Sex & Nudity

  • None. This a very family-oriented production, one that any child can watch. It is just as family-oriented as the Balanchine version, the 1985, 2001 and 2009 Royal Ballet versions, or the 1964 German made-for-TV abridged version, which is now available on DVD as part of the Warner archive series.

Violence & Gore

  • Extremely mild violence. The moment in which Clara and the toy soldiers rig up a gigantic mousetrap may strike viewers as funny.

Sex & Nudity

  • Clara is played by two ballerinas in this production, as in the Maurice Sendak-Kent Stowell one.Towards the end of Act II, Clara, played by Elizabeth Powell, a young ballerina obviously no older than about fourteen, is placed into a contraption that is similar to one that a magician uses to make people disappear and reappear. The contraption is spun around by the Sugar Plum Fairy's attendants and Clara, now played by Maria Kotchetkova, emerges as a beautiful adult woman. This, intended as a magic feat in this interpretation, is done so that Clara can dance the Pas de Deux with the adult Nutcracker Prince. Realistically, it is probably also done because the younger Clara's dancing is not as difficult or elaborate as the adult Clara's. It is a moment intended to be innocently romantic; there is no kissing or anything, and Clara and the Prince do not marry as in some versions. At the end of the ballet, Clara wakes up to find it was a dream and she is a smaller young girl again, but the ending contains no hint of sadness. The Sugar Plum Fairy is also in this version, but she only dances in the "Waltz of the Flowers". Her dances in the Pas de Deux are performed by Clara, who takes part in the Final Waltz with the Nutcracker Prince as well.
