Theaters can’t live by comic book and other franchises alone; they need a resurgence of standalone successes in other genres. “Ticket” and “Crawdads” are also the kinds of projects that top streamers want to corral, with limited or no theatrical footprint.

“Ticket to Paradise” (Universal) debuts on PVOD tomorrow (likely at 19.99), and it can’t come a minute too soon for digital platforms. The absence of major new entries, plus disappointing results for two recent one, has left a void that the George Clooney/Julia Roberts rom-com should happily fill.
For the studio, a film that opened under 50 million dropping on PVOD after the third weekend is standard. Its gross this past weekend was 8.5 million (#3 overall). That’s not great, but that’s more than half of its opening (a normal third weekend might be more like a third of that), with the potentially of it continuing well. Particularly as counter-programming to “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Disney), it might hold appeal as an alternative, with the potential of continuing to play through the month.
Holding to normal plans makes sense, though it is a shot to theaters, which could use all the alternative programming around.

Netflix’s highly touted and well publicized (perhaps too well) Marilyn Monroe biopic “Blonde” dropped off its top 10 movie chart after only eight days, only three of those at number one. This stunning result reaffirms the suspicion that, as much as subscribers gravitate to originals, top directors and awards attention don’t provide a leg up when it comes to viewer interest.
There can be exceptions and it’s likely that “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” will be one of them. Rian Johnson’s film will have the benefit of its predecessor, a theatrical hit, as well as its cast and strong reviews..
Netflix originals can thrive, but it’s usually for the short term. The current chart has three originals among the top five and these films received a fraction of the “Blonde” attention. It suggests that while viewers may crave social buzz about movies, that’s not...

’There is no point in releasing 25 movies a year. We need to be selective,’ says Belga’s Patrick Vandenbosch.
Patrick Vandenbosch, chief executive of leading Benelux distributor Belga, has outlined the company’s new strategy following its acquisition this week of Marc Punt’s Amsterdam-based distributor Independent Films.
Belga previously had a 50/50 partnership with Independent and released its films in the Netherlands through the company, while Independent’s films were released in Belgium through Belga. Now, Belga has taken over the Dutch outfit entirely.

Few Netflix originals have received as much advance press and social media attention than Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde,” his adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ novel about Marilyn Monroe starring Ana de Armas. It would have been surprising had it not immediately risen to #1 on the streamer’s top 10 movie list — and it did. That lasted three days.
Facing critical backlash and less-than-stellar word of mouth, it’s now at #3. To add to the ignominy, what replaced it was the Gerard Butler thriller “Last Seen Alive,” which had a brief run as a direct-to-vod release in May.
In recent weeks, Netflix originals “Lou,” “End of the Road,” “Me Time,” Day Shift,” and “Look Both Ways” all spent more time atop its movie-watching chart. Some had stars like Kevin Hart, Mark Wahlberg, Queen Latifah, and Jamie Foxx to elevate them. De Armas is not the same boldface name, but her credits include “Knives Out,...

What did it take to get “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount/4.99-5.99) back to #1 on all three of the VOD charts we follow? A steep price cut. The summer hit enjoyed two across-the-board #1 weeks when it was initially released (at 19.99 to purchase), but then had to share top position with “Where the Crawdads Sing” (Sony/19.99) and “Beast” (Universal/19.99) by mid-September.
“Maverick” rebounding to #1 at iTunes and Google Play, both of which rank by traffic, isn’t surprising, but it is a rare lower-cost film to also take top spot at Vudu, which ranks by revenue. The film’s position means it had four times or more the activity of any film costing 19.99. Even more impressive? All of this comes ahead of whenever the film starts streaming on Paramount+.
At Netflix, two new films, both from heavyweight talent with whom the streamer is in business, lead at the moment. “Lou,” starring Allison Janney...

The first part of “The Strangers,” a trilogy directed by Renny Harlin and produced by Lionsgate, has started production in Slovakia. Rastislav Kuril’s Frame Film is servicing the production in the country. The producers registered for the 33 cash rebate at the Slovak Audiovisual Fund in June, Film New Europe reports.
Filming on the first part of the trilogy started in August on locations in and around Bratislava.
The trilogy is a remake of the 2008 film “The Strangers,” which was written and directed by Bryan Bertino, with Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman starring. Together with its 2018 sequel “The Strangers: Prey at Night,” it became a cult horror classic.
Starring Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez and Gabriel Basso, the film will follow Petsch’s character as she drives cross-country with her longtime boyfriend (Gutierrez) to begin a new life in the Pacific Northwest. When their car breaks down in Venus, Oregon, they...

