“Space travelers in the gray mists of time? An inadmissible question to academic scientists. Anyone who asks questions like that ought to see a psychiatrist.” • Erich von Danniken
“It’s just one more thing to remember to charge throughout our busy days.” • Joseph Volpe of Engadget.com critiquing the Apple Watch
Well, I finished rewatching Ronald D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica.
The most popular question (dissatisfaction?) I remember floating around the message boards connected with the finale of BSG was: “What, or who, was the returned-from-the-dead Kara Thrace, a.k.a. Starbuck?” And I also remember that there was a lot of frustration and unhappy people who were really angry with Mr. Moore for not giving a black-and-white answer. I suppose these dissatisfied viewers wanted to see an extension of Kara’s final scene with Lee Adama in which, in their imagination, she would say – sort of a Spoiler Ahead!

Sometimes, there’s a movie project that just doesn’t go away. They rumble on in the background for decades, with concepts kept alive only by the sheer willpower of those dedicated individuals involved. Battlestar Galactica is one such project – but now, it seems like it’s one step closer to fruition as Transcendence writer Jack Paglen has been hired to deliver a script.
Created by Glen A. Larson (Knight Rider, Magnum P.I, Quincy M.E) as a science fiction TV series in 1978, Battlestar Galactica ran for one season – ending in April 1979. It featured the premise that would provide the basis for every iteration of the show that followed – that our future humanity has migrated to a distant area of the galaxy, known as the Twelve Colonies, from where they have been defending themselves against a cybernetic race known as The Cylons. During a vicious attack, human survivors flee aboard spaceships,...

La-la Land Records Re-engages In The Cylon Wars With Two New Soundtracks Composed By Bear McCreary Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome on March 12th
Caprica: Original Television Soundtrack in April
La-La Land Records announces the release of two new soundtracks Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome on March 12th and Caprica: Original Television Soundtrack in April. Bear McCreary (The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica) composed the music for both series.
“In scoring the Battlestar Galactica prequels Caprica and Blood & Chrome, I returned to the unique combination of world and orchestral sounds that defined my previous score,” McCreary described. “But, both prequels had their own distinct approach. Caprica was interlaced with delicate chamber orchestra textures, solo harp and other-worldly source songs. Blood & Chrome is energized by heavy distorted-synthesizers and searing electric guitar performances. Listeners will hear, however, that all three series have a common musical DNA.”

SyFy's most recent Battlestar Galactica companion, Blood and Chrome, recently completed its ten episode run on the Machinima Prime YouTube Original Channel. Whether you believe Blood and Chrome could become its own series or if you found it to be underwhelming, it's notable that SyFy chose to release the feature in twelve minute web installments rather than one feature-length TV movie, as the channel had done with previous BSG properties. Was the web series route the correct path for Blood and Chrome, or would it have been better suited for TV? Just for kicks, let's compare it to The Plan, a BSG TV movie first shown on TV in 2010. The Plan was penned by Husbands writer Jane Espenson, so in a slightly different alternate universe it could have seen online release. As it was, The Plan hit SyFy in January 2010, and while its ratings are weirdly difficult to find, the...

Well, holy frak. The sequel has a release date.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Blood and Chrome will be released online on Machinima Prime's YouTube Channel in ten 7-12-minute installments starting this Friday, November 9.
The full two-hour pilot will air on Syfy early next year, and an unrated version will be released on home video some time after that.
Refresher course from EW (because it's been a while):
For those who haven’t followed the B&C saga, the project was originally developed as a series for Syfy following the conclusion of the critically beloved Battlestar Galactica reboot and its movie spin-offs The Plan and Razor. BSG vets David Eick and Michael Taylor are executive producers, with Taylor writing the script from a story by Eick, Bradley Thompson and David Weddle. Jonas Pate (Caprica) directed.
The prequel follows young William Adama (Luke Pasqualino, UK’s Skins) during the first Cylon War.

