Sometimes films just don't need to be 3 hours

The film follows two perspectives, but one is way more interesting and compelling than the other, which often times felt like a chore to watch. Not adding much tension or anything, except gratuitous violence and a disturbing after taste. How many sex scenes do you really need for them to loose all meaning and become tacky add-ons? How many times do you need to be reminded that the weird pervert is a weird pervert?

Where did the cleverness of the beginning go, where was the buildup? The boat scene for instance, was properly scary, you felt like you got a glimpse into this broken man's psyche, without the need to repeat it two more times. However, it felt like we spent 10 years in the stupid hotel room, it dragged the whole thing down. The film picks up the pace only almost 2 hours in, take of that what you will.

It could've been a great film if you cut down all the fat, I really liked the cinematography and the way it portrayed the main character's tension and emotions. The quiet moments in the middle between the main character and his sister were done masterfully. It feels like the summary did more work for the movie than the movie did for itself.
