We meet Elisabeth Moss’ Portia in the first scene of FX’s new Hulu drama The Veil, striding confidently through a busy international airport, stiletto heels precariously high, her mouth a gash of crimson lipstick. She’s meeting a shady businessman named Tomas, and they toast to a transaction successfully made. But several seconds later, Interpol rushes in and she chides Tomas for all the criminal details he spilled in the previous 37 days. She walks away, leaving him fuming and in custody.
Her name isn’t actually Portia. As she leaves, aspect and tone instantly changed, she’s already arranging her next destination — Istanbul — and her next identity, telling a person on the telephone, “I would like my name to be Imogen.” She will be Imogen for the rest of The Veil.
It’s here, two minutes into the show, that eagle-eyed viewers and English majors should already be putting together certain pieces.

Sarah Rice, who performed the pivotal role of the endangered Johanna in the original Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, died Saturday of cancer. She was 68.
Her death was announced in an Instagram post by her friend and fellow performer Rebecca Caine, who remembered Rice for her love of animals. “May you be greeted by every animal you ever loved on the other side and may green finch and linnet birds sing you to your rest,” wrote Caine, referring to the Sweeney number “Green Finch & Linnet Bird” performed by the Johanna character.
Rice, whose Sweeney role in 1979 was her first and only Broadway performance, revisited her signature song just two years ago at the Sondheim Unplugged concert staged at New York’s 54 Below.

Back in its heyday, How To Get Away With Murder was one of the hottest shows on television.
Thursday nights on ABC were once the night that Shonda Rhimes built from start to finish, with Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and the aforementioned legal drama setting the interwebs on fire every week.
The series was a bonafide hit from the start and constantly had social media ablaze as viewers were thrust into murderous coverups and shocking twists every season.
It’s been over three years since the series signed off, and while we’re still reliving all the bloody mayhem during our various rewatches, the cast has moved on to other projects. And what projects might those be? Let’s look at what the cast of How To Get Away With Murder is doing now!

Sir Patrick Stewart's career has included plenty of high points, but the actor will always be most known as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. As the captain of the first crew to land their own TV show after the original run of "Star Trek," Stewart's character had plenty to prove to audiences worldwide. He did so admirably across an impressive run that ended up including seven seasons of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," three seasons of "Star Trek: Picard," and four feature films.
With decades of retrospect, Stewart's time on "Star Trek" seems like a no-brainer; the Shakespearean actor led a new crew with a cerebral thoughtfulness that countered Captain Kirk's heart-first leadership style, and he's still remembered by many fans as the best character to ever captain a Trek ship. Yet according to Stewart's new memoir, "Making It So," Stewart had reservations about taking the role in the...

Underscoring a renaissance on Spain’s genre scene, a duo of titles – Daniel Calparsoro’s “All the Names of God” and Carlota Pereda’s “The Chapel” – lead the lineup of the second Spanish Screenings on Tour, which unspools at Rome’s Mia forum, taking place Oct. 9-13.
A platform of market premieres, projects, pics in post and potential remake titles, the Spanish Screenings also underscore the ever stronger emergence in Spain of open arthouse titles – Isaki Lacuesta’s “Saturn Return,” Arantxa Echeverría “Chinas,” Benito Zambrano’s “Jumping the Fence” and Gerardo Herrero’s “Under Therapy,” which was one of the best-selling titles at March’s Malaga Spanish Screenings.
With titles in Next from Spain set to present trailers, Spanish Screenings on Tour will also position a bevy of anticipated feature debuts, at different stages of production, from Spain’s seemingly bottomless well of new talent, such as Jaume Claret Muxart.

With just a single, relaxed, behind-the-scenes pic posted on Instagram by Anthony Mackie, everything changes for Captain America’s next big-screen MCU outing. Formerly known as New World Order, the fourth Cap movie will now proudly bear the title Brave New World, as shown on the back of the chairs in Mackie’s on-set snap. At first glance it’s a superficial change, but it’s probably a sensible idea to move away from a phrase thrown around by George Bush Sr in the ‘90s and embrace something a little more Shakespearean.
‘O brave new world, that has such people in’t.’ So says Miranda in The Tempest. She was, obviously enough, not talking about the cast of Cap 4, but if she had been, she wouldn’t have been wrong. As Mackie’s photo attests, the film includes the not inconsiderable presence of Harrison Ford as General Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross...