Chicago – The high-def releases for “Battlestar Galactica” have been somewhat baffling. The problem for Universal was that A.) They had started releasing the series on standard-def when Blu-ray took off and B.) They needed a way to milk one of their most impressive cash cows for a bit longer. Consequently, the chance to individually buy all of one of the best science fiction programs of all time didn’t come until 2011. But that day has finally arrived with the release of the impressive “Battlestar Galactica: Season Four.”
Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
Stick with me here. It’s going to get complicated. Technically, the entire run of “Battlestar Galactica” was available in July of 2009 but only in an expensive complete series set (currently running over $200). If you had a few seasons on standard that you were fine merely upconverting, you still had to open the wallet for the full series.

"If you only watched Human Target broadcasting on Fox, who knows what you heard? Because the compression can be really weird"
As if composer Bear McCreary's cult credentials weren't impeccable enough, with acclaimed and commercially successful releases and performances of his music for Battlestar Galactica, he's also provided the soundtrack to the likes of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, looming AMC creep-fest The Walking Dead and Fox's Human Target, the soundtrack of which is currently on release...
What can you tell us about Human Target itself and how you became involved with it?

With only 10 days left before Caprica returns, different news bits are coming in from different places and hopefully there will be more of them in the next couple of weeks. Syfy has sent out screeners for episodes 1x10, "Unvanquished," and 1x11, "Retribution," to a bunch of TV bloggers and journalists, so we'll probably be seeing some reviews soon enough. Until then, here is another quick round of updates:
Michael Hinman (Airlock Alpha) has tweeted the writing and directing credits for the next two episodes. "Unvanquished" was written by Ryan Mottesheard and directed by Eric Stoltz, and "Retribution" was written by Patrick Massett and John Zinman (who had previously written the episode that introduced Vergis, "Know Thy Enemy") and directed by Jonas Pate.
Doug Drexler (CGI supervisor) has posted the Caprica 2010 Emmy Presentation Book over at Drex Files.
Some cast updates:
Sasha Roiz tweeted that he is currently filming an episode of House.

"Battlestar Galactica" aired its final episode more than a year ago, but the story of Admiral William Adama isn't over yet.
In an interview with Screen Junkies, leading man Edward James Olmos — who played Adama and directed numerous episodes of the series, including the telemovie "The Plan" — revealed that he's currently working on a "Battlestar Galactica" sequel in comic book form.
"I'm going to go there. I'm going to go there in a graphic novel," he said. "Pretty soon I hope. I don't know. It just depends on whether people can get behind it and understand it for what it is. I think people will."
Olmos, next seen opposite Seth Rogen in "The Green Hornet," wants to find out what happened to Admiral Adama after he settled on Earth.

"Battlestar Galactica" is going to have a prequel movie. No, not "The Plan," this is going to feature a young William Adama. No no, not "Caprica," we mean Bill Adama during the first Cylon war. Ok no, not "Razor" either. I know that had young Adama during the first Cylon war for a few minutes, but this is totally different. This is going to be a web series flashback. No! I know they had multiple webisode flashback series, but those were only like 20 minutes per series, this is going to be 90 minutes! Totally different.
Michael Taylor is set to produce the series, and he did co-produce about half of the Ron Moore run, so it's not exactly in inexperienced hands. Interestingly, if you search on IMDb for Michael Taylor, you get 42 results, so the man might be the answer to life the universe and everything, at least in the context of the Battlestar universe.

We’re big fans of the recent update of the Battlestar Galactica series.
The epic search for Earth and identity spread over five seasons was an amazing piece of television and looks simply incredible on Blu-ray and DVD.
The entire run of BSG is out on Blu-ray and DVD will be out in the UK on the 10th of May and we’ve got three copies of this prequel to the series to give away.
Here’s the official synopsis of The Plan,
This two hour long Sci Fi Channel feature film is set in the reimagined version of the Battlestar Galactica fictional universe. The prequel to the series begins before the attack on the 12 colonies and consists of newly filmed material and a compilation of clips from the TV series and mini-series.

