The light before a good sunset in Tennessee changes from fiery pink to a flood of gold until the sky eventually turns a dark enough purple to be lit by a falling star — just as Hank Williams wrote it. In September of 2014, the summer heat had eased up enough to enjoy the outdoors at dusk and those same colors began to fill the sky as Tom Hiddleston was finishing a run along the hillsides south of Nashville. In under 40 days, filming for the Hank Williams biopic I Saw the Light would begin in Shreveport,...

Pre-credit sequence. Tyler is gone, so is Carolyn in charge now? "Tribal tonight was a whole lot of fun for me," Mike says, giddy at breaking up The Six. He knows, however, that he either has to find another Idol or keep winning Immunity to stay around. "Everybody wants Mike gone," Dan says, claiming that Mike has proven to be selfish and self-centered, promising that he won't work with Mike, who has to be the hero. "Mike, he has to be the hero. It's the fact that he's so arrogant and he's so condescending," Dan insists, reminding us of his advantage and the alliance he thinks he's in with. "I don't trust Dan," Carolyn says, calling Dan the biggest threat other than Mike. Carolyn wants options and tells Mike that they have to target Dan next, if they can find the numbers. She also tells Mike about the nature of Dan's advantage,...

Pre-credit sequence. "I've got a really solid plan," Rodney says. He's beginning the episode by plotting Mike's demise. Tyler is intrigued. Mike is watching with caution and no longer considers Rodney to be part of his alliance. Bid Fortuna. It's time for a pre-credits "Survivor" auction. How odd. They each have $500 and, as always, the auction could end without warning. A covered plate goes to Will for $100. "It's probably grilled ass or something," Will says. Nope. It's a mystery note. "You just bought yourself out of this auction," the note says, telling Will to leave immediately. Everybody is shell-shocked by what happened to poor Will. But an uncovered plate of chicken and waffles goes for $300 to Shirin, who claims she didn't want to bid for an advantage. But most of the group is waiting for an advantage. So because the "big players" are holding out and not bidding for food,...

Pre-credit sequence. When we left things, Jenn had just orchestrated the season's best Tribal Council, sending Kelly packing. Rodney's pissed off by the way things went down, blaming Mike for swapping the vote from Hali to Jenn, calling him "our idiot redneck." Using this as his wedge issue, Rodney lobbies Will. Rodney's frustration with Mike remains off in the future and he's only securing Will for a long-term decapitation. "Sorry I'm still here to disappoint you," Jenn tells Mike, who respects her play. "The No Collars are back in town," Jenn says, vowing to mess with things while she can. This is a mighty cocky four-person minority alliance. I'm sure eventually somebody will look at the numbers, though. There's no "me" in Salami, at least not if you spell it correctly. It's Day 20 and they have a newly caught catfish at Merica. They also have some leftover Merge...

Pre-credit sequence. No Collar returns to camp after dispatching with Vince. Nobody's especially sure what happened, at least nobody other than Will, who screwed up the split-voting plan and also screwed up his chances of being trusted by anybody else. With new understanding, Joe is less grateful that Will booted his nemesis and more distrustful of a new nemesis. Will says he's playing chess, not checkers, which is irrelevant, because what he's actually supposed to be playing here is "Survivor." Nina announces that she knows she's the next one out. Once again, she's feeling like an outsider and once again she wants everybody to know that she's feeling like an outsider. She just asks people not to whisper behind her back. "Enjoy yourself, Nina!" Jenn instructs her, with the most half-hearted pep talk imaginable. We know how Jenn really feels about Nina anyway and it isn't especially attractive. "I get it.

From Scott Cooper, the critically-acclaimed writer and director of Crazy Heart, comes Out Of The Furnace, a gripping and gritty drama about family, fate, circumstance, and justice that hits theaters today. Recently, Director Scott Cooper and stars Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson and Zoë Saldana sat down with press in a small press conference to talk about the film. Check it out below.
Russell Baze (Christian Bale) has a rough life: he works a dead-end blue collar job at the local steel mill by day, and cares for his terminally ill father by night. When Russell’s brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) returns home from serving time in Iraq, he gets lured into one of the most ruthless crime rings in the Northeast and mysteriously disappears. The police fail to crack the case, so – with nothing left to lose – Russell takes matters into his own hands, putting his life on...

The penultimate episode of Food Network Star‘s ninth season was like one of those defective loaves of Italian bread you sometimes get at the supermarket: Everything looks fine when you throw it in your cart, but you get it home, slice into it, and discover there’s a giant, hollowed-out air bubble in the middle.
Likewise, the final four contestants’ pilot pitches to Food Network execs Bob Tuschman and Susie Fogelson — I’ve missed those two! — felt oddly rushed and insubstantial. Stacey, Russell, Damaris and (Ugh) Rodney each had around 30 seconds to present their best TV show idea, but...

The "American Idol" contestants are back in a Top 11 due to the save being used last week on Casey Abrams. Now they're tackling Elton John - let's see how they fared.
When the judges arrive, Tyler and J.Lo are looking particularly feftching tonight. Tyler's got his best "Saturday Night Fever" outfit going and J.Lo's dress is to die for - she is disgustingly beautiful sometimes. Like, she's always beautiful, but then sometimes it's just too much. Seacrest is also dapper in a blue suit. At least Randy isn't wearing a sweater, we guess.
Before we get to the performances, I just have to comment - does it seem like J.Lo has to sit in the middle not because she's a girl (so that it alternates boy-girl-boy), but because Steven Tyler often wants to strangle Randy Jackson with one of his many scarves? Just me?
Here are your Top 10 plus 1 Idols,...

Sorry, this week is the very abbreviated holiday link post. Just didn’t have that much this week. Just hope my American readers had a good holiday. (I was very happy to have the time off.)
This week’s Must Look — as opposed to the usual Must Read — is actual celluloid strips of Stan Brakhage’s Anticipation of the Night being restored by the Motion Picture Academy, courtesy of Phil Solomon. Be sure to click through for the large images. First, there’s the hand-written title sequence and frames from the main part of the film, including visible tape splices, if you look closely enough. So then, the Must Read is Electric Sheep’s write-up of Lewis Klahr’s Prolix Satori series that screened recently at the 54th BFI London Film Festival. Haven’t seen them myself, but they sound amazing. Rhizome has a video example of the Paik/Abe Raster Manipulator,...
