Quotes

  • Andrea Rojas : How's Newfoundland?

Lena Luthor : Full of charming coastline. And an easy journey, thanks to the CatCo jet.

Andrea Rojas : Oh, it was my pleasure. You know, I have to say, I think the last time you sounded this good was back in boarding school.

Lena Luthor : For so many years, thoughts of my mother caused me so much pain. But... you know, to finally have moved past that, to be in the town where she grew up... frankly, it's a relief. Oh, by the way, did you get that picture I texted you?

Andrea Rojas : I did. You are your mother's spitting image. But who are the others?

Lena Luthor : Well, based on the letters I found in Maine, they're her childhood friends, Florence Abbott and Margaret Bishop. If my research is correct, Margaret still lives in Fortune Bay. There's so much I don't know about my mother. I'm hoping she can fill in the gaps.

Andrea Rojas : Promise you'll let me know if there's anything else I can do.

Lena Luthor : Actually, there is. The other woman in the photo on the right, Florence, I haven't been able to locate her.

Andrea Rojas : If having a media empire is good for one thing, it's digging things up. I'll call you if I have something. Until then, happy hunting.

  • Florence Abbott : This one's my favorite. It was rare to catch Elizabeth in front of the lens, so enchanted with the world around her, she often forgot herself.

Lena Luthor : Have you shown this to Peggy? I mean, it could bring her some peace. She deserves that much.

Florence Abbott : By the time I worked up the courage, she wouldn't hear it.

Lena Luthor : But your... your stone could show her the truth. Got me to question my cynicism. I'm sure it can reach anyone.

Florence Abbott : For Peggy, Elizabeth and I will always be the reason her parents are dead. Magic can do a great deal of good, but it cannot reach everyone. For you, it's different. You have your mother's gift.

Lena Luthor : No, that's absurd. Look, I said I questioned my cynicism. I didn't say I dropped it. Florence, I believe what you showed me, but I also believe that there's a scientific explanation for it. I just need to find it.

Florence Abbott : The laws of witchcraft work on a different plane than the laws of science. Like two parallel lines, you'll never find a point where they intersect. You would not have been able to use the stone if you didn't have the spark, Lena. You have the gift, should you choose to embrace it.

  • Florence Abbott : Who are you?

Lena Luthor : I mean you no harm.

Florence Abbott : My God! You look just like...

Lena Luthor : Elizabeth Walsh. I'm her daughter. I came here to...

Florence Abbott : I know why you're here. I've been waitin' for this day a long time.

  • Florence Abbott : Your mother visits me in my dreams, you know. She's told me all about you. Said you'd show up here one day looking for answers. Warned me to be precise. She says you're a scientist.

Lena Luthor : Why, it doesn't take a ghost for you to know that. A simple Google search would suffice.

Florence Abbott : Oh, I don't trust computers. I get my information from the source. Sit.

    [Lena sits down]

Florence Abbott : I need a drop of your blood.

Lena Luthor : [scoffing]  Look, it's like you said, I'm a scientist and I don't want to waste your time, but I don't believe in magic.

Florence Abbott : Let the truth persuade you.

[as Lena pricks her finger, Florence squeezes a droplet of blood into her basin; working her magic, images from the past appear]

Florence Abbott : I come from a long line of witches. Most people shunned me for it. But your mother and Margaret, they had the gift, too. They sought me out. Witchcraft requires a deep knowledge of the earth. Every leaf, seed, twig is as alive and unique as you or me. And learning the language of nature takes patience, rigor. And your mom committed herself to the work, like you with your science. Now, drawing power from nature, that part can't be taught. It takes a spark, and your mother's spark was powerful. We three worked quietly, content, until Margaret started showin' up with bruises on her face, a broken arm. Her husband Tommy was well-liked. No one believed he beat his wife. So... we took matters into our own hands. The truth is, we only meant to scare, but the magic got away from us. There's no denying that fire was unnatural. The town turned on us, threatened to stone us. They left Margaret to her shame. With my family history, they hunted me, wanted me dead. I had to hide.

Lena Luthor : And my mother?

Florence Abbott : She escaped to the States. And Lizzie called me once, said she'd taken up with Lionel Luthor. Said she was living under his control because she no longer trusted herself. Lena... your mother wants you to know she was only trying to protect Margaret. Her heart was pure. She didn't realize her own power.

Lena Luthor : Thank you for telling me this.

Florence Abbott : Believe me when I tell you, your mother sees you. And she's very proud of the woman you are.

  • Lena Luthor : Andrea, I was just gonna call you.

