The glory days of Cinecitta are evoked in Finally Dawn (Finalmente l’Alba), a sprawling story of uncertain tone – sometimes thrilled, sometimes appalled and sometimes as generally bewildered as nervous ingenue Mimosa (Rebecca Antonaci), an ordinary young woman of Rome who finds herself leading the way through this warren of a Wonderland. Cinecitta has recently revived its fortunes after a long slump, with a slow build of refurbishment and expansion, but director Saverio Costanzo leans heavily into nostalgia for times past, setting his story in the ‘50s when there were still legions of centurions marching around the studio lot and live animals awaiting their close-ups. A lion features here, roaring at passers-by. It may well be the film’s most sympathetic character.
Mimosa is not the least bit leonine. She is only at Cinecitta because her sister Iris (Sofia Panizzi) was approached at the local cinema by someone from the studio...

Kevin Spacey launched “machine gun” of “horrific” sexual comments at one of his accusers, leaving the alleged victim feeling “belittled and worthless,” a UK court heard Thursday.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said the incident happened at a West End theater in London in the mid-2000s and alleged the House of Cards actor then touched him in an intimate area. He made the allegations in a police interview seen today by the jury at Southwark Crown Court.
The man said today under cross-examination that the alleged assault felt like it lasted an “eternity.”
He added he felt “incredulous that [Spacey] could be so insensitive” and claimed the actor’s decision to come out as gay was “somebody not taking ownership” but instead allowed him to “disguise” his behavior.

Carey Mulligan was mistakenly announced as a BAFTA award winner during Sunday night’s ceremony.
The actress was incorrectly named as the winner of the Best Supporting Actress gong for her role in the MeToo movie “She Said”.
However, the award actually went to “The Banshees of Inisherin” actress Kerry Condon, the Independent reported.
The mistake was made after “Coda” star Troy Kotsur, who won the Best Supporting Actor award last year, presented the honour using sign language.
The sign language interpreter then mistakenly claimed Mulligan had won.

The whole thing was cut from the BBC One broadcast.
“This is a bad moment,” the interpreter was said to have told the audience at the Royal Festival Hall in London, U.K.
“A defibrillator needed for Carey Mulligan,” host Richard E. Grant then joked following Condon’s speech.

“I think we need to find a way to avoid the U.S. brainwash,” said Newen Connect CEO Rodolphe Buet at this morning’s Berlinale Series Adapting to the Market session.
The head of the French distributor urged global buyers to stop “copying too much from the U.S. audience” as he cited research that showed the streamers have far more U.S. and UK shows on their platforms locally than they do from the rest of the world.
Ruth Berry, ITV Studios Head of Global Distribution, struck a more positive tone when she said stories in foreign languages have become “far more accessible” due to audiences being more willing to watch dubbed or subtitled shows, which is “clearly an exciting opportunity.”
And Zdf Studios Vice President of Drama Robert Franke is “not too afraid” of “U.S. brainwash” as the market over the past decade has turned from “push to pull.

You Season 4 has kept Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley)’s hands clean so far. Joe is not directly responsible for the murders that are occurring in London, but he sure is involved. Even if Joe stops the Eat the Rich killer, there’s probably too much blood on Joe’s hands for him to walk away clean. But, what comeuppance he might ultimately face still stumps showrunner Sera Gamble.
Penn Badgley | Netflix
Gamble was a guest on The Hollywood Reporter’s TV’s Top Five podcast on Feb. 10 to discuss You Season 4 Part 1. She looked ahead to how things might end for Joe and explained why she struggles with deciding what that looks like. You Season 4 Part 2 premieres March 9 on Netflix.
Will Joe Goldberg get away with murder when ‘You’ ends?
It’s not like Joe hasn’t sacrificed. He gave up his son when he faked his death in the season 3 finale.

