Brings me back to my childhood.
wodell311 April 2021
As a Gen X'er I grew up on the Muppets, Sesame Street, the Dark Crystal, etc... A show with puppets that also gives me a D&D vibe, heck yeah keep them coming. Also as a musician I love the little songs our troll "Bard" sings in every show. Harkens back to Kermit singing in the swamp. I hope this gets renewed for many more seasons.

A clever tale of finding your passion in life
roseannday11 April 2021
This is a great addition to the Nickelodeon lineup. Kids will certainly enjoy the eccentric puppets and their sword fighting while adults will enjoy the humor. Everyone will be charmed by the shy bridge toll who burns his bridges and the princess who gives up her tiara and her ribbon cutting duties. There should be lots of fun adventures ahead as the troll and princess combine forces to help others.

DEFINITELY WORTH WATCHING!!!
iiplaygames3 April 2021
I wasn't expecting much out of this series except something to watch to entertain myself but this show right here is just...WOW. This is much to say especially due to the fact that only the first episode premiered but I definitely see some gold for this series in the future. I'll 100% be tuning in on Fridays to continue watching the series. Thank You Nickelodeon & Cast/Crew for bringing this to our screens.

A Questing Comedy
atlasmb4 May 2021
A ferocious warrior princess is accompanied by a young troll on a quest to help a wizard defeat a witch and regain his daughter. It might sound like a common theme, but this is a clever, imaginative comedy populated by puppets. Only adults will understand all the humor, which is as layered as you choose to delve into. This is a parody of adventure tropes filled with pop culture references.

Brendar is a comely lass with feltish skin. The maid marionette crosses paths with a troll who seeks a purpose, though he does like to compose and perform spontaneous ballads while playing lute. In days of yore, this was a popular way of conveying lore. They battle a skeleton crew and deal with all manner of natural and supernatural impediments.

This series will be appreciated by all pupaphiliacs. Expect anachronisms, memes, and self-referential humor. Don't worry about the gnomenclature. There's a funny crepuscular raptor, but I'll leave that for another chapter.

Why was this show sinking from it's higher rating?
derikdragon0124 April 2021
As a grownup fan of medieval fantasy and liker of the Muppets, I've really been starting to enjoy it. What with the references to properties like Willow, The Wizard of Oz, Monty Python and such, anybody old or new to the cultures should love it. So give it a second look.

Cringey yawnfest
leynir19 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I grew up with shows like Fraggle Rock, The Muppet Show and Sesame Street and still have a very soft spot for puppets.

Sadly "The Barbarian and the Troll" only manages to look great - the characters and premise are one big miss. The whole thing reminds me of the equally bad "Disenchantment", full of tired old tropes that were maybe somewhat fresh about 20 years ago.

Take a look at the main character for example: a rebellious (ex-)princess (oohhh, never seen that before!) turned barbarian, who takes herself completely serious in a show that tries its hardest to be funny and witty and fails miserably. It's cringey. Really cringey.

The troll character is a wimp who's at odds with his father (never seen that before either!) and is smitten with the barbarian at first glance. Could... we maybe stop with father-son-conflicts for a while?

My goodness, you'd think it's not THAT hard to do a decent parody but apparently it is. Shame about the puppets and nice backgrounds, both of which invoke nostalgia and for that get two stars from me.

A great intro for kids to the fantasy genre
KingAssmar17 April 2021
A very modern throwback. The humor is spot on for this time, very self referential, tongue-in-cheek, and meta as all get out. The music is infuriatingly catchy as well. Production values seem through the roof, and it shows: characters and environments are gorgeously detailed. I think the kids will love it. I got hints of The Witcher series, but focused on the bard, the music, and the humor.

Edit: They just made fun of my hometown. Had to upgrade from an LA 9 to a perfect Bakersfieldian 10.

Great show for kids and adults
layarbr24 May 2021
A great show to watch with my kids age 6 and 9. It's like the Muppets meet Shrek and maybe a little Monty Python. Great one liners, clever plot, and catchy earmarks. Glad we stumbled on this and can't wait to keep watching.

Dang funny show. Reminds me of The Muppet Show
wnpnxxj1 June 2021
My wife and I have been loving this show. Its really well written. The musical interludes really help make the show great. The sets are fantastic. The camera work is what really impressed me. What? Camera work on a puppet show? Yeah, seriously! Watch the depth of field, the focus shift, the attention to lighting. Its better show than most live-action sitcoms.

My wife loves the show, even though she once proclaimed "I hate puppets."

Watch a few episodes. It just gets better and better.

Laugh out loud classic
bsvjjddnw1 June 2021
I grew up on Fraggle Rock and Muppet Show and they keep the purest muppetry (sp?). Humor and plot is for all ages. I'm in my 40s with kindergartens and I don't miss an episodes. There is a strong female heroine and a dedication to friendship that is the example for my kids but even I am inspired (between the laughs). Thank you for something so original and nostalgically entertaining. No guilt in this pleasure.

NICE PARODY OF XENA THE WARRIOR PRINCESS
flyingmouseplus9 June 2021
Obviously based on Xena, it refers itself as a cliche. Cute characters and situations. Totally epic theme song. Totally enjoyable.

Really a suprise
beanmoment30 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Its quite a treat. It goes as far as zany puppets on meth action can go. The songs are good (I'm biased tho "It's Just Too Good" is the best song fight me). The puppets themselves are very unique and well made. The arcs are good. The ending however is underwhelming. It just ends with the tail of the demon being cut and its over. The rest of the episode is just adjusting to a new life without the queen. But i know that there was a cliffhanger at the end. And i understand that there are supposed to be 2 seasons. Well its been over a year and has not rolled around. So i doubt its never going to get a proper ending. But, please. For the love of god prove me wrong. Make this section of the review sound stupid. This is a rare case of fresh air on nickelodeon. So please, i bet of thee, make the next season happen.