Lots to watch out for in May. Iron Man 2 is already tearing up the box office in the UK, with its Us roll-out coming on May 7th. Conversely, we get the terrible remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street on the 7th, which the Us got last week.

After four seasons of fracktastic carnage, torrid affairs and Final Cylon clues, the phenomenal Battlestar Galactica reimagining left our screens last March in a haze of cryptic glory. But what has become of the actors who portrayed the memorable bunch of frack-ups, alchies and traitors on board the legendary vessel? Edward James Olmos The end of BSG didn't mean that William Adama had said his last 'so say we all'. Olmos reprised the role in prequel 'The Plan', which he also directed. It's been forever since I've opened up the Airlock Alpha mailbag, and there's definitely a lot of fun and interesting things on readers' minds. So the wait is finally over. Let's answer our first batch of e-mail for 2010! I had a quick question. Does anyone have any idea what the ratings for 'Battlestar Galactica: The Plan' were? I am someone who follows sci-fi television shows, but I have a keen interest in the business, and know things like ratings and DVD sales, and key target demos make these shows possible. We both know that in all likelihood, the poor live ratings killed 'Battlestar Galactica,' 'Dollhouse' and 'Jericho,' and while BSG was able to be all tied up, it ended before its time. -- Aaron Well, just to be clear first off. Ratings did not kill "Battlestar Galactica." ...

How can Caprica possibly succeed? It is a prequel to a remake to a rip-off. Of course, that remake, the updated Battlestar Galactica, was actually one of the greatest TV shows ever, but that only indicates just how impossible Caprica's task really is. The new BSG was great precisely because it literally destroyed everything Caprica is. The original 2003 miniseries introduced us to the kind of science-fiction space culture we all got bored with somewhere between Star Trek: Voyager and Stargate: Atlantis. The fact that most of the main cast was in the military recalled everything from the Federation to...

Woooooooo! The Ravens won! Although that game also showcased why I get so frustrated with the Ravens sometimes; that first quarter where we scored three touchdowns and a field goal was absolutely magical. If we could play like that consistently I might think we had a real shot of getting to the Superbowl. Alas, as the other three quarters of the game proved, you can't really count on that sort of playing with the Ravens. You can, however, count on stupid celebration dances. Yeah, I said it. I don't get any football celebration dances though. They're all "yeah, I caught the ball!" or "yeah, I tackled that guy!" and I'm like "that's your Job, dingus. And you get paid ridiculously well to do it, so stop strutting like a jackass." Anyway, I will likely be spending my evening trying to figure out whether or not my house has heat in...

This Sunday, SyFy airs Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, the prequelish movie chronicling what those pesky Toasters were doing while the fleet jumped from one divinely ordain misadventure after another. But is it any good?
Seems strange to ask that about BSG, but after the last hour of the show, some do wonder if it's worth investing any more of their precious time on the voyages of the starship Galactica. (I'm of the position that Caprica is going to be fun, but that's another post.)
I think it's best to be a completist about these things. I was there from those first trepidation filled moments of the miniseries to the last light of the little dancing Sony robot intoning our oncoming cyber doom. So I'll watch it, even though the reviews aren't all that great.
Source: Should you 'Plan' to watch the new 'Battlestar Galactica' movie?...

The use of "previouslies" has gotten pretty common in television. With the rise of serialized shows, even the most hardcore fan of a particular program might forget details that affect ongoing story lines. Hence many dramas begin with a "previously on ['Show X']" segment, which toward the end of a meaty season, can become almost comical in length. The standalone TV movie "Battlestar Galactica: The Plan," which airs on Syfy Sunday, feels like a two-hour "previously on 'Battlestar Galactica.'" The best "Battlestar" extras -- the TV movie "Razor" and the "Face of the Enemy" Webisodes -- focused tightly on interesting...