“It’s a film that always had the intention to change hearts and minds,” Brendan Fraser said of The Whale, for which he is nominated for the best actor Oscar, ahead of receiving the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s American Riviera Award on Tuesday night.
The popular star, who was greeted with huge applause by the Santa Barbarians who packed the historic Arlington Theater, discussed his life and career with Deadline‘s Pete Hammond, who described the actor’s recent resurgence, after several years out of the spotlight that he had occupied since the early 1990s, as “the Brenaissance.”
Coming from an “itinerate family” that spent considerable time in Europe, Fraser said that seeing plays in London as a kid hooked him on the idea of becoming an actor. He studied at a conservatory in Seattle before heading to L.A. in 1991, where he was asked by Sherry Lansing...

Maybe it doesn’t matter that the Oscar-nominated Women Talking won’t win Best Picture, even though it should. Nor, perhaps, does it matter that people will say that this film, about the rape of more than 100 women and girls, sounds depressing. Because even if Sarah Polley’s superlative work doesn’t get the plaudits or the audience it deserves, it should stand to have a far greater legacy. This is the kind of cinema that endures – not just as a great work of art (although it is that), but as something that moves us all forward.

Even though Samantha Stark didn’t get to interview Britney Spears personally for “Controlling Britney Spears,” she does find herself in awe of the strength that she’s displayed throughout her career. “One thing that surprised me is that people told me that she had been in control and huge contributor to her art as a teenager. When she first became big, people thought she was a puppet, but I heard from so many people that she wasn’t,” she tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Documentary panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). That strength became even more admirable as the details of Spears’s conservatorship were found out. “The question of consent comes up for me a lot, because if Britney Spears couldn’t consent to who she saw and who her friends were, how could she consent to working and signing?”

Sean Bean, Aka Ned Stark on Game Of Thrones, revealed that he’s not a fan of intimacy coordinators.
The actor argued that having coordinators around makes things feel more mechanical than emotional. “It would inhibit me more because it’s drawing attention to things,” he told The Times of London. “Somebody saying, ‘Do this, put your hands there, which you touch his thing… I think the natural way lovers behave would be ruined by someone bringing it right down to a technical exercise.”
Bean also recounted a positive experience filming a Snowpiercer intimate scene with his costar, Lena Hall. “This one had a musical cabaret background, so she was up for anything,” the English actor claimed.
Bean is (unsurprisingly) already receiving backlash for his comments.
Hall responded to her costar’s theories about her on Twitter. “Just because I am in theater… does not mean I am ‘up for anything,...

Before the Top 8 on “The Voice” perform again on Dec. 10, we asked viewers of the show who they think will win season 15. Their overwhelming pick, with a whopping 30% of the total vote, is Kennedy Holmes, who is coached by Jennifer Hudson. That would be sweet revenge for the Oscar and Grammy-winning Hudson, who did not have an artist in the top 4 in her inaugural season on the show last year.
Each of the other three coaches also has one artist that merited double digit support. Blake Shelton‘s Kirk Jay has 25% of the audience behind him; one of Kelly Clarkson‘s three remaining acts, Chevel Shepherd, registers 13% support; and Regan Strange from Team Adam Levine is at 11%; None of the other contestants in the Top 8 broke the 10% barrier and could well face elimination on Tuesday’s show hosted by Carson Daly.

Despite losing on the confirmation battle of Supreme Court Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the #MeToo movement leaders feel confident that they have won something.
Appearing on NBC’s Meet The Press, #MeToo movement leaders Alyssa Milano and Tarana Burke said the confirmation headings and Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony may broaden the movement from its focus on Hollywood.
“I think (Ford) stepping out was something that we needed to have happen in this movement,” Burke told moderator Chuck Todd. “It’s been largely focused on Hollywood and on individual bad actors. And I think her coming forward really set the stage for survivors to have a different role in this movement than we’ve seen over the last year.”
Milano said that while the political battle was lost, “I do think we are winning the cultural battle. And often, I don’t fight for the win. I’m fighting so...

