip-hop dance crews, and it also stars Marques Houston (Houston is to Stokes what Denzel Washington used to be to Spike Lee; this is the 4th time they’ve teamed up as actor and director since 2001).
The synopsis for Boogie Town (budgeted at a reported $1.3 million) reads: “… a modern day West side Story...

Lisa Soltau was living in Seattle when her friend Bonnie Gillespie sent her a book she had written called "Casting Qs," a compilation of interviews with casting directors. "I read it and I absolutely loved all the aspects of the job," says Soltau. "I loved the entertainment industry and movies and television. The process of casting sounded wonderful."She called one of the two casting offices in Seattle and ended up working as an intern there for about six months. But the CD told her she should move to New York or Los Angeles if she really wanted to pursue a career in casting. "I picked L.A. because I had lived there once for about three years and I thought it would be easier to acclimate there," Soltau says. "Plus I wanted to work on 'Six Feet Under,' which was airing at the time.

'I think people will be shocked with her performance,' Houston says of Disney star.

Marques Houston isn't just going to boogie on the dance floor in his new flick, "Boogie Town." He'll also be getting his boogie on with Disney star Brenda Song. You see, the two have one very steamy sex scene in the forthcoming flick. And, Houston jokes, there were no Disney suits on the set while the two got it on.
"I shot my first onscreen sex scene with the lovely Brenda Song. It was an experience," he told MTV News. "Lights, camera, action. There's cameras all around and you're trying to create a moment that looks real. We made it comfortable for each other, but it was very, very nerve-racking. I'll never forget it, and it turned out well. It was professional.

Finally, a dance movie for fans of Underworld and Equilibrium! Chris Stokes, director of You Got Served, is back with one of the most amazing and absolutely ludicrous concepts I've heard in a long time. The year is 2015, and in New York City the police chief has outlawed battle dancing after the tragic death of his son. Two rival dance crews (The Trojans and The Warriors) organize an underground place where they can continue their battles, but they are constantly being hunted by the Boogie Police. Little do they know, a secret government agency wants to capture the leaders of the two crews to use their blood to create super soldiers for World War III! Boogie Town is loosely based on West Side Story, and if this trailer is any indication, it's going to be very... blue. Apparently this trailer has been floating around the web for a few months now,...

Yes. Sci-Fi Footloose meets You Got Served! Exclamation point. Actually, Chris Stokes' Boogie Town probably won't be as good as it sounds, but it is set in a ludicrous near-future New York City where dancing is illegal. So, kids start an underground "battle dancing" scene. Obviously, it's also being labeled a "modern West Side Story for the hip-hop generation," and it's set in 2015, so hopefully there will be hoverboards. Then it would actually be better than it sounds. Anyway, Vivendi will release the film next summer. Another music-genre sci-fi/fantasy: Stephen Edmond's Emo Boy comic book is being turned into a movie, ...