August theatrical releases were a bit sparse, but “Partner Track,” “Lost Ollie” and seven other book-based projects found their way onto streamers last month, including HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon.” September has more theatrical releases, but fewer book adaptations to look forward to. Those that are coming out this month have rich history though, especially “The Rings of Power” series that Amazon has based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s books and appendices.
There’s also “The Silent Twins” starring Letitia Wright and Jodhi May as well as Andrew Dominik’s feature film “Blonde” adapted from Joyce Carol Oates’ book about the career of Marilyn Monroe.
Here are six book to screen adaptations coming out in September:

The latest installment in the After franchise, based on the books by Anna Todd, finally lands in theaters on Sept. 7. Spoken English evolved such useful phrases as “blah blah blah” and “yada yada yada” so that in conversation we don’t have to suffer through numbingly repetitive descriptions of the perfectly obvious. Sadly, no such shorthand exists in the “After” universe, which, now on its fourth instalment, seems dedicated to spinning the already vanishingly wispy romance between good-girl Tessa and bad-boy Hardin, YA fiction’s most colossally boring golden couple, into ever thinner straw. After a placeholder second film (“After We Collided”) and a wheel-spinning third (“After We Fell”), the new episode — which itself ramps up to a face-palming “to be continued” — can’t even charitably be said to be blah. It’s the space between the blahs.

Finished the first book, "After"? Check out the next installment, "After We Collided." Want to know what you're getting before snagging the book? If you don't mind spoilers, just keep reading to find out exactly what happens in "After We Collided."

"After We Collided" starts right after the revelation that Hardin only dated Tessa as a bet. Understandably, Tessa is destroyed by the news and wants nothing to do with Hardin. The boy, meanwhile, is desperate to win her back. Much of the book is a tug of war between these two, and of course, their journey is an emotional roller coaster of epic proportions.

Similar to recent weeks, we’re still in a holding pattern at the international box office, awaiting major new wide studio releases. There were a few milestones this session, however, and Japan has in general been a bright spot with local pic One Piece Film: Red and the continued thrum of Top Gun: Maverick while the market does the bulk of the lifting to potentially push Jurassic World Dominion across the 1B mark worldwide.
Universal/Amblin’s six-film Jurassic franchise has crossed the 6B mark globally. The current installment, Jurassic World Dominion, is now at a worldwide tally of 990.4M through Sunday. If you're not ready to say goodbye to Hardin (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) and Tessa (Josephine Langford) just yet, don't worry, you won't have to - well beyond "After Ever Happy"'s upcoming release. Tiffin just revealed in an August Instagram video that a fifth film is coming. Fans had previously thought the fourth film, out Sept. 7, was Tiffin and Langford's final contributions to the saga.
Said Tiffin, "We have just wrapped filming on the fifth after movie. I can't tell you too much about it yet but I can tell you that it will be called 'After Everything,' and I cannot wait for you all to see it."

You may know Hero Fiennes Tiffin as bad boy Hardin from "After," "After We Collided," "After We Fell," and "After Ever Happy," and while, yes, he is very, very hot, there's more to him than meets the eye. Tiffin is both an actor and a model, and you may also recognize him as young Voldemort from "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."
Recently, Tiffin starred in the romance film "First Love" alongside Sydney Park. Tiffin was initially reluctant to do another romance film because he wanted to branch out into other genres, but he was intrigued by the "different style of romance" in "First Love." He explained to Popsugar in June, "I was slightly worried about doing so many romances, because I'd be putting myself in a bit of a box, but I think I did the opposite of that by taking on another romance with such a different style.

Hero Fiennes Tiffin has a new romance movie out. The 24-year-old stars alongside Sydney Park in "First Love," which follows high-school seniors Jim (Tiffin) and Ann (Park) as they fall in love and navigate their impending departure to college. While the storyline may sound similar to Hardin and Tessa's in the After franchise, which Tiffin is best known for, the actor assures us it's totally different.
"There is something special if you can make it work with your first love."
"The scripts initially are so different, but how they're shot and brought to life is different," Tiffin tells Popsugar. "Jim's character is so different from Hardin's character. I feel like they're on the opposite ends of the spectrum, and that was definitely part of what drew me to doing another romance."