There were no big reveals out of the “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” Comic-Con panel Thursday night, but it didn’t really matter to the fans, who just came to celebrate the show’s un-cancellation — and thank creators and cast for its inclusiveness.
The panel, featuring stars Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Chelsea Peretti, Dirk Blocker, Joel McKinnon Miller, co-creator/executive producer Dan Goor and executive producer Luke Del Tredici, spent some time talking about all things “Nine-Nine.” Which included the show’s revival on NBC 24 hours after being canceled on Fox, its celebrated ability to deal with sensitive subjects, and of course “title of your sex tape.”
But first the state of things. “Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ will return on NBC in the 2018-2019 mid-season. And according to Goor, they’re already “five weeks into pre-production,” and the writers’ room is up and running.

President Donald Trump, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by 19 different women, joked about #MeToo during a speech in Montana Thursday night. The remarks came during a challenge to Sen. Elizabeth Warren to prove her Native American heritage, a claim that led Trump to give her the culturally insensitive nickname “Pocahontas.” A potential rival in the 2020 election, Sen. Warren’s disputed Native American heritage has followed since her Senate bid in 2012. During his speech, Trump offered Warren $1 million towards her favorite charity if she took a DNA test “and it shows you’re an Indian.”
“I’m going to get one of those little kits and in the middle of the debate, when she proclaims she’s of Indian heritage — because her mother said she has high cheekbones, that’s her only evidence,” Trump said. “We will take that little kit, but we have to do it gently, because...

After years of exploiting his position of power at Pixar and Disney, pressure from the Me Too movement recently ousted John Lasseter from his post as chief creative officer. But Pixar has yet to address how John’s sexist attitudes permeated its culture for decades, giving men license to mistreat women and sideline their careers.
I was a graphic designer at Pixar during the second half of my 20s. I know people are saying that the climate there wasn’t “that bad.” I’m here to tell you that it was, and more than likely still is.
At Pixar, my female-ness was an undeniable impediment to my value, professional mobility, and sense of security within the company. The stress of working amidst such a blatantly sexist atmosphere took its toll, and was a major factor in forcing me out of the industry.

Cannes Lions, an event that has gathered creatives and marketers since 1954, boasts a roll call of showbiz stars, media chiefs and academics that gives it the feel of a cross of the Golden Globes, Ted Talks and Davos. But the spotlight is not on the celebrities; instead, the fest focuses on content and the cross-pollination of creativity, commerce and culture.

More than 20 years ago, Darren Star was ready to hold auditions for a new show about female friendships and sexual relationships, titled “Sex and the City.”
Star, who had come off creating “Beverly Hills, 90210″ and “Melrose Place,” needed to find his core four — the female actresses who would soon become known to the world as Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha.
Today, those four names — and the actresses who portrayed them, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon — are synonymous with one of the biggest pop culture phenomenons in TV history.
And the show still resonates today. Airing long before the Me Too era and female-forward programming, the comedy was ahead of its time, putting confidentially flawed, unapologetically single career women at the forefront of TV, exuding themes of female friendship, female empowerment and casual sex. “Sex and the City” has held onto its original fanbase and...

Former president Bill Clinton has clarified his “tone-deaf” response to the “Today” show about Monica Lewinsky in a separate interview on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on Tuesday.

But when asked by Colbert the next day if he understood why people saw that as a “tone-deaf” response in light of the #MeToo movement, Clinton clarified that he had misspoke.

During a segment of Variety‘s “Actors on Actors,” presented by Shutterstock, Laura Dern and Angela Bassett reexamined some of their early acting experiences in the wake of the Me Too movement.

AMC’s new series “Dietland” got a rewrite after the Harvey Weinstein sexual misconduct scandal captured national attention, showrunner Marti Noxon told TheWrap.
“I think that we were lucky that the story about Harvey broke when we were just location scouting, and none of the scripts had been shot yet,” Noxon said. “We did rewrite to reflect a kind of ‘post-reckoning world,” she added, saying audiences will notice the theme more “as the story progresses.”
“Dietland,” which was already about women reclaiming their power from misogynistic men and abusers, provides “the next extension of the Me Too movement,” Noxon said. “What if people took it even to the next level and went after the predators who are active today?”

Because I have worked in movies for 50 years. I’ve worked with hundreds of actresses and not a single one — big ones, famous ones, ones starting out — have ever ever suggested any kind of impropriety at all.