Syfy is giving its fans an early Christmas present: An extended version of the pilot episode for "Caprica" is available online, more than a month before the series officially premieres.
The cable channel has already released the "Battlestar Galactica" prequel's pilot on DVD, way back in April. Those who didn't pony up the money for it then can now see what they missed, along with some extra footage that probably won't make it into the first hour of the Jan. 22 premiere (the cut online runs about 52 minutes, a good deal longer than the 42-44 minutes for a typical episode of an ad-supported show).
"Caprica" is set 58 years before the events of "Battlestar" ("before the fall," as the show puts it) and will focus primarily on two families, the wealthy and powerful Graystones and the Adamas, an immigrant family from one of the other 12 colonies. Eric Stoltz stars as Daniel Graystone,...

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. “The Cylons were created by man. They evolved. They rebelled. There are twelve Cylon models. And they have a plan…”
Just what the hell that plan was has been obscure to even the most hardy BSG fan since the series began. Finally, even after the finale of the series, we are fortunate to be handed down a new testament of the Cylons and their, ahem, machinations.
To describe what The Plan is – that is, what this new feature is – is difficult. Rather complex in narrative construction (loyal viewers of the show would expect no less), The Plan follows the chronology of the series from the miniseries, through near the end of season two. Told from the Cylons point-of-view, we are finally treated to secrets and given new insight into what makes the Toasters tick, as both an entire race and as individual characters.
Ultimately, in both plot and theme,...

As I wrote in yesterday's mini-blog, we watched two films last night. I watched Scream Blacula Scream on my own as Jon was napping. Each film was a treat for vastly different reasons. The first was The Naked Monster, a loving send up of B monster films from the 50s and 60s. It makes very clever use of existing footage and casting of actors from those films (The Thing from Another World, War of the Worlds, and This Island Earth for example). In many cases, these were the last roles for those iconic actors. They all seemed to be having a great time, so we had a great time watching them. There were even a couple of bits with the wonderful Forrest J. Ackerman whom I had the pleasure of meeting more than once. We've toured his amazing home and had...

If you're a Battlestar Galactica fans still mourning the loss of the groundbreaking sci-fi series, and you just can't hold out until Caprica arrives on Syfy, then by all means run out now and buy Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, the new direct-to-dvd out now from Universal Home Entertainment. The film, directed by Edward James Olmos, features much of the show's cast and sheds some light on dangling threads from the late, great series, specifically the opening comments about the Cylons and their ominous plan. What was the plan? Well, it was to infiltrate humanity, in the process wiping out mankind on Caprica and aboard Galactica. The action shifts back and forth in time and place, with John Cavil (Dean Stockwell) -- a/k/a Brother John, a/k/a Cylon model Number One -- the central figure. Cavil hates every last human and sets in motion the events that ultimately...

As you probably know, the new Battlestar Galactica: The Plan movie dropped on DVD yesterday. Its a pretty good bit of entertainment (with just a couple issues) but all in all, its worth your time and money. Plus, according to Edward James Olmos, if this movie does well, we may end up with some more movies based on this franchise — which is a good thing.
So, to help those of you still on the fence about purchasing the movie on DVD or Blu-ray, we’re bringing you a lot of clips and other bits from it to hopefully help you make the right decision. These clips show a whole bunch of action from the movie itself as well as some interviews and behind the scenes info as well.
There’s quite a few of them so sit back, relax and take a few minutes to expolore the world of BSG: The Plan.

Humans, to John Cavil (Dean Stockwell), are just a bunch of cockroaches waiting to be squashed and if he -- or better phrased it -- has his way, mankind will be crushed by their very own creation, the Cylons. Cavil, of course, is a Cylon, and fans of Battlestar Galactica glimpsed the always-sardonic Cavil and several other Cavil models in action over the course of a dozen-plus episodes of the show. Now, the Cavils are back in the new direct-to-dvd movie Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, which fills in the blanks about the Cylons' infamous plot and reveals the hows/whats/whys of several popular characters' disturbing actions. In fact, two of the Cavils -- John and Brother Cavil -- are the central figures in The Plan, which stars Dean Stockwell as the Cavils, was directed by former Battlestar Galactica regular Edward James Olmos, and is out Oct. 27 on DVD. The...

