The Busan International Film Festival put aside many of its recent internal and local political problems to Tuesday unveil a large selection ranging from bleeding edge art titles to international festival favorites.
“The difficult times are not behind us, but hard work has made this year’s festival better than ever,” said programmer and interim festival chief Nam Dong-chul, speaking at an online press conference.
International guests expected to attend the festival include Luc Besson, Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing, Japanese directors Hamaguchi Ryusuke and Kore-Eda Hirokazu, Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf, and Korean Americans Justin Chon (“Gook”) and Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari”).
Hong Kong-based superstar Chow Yun-fat has been named as Busan’s Asian Filmmaker of the Year and will be in person to receive the award. The Korean Cinema Award will presented to the late Yun Jung-hee, the actress who starred in “The General’s Mustache” and Lee Chang-dong’s 2010 drama “Poetry.

The film’s original producer Alfredo Leone is aboard as exec-producer.
Franco and Kilgore have acquired the remake rights to the 1974 feature which follows the bungled robbery of three violent criminals and the hostages they take – including a young woman, a middle-aged man, and his child – as they attempt to make a clean getaway from the police.
An adaptation of short story Man and Boy by Michael J. Carroll, Rabid Dogs was a departure for Bava from his colorful horror films. The film had a challenged journey to screen. Barcelona production-distribution outfit Filmax has picked up international rights to director-producer Ibon Cormenzana’s “Guilt” ahead of its presentation at the Pre-Cannes Screenings, which run June 21-25.
The Basque helmer directs his long-time partner Manuela Velles who co-developed the topical drama with him and was actually pregnant at the time of the shoot.
Velles plays a woman who hides away in the mountains after being raped by an acquaintance. In an effort to overcome her trauma, she isolates herself in a mountain cabin, leaving behind a boyfriend, family and friends.
Nature plays a key role in her efforts to heal herself as she bears up under the weight of her pain, her guilt and her loneliness.
“‘Guilt’ is one of the most authentic, visceral films that we’ve had in our catalogue in recent years,” said Iván Díaz, head of international at Filmax.

Producer Steve Jaggi has forecast varying fortunes for Australian screen businesses across the next 12-18 months, depending on their capacity.
Speaking from Port Douglas, where production has just wrapped on his Netflix series Dive Club, the proprietor of the Steve Jaggi company tells If the “limited window of opportunity” for Australian screen businesses to gain market share as a result of the country’s relative handling of Covid-19 is contrasted with rising barriers for entry.
“My prediction is that the next 18-24 months will be something of a bonanza for business with international outlooks and the ability to produce at volume and scale,” he says.
“The flip side of the coin is that solo producers and very small production companies will likely be snuffed out as the domestic market continues to contract at pace.”
Jaggi’s company was prolific in the second half of 2020, shooting three features, as well as the 12-episode Dive Club.
