One of the best things about independent films is that they are made by filmmakers who have complete creative freedom and do not have to worry about pleasing producers or studio executives. The results are therefore often not only unique and original, but also honest and heartfelt. Make-Out With Violence is one such film. Created by the Deagol Brothers using their limited budget but boundless imagination, the film is indeed unique, original, honest and heartfelt. It is the summer after high school graduation for a group of close friends. One member of the group, the beautiful Wendy, has disappeared. The body has not been found, but after an extensive search, she is presumed dead. A special service (i.e. 'a funeral without the body') was held for...

The Deagol Brothers are still seeking U.S. distro for their bizarre indie zombie film that played at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival. Below you'll find the latest piece of Afm art for Make-Out with Violence, an undead romance starring Eric Lehning, Cody DeVos, Leah High, Brett Miller, Tia Shearer, and Jordan Lehning. "The film tells the story of twin brothers Patrick and Carol Darling, newly graduated from high school and struggling to come to terms with the mysterious disappearance of their friend, the bright and beautiful Wendy Hearst. When a drive through the countryside surrounding their posh suburban community leads to the discovery of Wendy's mysteriously animated corpse, the boys secretly transport the zombie Wendy to an empty house in hopes of somehow bringing her back to life. As the sweltering summer pushes on, they must maintain the appearance of normalcy for their friends and family as they search for.

1Up is a new microcinema based in Perth, Australia that is launching with a very ambitious slate of screenings this summer. So far, they’ve released their full schedule for the months of June and July that includes a film almost every night of the week, and sometimes two films.
These are movies that have played on the international festival circuit, but many have not been released yet. So this is a rare treat to still see many of them still in a theater setting, even a 20-seat microcinema like 1Up.
The summer screening series kicks off with one of the best films to come out of Australia in recent years: Stuart Simpson’s vicious throwback to ’60s B-movie madness, El Monstro Del Mar, which was reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film last year.
Other movies that 1Up will be screening include such festival hits such as Best Worst Movie,...

Chris Doyle and Andy Duensing (a.k.a. The Deagol Brothers) fall into common low-budget indie-filmmaker traps with their debut feature, Make-Out With Violence. The cast tries to mask their amateur status by underacting, which makes them look like they have only a passing acquaintance with how actual human beings behave. The Deagols use familiar, close-to-home locations, but strip them to just a few kitschy props, so they come off like something out of a cheap B-movie. And the movie doesn’t have a strong script so much as a handful of vivid scenes, strung together with establishing shots, inserts ...

I remember hearing a lot of positive buzz about the Deagol brothers’ Make-Out with Violence during the 2009 South by Southwest Film Festival, but I was never able to catch any of the screenings. Eighteen months later, after all but forgetting the film ever existed, I receive a review copy of the DVD release from Factory 25. Other than hearing people rant and rave about it, I knew very little about the plot of the Make-Out with Violence. I have not read any reviews -- so I have no idea how other critics feel about it -- and to be perfectly honest, I think my naïveté probably made my viewing experience a lot more enjoyable. So, I guess what I am trying to get at is: read on at your own damn risk...besides, what the hell do critics know anyway?!

There's always that moment in zombie movies where one of the protagonists gets infected and his loved ones have to deal with the fact that someone they loved dearly is suddenly wants to eat their brains. But that's all it usually is, a moment. Then the heroes have to either man up and kill them or get eaten themselves. Festival circuit favorite "Make-Out With Violence," is like a 100-minute exploration of that moment. This is a zombie film turned inside out. Instead of following the typical arc of illness, epidemic, survival it uses that idea of someone coming back to life to tell a powerful story about loss and denial. You've never seen a zombie movie quite like this.

Make-Out with Violence is a beautifully shot indie film that mixes genres, a little too much actually. It’s not quite sure if it wants to be a coming of age/love story or horror film. If it would have blended the more morbid aspects of the film a little better this would be a very solid and interesting film. It is most concentrated on the love story aspect. Although, this works it makes it seem like an unbalanced film since a young teenage murder is really what sets everything in to motion.

What's that shambling over the curb toward the local theater? No, behind the vampires. Could it be a stampede of the undead about to take over Hollywood?
AMC's new drama series "The Walking Dead" debuts on Halloween, and more than a half-dozen zombie-related feature projects are on their way to theaters -- including Friday's "Resident Evil: Afterlife" -- or in development at the studios. With this many flesh-rotting grave-jumpers on tap, could zombies be making a run -- or, perhaps, a very slow, clumsy walk -- at the pop culture crown?
"Zombie movies, much like zombies, could become this horde that just marches across the world," said Rhett Reese, who co-wrote last year's breakout hit "Zombieland" with Paul Wernick.
The movie, TV and publishing industries have been feasting on vampires for material the past few years. But like every profitable trend, the obsession with bloodsuckers must eventually head back into...