Andrea Rojas : Well, I hope it was to pencil some thank-you drinks when you get back, because I found the woman in your photo, Florence Abbott. It took some digging. She gives new meaning to "off the grid." But rumor is she disappeared because she was connected to a suspicious death, Margaret Bishop's husband.

Lena Luthor : Listen, I appreciate the help, but I'm heading home.

Andrea Rojas : What? So soon?

Lena Luthor : This trip was a mistake. I'm done.

Andrea Rojas : Lena, if you found some messy family history, you know that's nothing new.

Lena Luthor : Yeah, well, I would have expected it from the Luthors, but I should have known my mother's side would have been just as awful.

Andrea Rojas : But what did you find out?

Lena Luthor : It's hearsay, but I've heard enough. I just don't wanna put myself through it.

Andrea Rojas : This has been a gap in your life for so long, and this is your chance to fill in the blanks. The unknown is always scarier than the truth.

Lena Luthor : Unless the truth really is bad.

Andrea Rojas : You can't deal with the past until you face it. I e-mailed you the files on Florence. Just take a look at them. At least think about it. Information doesn't hurt people. Secrets do.

  • Lena Luthor : My mother killed her? No. I mean, that's absurd. She was gentle and kind.

Peggy Bishop : She was conniving and opportunistic, enough to find herself a wealthy man to give her a new life, while my mother withered away.

Lena Luthor : Okay, listen. Maybe... maybe you're right, okay? My mother died when I was very young, and there's so much I don't know about her. But I came here to find the truth, no matter what that is.

[showing Peggy the picture of their mothers]

Lena Luthor : And clearly, our mothers were friends. Perhaps that changed, but there's another woman in this picture, Florence Abbott. And if you could just tell me everything you know about them, I promise that you will never have to speak to me again.

Peggy Bishop : They were in a coven.

Lena Luthor : A coven? What, like cauldrons and spells?

Peggy Bishop : I've seen you in the news running arm-in-arm with a bulletproof alien. But you don't believe in magic?

Lena Luthor : I believe what I can see.

Peggy Bishop : Right, well... 33 years ago, I saw your mother set fire to a shed without lightin' a single match. And my father was inside it. He died. Your mom fled. Florence vanished, leaving my mom to deal with the fallout.

Lena Luthor : Listen, this has to be a mistake. My mother wasn't like that.

Peggy Bishop : Oh, I see. You came here looking for a fairy tale that you dreamed up. Well, your mother wasn't the heroine. She was the villain. I get that your family is used to leaving a trail of bodies in their wake, but you could at least have the decency to leave them buried.

  • Dee-Dee : I'm Dee-Dee, your innkeeper. And may I say we are honored to have you in our town. In our inn! Do you have bags?

    Lena Luthor : Yeah.

    Dee-Dee : David!

David : [tipping his cap]  Hello, ma'am.

Dee-Dee : So, what brings you to our corner of the island? Luthor business?

Lena Luthor : Oh, it's not business at all. It's personal. My mother grew up here.

Dee-Dee : Your mother? How wonderful. Six degrees of separation and all. What was her name?

    Lena Luthor : Elizabeth Walsh.

[a thud is heard; they turn and see David dropped Lena's suitcase]

Dee-Dee : [going and whispering to him]  She was just a dirty witch.

    Lena Luthor : Excuse me?

    Dee-Dee : We're sorry, Ms. Luthor, but it seems your room's double-booked.

    Lena Luthor : What?

Dee-Dee : Sadly, we don't have a room for you after all. You need to go.

  • Peggy Bishop : What can I get you? Well, looks like you could use something strong.

Lena Luthor : Yeah. Um... a whiskey. Neat, please. And some information, I hope. I already asked at the bed and breakfast, but they were decidedly unwelcoming.

Peggy Bishop : What, Dee-Dee and David? That's odd. Never met two warmer people.

Lena Luthor : Well, I was hoping that the owner of this pub could shed some light on why they got so upset. I mean, if she's around, Margaret Bishop.

Peggy Bishop : Most folks call me Peggy. Better than Margaret, Jr.

Lena Luthor : Well, in that case, I think our mothers were old friends.

Peggy Bishop : Really? What's your mom's name?

    Lena Luthor : Elizabeth Walsh.

Peggy Bishop : [turning just as cold]  Elizabeth Walsh was no friend of my mother's. And if you got any decency at all, you'll get the hell out of Fortune Bay. Haven't you folks caused enough pain?

Lena Luthor : I-I don't understand. I mean, maybe if I could just talk to your mother.

Peggy Bishop : You can't, 'cause she's dead. And your mom's the one who killed her.
