David Morley’s Mutants is a film that we’ve been following with great interest in these pages for a good while now. The young French director’s previous short film, Morsure, is a great favorite and one that proved beyond any doubt that Morley has the chops to breath new life into old concepts and that is precisely what he promised to do to the zombie film with this, his debut feature. Now, having seen the film at the market in Berlin, I’d be lying if I didn’t acknowledge that Mutants has some serious flaws but all the things that drew me to the director in the first place are certainly in effect and by simply slowing down the conversion process he has indeed breathed a whole new sense of dread into the zombie picture. And, if nothing else, he can cut one hell of a trailer.

Will Mutants director David Morley be the next big thing in the current wave of French horror? I’m not much of a betting man but I’d pretty happily put down a few bucks on the “yes” side of that wager. And here’s why:
Last year Morley turned out a little film called Morsure - that’s Bitten in English - a tight, nasty little were-beast short that ran about twenty minutes and totally kicked the audience’s butt when I screened it at the Worldwide Short Film Festival. It was a lean, vicious piece of work that looked fantastic on screen, ramped the tension up to eleven and proved beyond any doubt that Morley knew how to take a familiar concept and make it shockingly fresh again.
And here Morley is with his debut feature, Mutants. And once again he’s putting a fresh spin on a familiar genre,...