An "outwardly angelic little girl" gets adopted by a new family consisting of Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga, and then begins to unleash her hidden evilness. It's pretty slim pickings this week on DVD as there are only a few noteworthy releases, and fewer still that are even remotely related to Halloween. If you want horror, the only major releases available are the middling summer thriller Orphan, a collection of creepy animated shorts called Fear(s) of the Dark, and... the direct-to-dvd spoof Stan Helsing. Ugh. Other new releases include Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Woody Allen's Whatever Works starring Larry David, and the final (?) Battlestar Galactica Dtv feature, The Plan. The only thing that salvages the week is the long awaited release of Fred Dekker's cult classic Night of the Creeps on both DVD and Blu-ray! Definitely well worth checking out if you haven't seen it before. Will you be picking anything up this week? Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) Orphan [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) Whatever Works [5] (DVD, Blu-ray [6]) Nothing Like the Holidays [7] (DVD,...

Welcome to the DVD & Games Forecast for October 27, 2009. It's sort of a thin week all the way around, but the highlights are worthwhile, and so let's do this as quickly and efficiently as we can, since I just realized that I'm pretty much in motion and running around from now until Saturday morning without stop. Before I begin this review I have to disclose that I’m a huge fan of Ron Moore and David Eick’s re-imagined Battlestar Galactica tv series. From the first moments I saw it I was hooked and I followed the show religiously through its entire run. To this day I regard it as one of the finest shows ever to grace the small screen. In fact, I liked it so much I even got the entire series on Blu-ray. Yes, I’m the one.
So, when it came time to watch and review the latest Battlestar Galactica movie The Plan, I went into it with high expectations but was wondering how they were going to pull off this movie and tell this very well-known story from a completely different perspective: that of the Cylons. Fifteen years ago I was planning my nights around episodes of "Mystery Science Theater," programming math cheats into my graphing calculator and filming "60 Minutes"-style interviews with Cobra Commander. I was also madly in love with director Roland Emmerich's "Stargate," the German filmmaker's bold sci-fi experiment in 1994 that foreshadowed his big-budget juggernaut "Independence Day" only two years later. "Stargate" is now bowing on Blu-ray as a "15th Anniversary Edition," and it's one of a handful of notable releases during an otherwise forgettable DVD week.
"Stargate" finds Kurt Russell as a suicidal, no-nonsense military officer tasked to lead a group of battle-hardened veterans -- and soft-skinned ninny scientist James Spader -- through a newly discovered wormhole to an unknown destination. The other side winds up being a sandy desert planet whose native inhabitants have kept their human slaves in bondage under the guise of ancient Egypt. It was a wholly original concept,...

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs Ugh, I did not like this movie and, like the sequels to Shrek, will never be returning to watch it. There must come a point during the writers' meetings where the inevitable poop or sex joke enters the dialogue and people snicker and laugh, and perhaps even the whole room begins rolling and shouting between breaths, "That's great! Keep that in there." Then the movie gets made and animated little characters are regurgitating these lines and unless you have the mental capacity of a 12-year-old or are so easily amused all it takes is a poop joke to get you to laugh you sit and stare in bewilderment, unimpressed and shocked this is the best they can come up with. Not only doing "Two and a Half Men" a favor with her guest appearance, Tricia Helfer also minimizes her clothes for the stint. The fembot of "Battlestar Galactica" will play a sexy role on the half-hour comedy and the pictures from the November 16 episode have been released.
In "The Moustache Attachment", Chelsea (Jennifer Taylor) invites her beautiful college roommate, Gail (Helfer) to stay at the house while she gets over a bad breakup. True to his nature, Charlie dreams of threesomes.
Tricia Helfer played Number Six on "Battlestar Galactica" before the show came to an end earlier this year. She also participates in the short movie "Battlestar Galactica: The Plan" which is released on DVDs today (October 27). She can next be seen on "Human Target" which is premiering on Fox January 17, playing a woman in grave danger Stephanie Dobbs.
