AM1200 Poster*This is another guest post from English UVic graduate Ed Sum, who has written other reviews on Puppet Master: Axis of Evil, and the demon Lo. Here, Sum talks about experience watching the fourty minute, indie film AM1200.
Director/writer: David Prior.
Be careful in what you do late at night, driving down a lonely road while tuning in to the radio. When looking down at the dashboard to find an Am station, perhaps that is the last vestige of civilization you will ever find.
But watch out! What was that bump? Was that a hitchhiker that you just hit? No, that didn't happen in AM1200, but you will want to guess at what director David Prior wants to throw at you. Although not a completely original piece, this movie holds its ground as a great example of an independent film. There is plenty of suggestions of something...

David Prior has come up with something marvelous in the fourty minute short AM1200. The film is shot in high quality digital and the audio comes through in crystal clear Dolby Sr. This is a film that energizes the senses, while delivering a tense, quickly unraveling tale of a man alone on a highway. But, is he totally alone? The movie website Quiet Earth says of AM1200: "if AM1200 gets transmitted by a festival near you, I recommend you tune in." This review will second that notion, emphatically.
The writing is not a simple connect the dots plotline. Instead character Sam Larson (Eric Lange) embezzles from his own devious boss (Ray Wise), who then executes himself. Sam takes his withdrawal on the run, likely to Bermuda, before intercepting a strange call for help from the local radio station (AM1200). Here is a tip if you are in a horror movie.

DVD producer David Prior is making the leap to features. He'll helm an untitled thriller for Intrepid Pictures based on "terrifying" true events that occurred in Wisconsin in the 1990s. Prior will also be writing. In addition to working alongside David Fincher, Michael Bay, Peter Weir, Tim Burton, David Cronenberg and Guillermo del Toro on various DVD projects, Prior also directed the short horror film "AM1200" which ran the film fest circuit. Intrepid's Trevor Macy and Marc D. Evans are overseeing his latest endeavor.

Intrepid Pictures made a couple of announcements today via the trades, one centering on a sequel we all knew was going to happen and the other an as yet untitled thriller from first-time feature director David Prior.
Variety reports that Intrepid principals Trevor Macy and Marc D. Evans (The Strangers) have tapped former child actor and present DVD special features guru David Prior to helm and also write a genre thriller based on a series of terrifying events that occurred in Wisconsin in the Nineties.
"It's a strange, circuitous route (to directing my own film), but I think I was the right guy to do this, in the right place at the right time," Prior tells Variety, and honestly we're really looking forward to this one. Why? Allow me to direct you to the website for Prior's acclaimed horror short AM1200. This guy's got the goods, man!

In brief news, Intrepid Pictures is gearing up to begin filming The Strangers Part 2 this September for Relativity. Meanwhile, after a decade spent creating special DVD content for the films of other directors, David Prior (who directed the awesome indie short AM1200) will make his feature helming debut on an untitled thriller for Intrepid Pictures. You can read about that inside. Intrepid principals Trevor Macy and Marc D. Evans ("The Strangers") set Prior to helm and also write a genre thriller based on a series of terrifying events that occurred in Wisconsin in the 1990s. Prior is represented by Jeremy Platt at Spectacle and Greg Pedicin at Gersh. He has been a favorite of directors including David Fincher, Michael Bay, Peter Weir, Tim Burton, David Cronenberg and Guillermo del Toro, generating special footage on the DVD releases of their films.

If Am 1200 gets transmitted by a festival near you, I recommend you tune in. Qe spotted this little beauty back in October 2008, and now here are the details.
Am 1200 is not your average low budget short. First off, I'm guessing that David Prior pulled in a ton of favors from his Industry mates to ensure this 40 minute flick enjoys a look every bit as professional as a multimillion dollar production. The story is a treat. We start off with Harry Jones (Ray Wise, it's great to watch his face) giving Sam Larson (Eric Lange, also strong) some worldly and drunken advice on how to cheat their uncaring financial firm out of a big chunk of change. It seems that they follow through on the plan but it ends badly as shortly after,...

Finally a film festival near me, and it actually has some flicks I've been looking forward to seeing, but first off, I'm in Northern Colorado, so if you're going to Dff and would like to meet up, talk genre film, or just rip on Hollywood crap, drop me a line via our contact link at the bottom of the page. Dff runs November 13-23 at the Starz film center in Denver which is one of the only places which plays real films (I go there to do reviews of limited theatrical release stuff).
Of the highlights which include a bunch of dreary Cannes dramas, the one I would recommend most would be David Prior's Lovecraftian horror short AM1200. I just saw it this past Friday and it's nothing short of fantastic. Next we have something I want to warn people about, it's the French scifi flick Eden Log, it's incredibly cryptic and boring,...

After reading about this over on 24Fps and seeing it listed in an underground film festival, I decided to check it out. Written and directed by David Prior who's mostly done video documentaries, this 40 minute film looks like it starts off like many a corporate wash, but when it gets to the action, watch out! It's well lensed and looks a winner.
