This short film was made for Warner Home Video in 2008. It's a documentary on the making of the movie, "Some Came Running" in 1965. That film was based on a 1957 novel of the same title by James Jones. Jones had written "From Here to Eternity" which had been turned into a smash hit movie in 1953.
This "how-to" documentary is unusual, in that it was made 43 years after the film. And, it doesn't have any of the original participants. So, film historians discuss the film, especially Vincent Minnelli, the director. One noted that Minnelli grew up in small towns, so he could portray this as he did without making judgment calls on the life there.
Those interviewed talked about Minnelli techniques and "breakthroughs" in filming. Some scenes in the movie have stark color contrasts and effects. Notable is a chase scene at the carnival in which the Chicago gangster is out to get Dave and Ginnie. In one scene, with the dramatic music background, we see a black silhouette of a man against a fire- red background. I agree that this was a striking effect, but some other such stuff didn't seem as artistic to me as it did melodramatic. This movie came very close to formulaic soap operas that were running on TV in the 1950s and 1960s.