Last March the Deagol brothers impressed SXSW audiences with their indie coming-of-age zombie flick Make-out With Violence, which at the time had only released one image. 9 months later, the official website has finally been updated with a slew of new pics and other goodies. Indie movie lovers of the greater Los Angeles area, take note of a wonderful gem from this year's SXSW festival that's coming your way. Make-Out with Violence is an angsty teenage zombie horror comedy that I caught last year at the Oxford Film Festival, and tonight - November 12 - it screens in Los Angeles. For free!
Ok, technically it's screening in Alhambra. But this one-night only engagement will likely be your only chance to see the underappreciated indie film that our own Scott Weinberg called "pretty damn good" - and if I may add my own endorsement, Make-Out with Violence is original and gorgeously shot, a great alternative to mainstream (i.e. made with way more money) films about either teenage life or zombies. The best part? Make-Out with Violence is about both of those things. (It's also got the most attractive zombie hottie of the year, with apologies to Zombieland's Amber Heard.

I don't know how many of you remember my Nashville Film Festival coverage from early in 2009, but the narrative feature winner was a local zombie picture called Make-Out with Violence. Referring to it as a 'local picture' doesn't do its justice because it definitely looks like there was a budget... even if there wasn't. Referring to it as a 'zombie picture' doesn't do it justice because it's definitely its own thing. Being your own thing is a neat trick that too few movies perform.
It's a head scratcher that some smaller distributor hasn't, uh, bitten (sorry) given the built-in audience for genre movies, the festival awards its managed (not just Nashville) and the good chance that it would win enthusiastic reviews. Plus there's the possibility that The Deagol Brothers who made it are the next Coens or Wachowskis or Polishes (remember them? They got a few idiosyncratic features released. Different...

Back in March of 2009 I reviewed a little indie horror film playing at SXSW called Make-out With Violence. What resulted for me was an instant crush for this awesome zombie flick/love story. I felt this movie, made out of Nashville, Tennessee was one of the most original zombie flicks I’d seen in years and needed to get a chance. Well, for those in the Los Angeles area, this is it!
Please, if you’re in the area and you can make it out, take the time to give this film a chance. Below is a direct invitation from the Deagol Brothers, directors of Make-out With Violence…

A lawn sprinkler, gushing out images in an uneven stream that gradually soaked me.
Make-Out with Violence defies easy categorization. Sometimes it’s at war with itself, as though it doesn’t quite know what it wants to be, as though it were made up as it went along. At other times it calms down and plays out like a gloriously trashy, minor-key Eurocult sensation. Sometimes it’s an ordinary, quiet teen drama. And always there is the ever-present soundtrack, jammed full of songs, sometimes enhancing, sometimes overpowering the action.
A young boy’s narration, like a sweeter, sadder version of Linda Manz’ sing-song in Days of Heaven.

In a way, this all started back in high school, in an art classroom, painters-turned-filmmakers Andy Duensing and Chris Doyle meeting there. Better known now as the pair behind the collective the Deagol Bros., Andy and Chris, working with longtime friends and fellow artist-musicians Eric and Jordan Lehning, have spent from production to final cut the last five years of their lives making the at turns poignant and goofball, genre-defying coming-of-age indie Make-Out with Violence. As chronicled in journalist Jim Ridley’s feature story for ...

Words and performance on the event horizon of a blackhole. That was the first few minutes, a whirlwind which traded places with something more cohesive, an ingenious little introduction (which involved odd little flashbacks) for each character and a taste of the rich white middle-American apple pie. And for all it's taste and inward teen deviance (or normality?), Make-Out With Violence is a great story which unfortunately holds a void I can't quite put my finger on. Is it the lack of proper character emoting? Was it something more twisted I desired? I'm still not sure, but I do know one thing: The Deagol brothers are definitely a pair to watch.

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.
From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.
For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.
I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..
Lineup after the break.

While this may sound a bit like Deadgirl, it's anything but. Having premiered way back in April of 2008, it's still running the fest circuit which is how I found it. The Sf Indiefest says this "recalls the early work of Wes Anderson and Sofia Coppola". Wow, that's a tall order, but I do get a bit of the macabre ala Virgin Suicides.
