Warning: Spoilers
"Barstool Cowboy" tells the story of a middle-aged man, who spends his evenings in a bar with drinking and desperation since his wife has left him. When he meets a young girl, he soon starts to grow feelings for her and tries everything to impress her just to land on the same barstool once again.

I can't even tell why but I somehow liked the movie. You clearly see that there was hardly any budget involved and some of the actors are probably not designated to have a Hollywood career, but still you easily develop sympathy for this sad man, as he tries to become his best. The story in itself is nothing spectacular, it is more an episode out of life but the dialogues are fun to follow from time to time and generally you can spend this film in a very laid-back mood, what makes the few highlights hit in even harder.

All in all this is surely far from being a blockbuster but it is a thoughtful movie produced with a lot of heart and if you're not looking for a spectacle in the first place, this could clearly be worth a watch.

Patience-testing
timhorsburgh16 February 2009
After enduring a patience-testing opening scene that quickly establishes that this film will be comprised of poor visuals, clunky dialogue and inexpressive acting, I watched on for another twenty minutes as the meandering, clichéd plot churned through the gears without any semblance of reality or spark of imagination. To give the film a chance, I skipped forward a couple of scenes, but things had only gotten worse. The sound was particularly poor, and the lighting in some interior scenes appears to have been inspired by Victorian-era fog. This is a talky, meandering film that I couldn't finish. I wouldn't subject it to any audience

Quick review

Opening sequence sums the movie up. Long winded and devoid of any resemblance of a worthwhile plot. You have to write ten lines of text to place a comment so I will describe the urges and emotions that this movie made me experience. Initially as the first scene unfolded, I had an overwhelming desire to phone the producer and director of this movie and ask them why? I then had a strange impulse to crack the screen of my television then pour lighter fluid into it before setting it alight and throwing it out the window. The characters were pretentious and unlikable, the cinematography and direction was of a high school level and the movie as a whole is up there as one of the worst movies of all time. It wasn't even amusingly bad, just plain bad.

Bad camera-work holds them back.

Barstool Cowboy stars Darrel Hammond and Avril Lavigne look-a-likes Tim Woodward and Rachel Lien (As Mick and Arcy, respectively) as two more characters out to find themselves, or their former selves, in the case of Mick.

Mick has just been dumped by his girlfriend in a "cruel way" (as he describes it), and has confined himself - and his briar patch beard - to a stool at the local bar. As he discusses his problem with whomever listens, he confides that he's willing to stay in the stool for three months... seemingly hoping his old girlfriend will come looking for him in that time, so that he may beg for forgiveness.

Shortly into his tenure at the bar, a woman is spotted outside, drawing sketches of the building. The men inside complain about women like her, and how they can be spotted from a mile away simply by spotting their Chuck Taylor's. After Mick blows off the drunk suggestions of the patrons, he goes outside to see what she's up to.

Soon enough, Mick finds himself enamored with Arcy, the fittingly artsy student. They spend several days together, going from place to place, while Arcy unknowingly starts to release Mick from his lull - to his amazement. Unfortunately, around the same time, Arcy begins telling Mick - "Don't fall in love with me".

As we follow this love story, we quickly get wrapped up in the characters of Mick and Arcy - you want to know how their story will end, despite some nagging issues with the film. The actors that portray Mick and Arcy are the two best on screen - this is very evident from as early as the second and third scenes of the movie. When you can clearly see that certain people were picked to star in a movie because they were better than the other eight people that showed up on casting day, you get a sinking feeling.

The camera-work and lighting do not match this story at all. The lighting is often so harsh, and the camera is so consumer grade, that you can't help but think you're watching an extended online video. The best indie movies are those that you don't realize are independent until you read the back of the box. I feel bad for the writer and director, because had it not been for the areas I mentioned that lacked, this movie would've exceeded my expectations.

But as it stands, I cannot overlook the acting of the background actors, the camera-work of a supposed "professional", and the poor planning of the producers, amongst this otherwise great movie.

The old, old story

Warning: Spoilers
I started watching and went to something else. Sometime later, I decided to give it a go. It is actually a decent movie with a moral. It's the same story as the old woman with the rattlesnake, although Mick should have known better. Arcy may not have been playing him but she set him up for a big fall - then pulled the rug out from under him. This is a story of female treachery. At the end, Mick realizes he should have listened to his fellow bar patrons and left the girl alone.
