Peter and his neighbor friend Barry Watkins (Ronny Graham) return from a boat buying trip with a beat-up antique 1928 Duesenberg instead. Mary and Gloria Watkins (Sarah Marshall) are even more frustrated when they boys ignore them in favor of working on the car. They make them take them to the country club dance, but while waiting on the girls at the last minute they go back under the car to work. The men restore the car and make it up to the girls by promising to take them to Lake Placid. However, they receive a letter saying their membership into the Classic Cars of America has been approved, and a notice of the annual race from Yonkers to Bridgeport is on the same week of the planned the trip. They decide to make the route to Lake Placid though Bridgeport with the girls not knowing they're in a race. It all goes to plan until they encounter unexpected complications along the way.
