Merlin's mother begs for Camelot's help against warlord Kanen. They won't even leave their home village Elgon in order to survive. King Uther decides that crossing the border would constitute an unacceptable war risk. Merlin goes home to help, followed by Morgana and Gwen. Arthur sneaks out to follow and takes command of the desperate stand. The peasant militia looks so inept even Arthur's courage nearly fails, but he's persuaded. Meanwhile Merlin is challenged by his childhood friend, William, to use magic even if that betrays his secret to Arthur, compromising their calling for the realm's sake.