Exclusive: The BBC will today begin work to restore a controversial sculpture outside of its London headquarters after it was vandalized by a hammer-wielding protester last year.
The 91-year-old Eric Gill artwork that adorns Broadcasting House depicts Prospero and Ariel from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, but it was attacked last year amid calls for it to be removed.
Campaigners demanded action after extracts from Gill’s private diaries, published nearly half a century after his death in 1940, revealed that he sexually abused his daughters.
The BBC declined to cave to the demands, saying it was right to have debates about whether works of art can be divorced from their creators.
It has now begun repair work, which will likely cost between £10,000 and £20,000. It will be funded by insurance, rather than through the license fee.

Salem, Massachusetts brews up more Halloween activities than you can shake a broom at each October, so it was logical for Salem Horror Fest to take place during the spookiest month of the year. For its sixth installment, however, the festivities have moved to the spring, making it much easier to attend without throngs of tourists.
If last night’s opening night ceremony — headlined by a screening of Candyman with Tony Todd in attendance — is any indication, horror lovers will show up any time of the year. Held at the Peabody Essex Museum, the event kicked off with poignagnt opening remarks by festival director Kay Lynch. She briefly outlined the evolution of Salem Horror, which was born out of her desire for catharsis after the 2016 election.

April is the cruelest month, but evidently not for one-man shows starring Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes.
The “Schindler’s List” and “Harry Potter” star’s sister Sophie Fiennes directs a film version of “T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets,” the stage production he brought to London and throughout the UK back in 2021. During the lockdown, Fiennes committed to memory the “Wasteland” poet’s four epic poems written during World War II about man’s relationship to time and the divine. His performance, praised as “magnetic” by The Telegraph, was filmed at the end of his run.
IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer for the film version, opening April 28 at the IFC Center in New York City, courtesy of Kino Lorber. An expansion in theaters nationally will follow.
Fiennes’ filmed performance of Eliot’s masterworks is a co-production between The Bath Theatre Royal and Royal & Derngate, Northampton and Lone Star Productions, Amoeba Film and Lonely Dragon Films.

Cocaine Bear is directed by Elizabeth Banks, with an ensemble cast that includes Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Christian Convery-Jennings and Alden Ehrenreich.
A movie that starts off with a comic bump and cites Wikipedia as a source can’t be bad, can it?
If you take it seriously, it’s a B-movie with little plot and a series of “well-worn” jokes that are probably funnier after you’ve had two or three whiskeys or your favorite substance.
If you don’t take it seriously: it’s an eighties revival that’s lot of fun and is done with period effects.
Very funny.
Plot (to call it something)
A guy throws some packets of cocaine out of a plane, which end up in the paws of a bear, which dances furiously in a park that is similar to Yellowstone – but with an entirely different Yogi there…

Warning: contains spoilers for Endeavour Series 9 Episode 3 ‘Exeunt’.
For the most part, the Endeavour finale kept its feet on the ground and provided answers to long-held fan questions. One scene however, set a new mystery. Why, between saying goodbye to Fred in Radcliffe Square and attending his choir’s Blenheim Palace rehearsal, does Endeavour go alone to a churchyard and fire a gun?
It’s not just any gun, but Fred Thursday’s Webley service revolver, a war memento that’s made various appearances in Endeavour since Series 1, and most recently used in a shoot-out with Di Lott’s goons. Fred didn’t pack it for the removal men with the rest of his belongings, and has it with him when he and Endeavour say an emotional goodbye. “Why don’t you take this,” he asks. “You might need it, if you’re staying.”
Endeavour nods and places the gun...

Warning: contains spoilers for the Endeavour Series 9 finale ‘Exeunt’.
With funereal imagery and talk of death, the Endeavour finale presaged tragedy, but then took its leave with merciful care. Its characters were dispatched like a fond parent putting to bed a favourite child. All survived, and went away with assurances to us about their futures. Bright, DeBryn, Miss Frazil, Jim, Jakes, and the Thursdays were generously waved off into the sunshine in an emotional ending.
All survived. But did they? The one character we knew had to live past the finale’s credits was, in a cryptic way that befits this playful series, perhaps its sole victim. This whole time, we’ve been clocking up the many and frequent portents of Fred’s death, forgetting that this ending was always destined to symbolically kill off somebody else – Endeavour, to leave behind Morse. Just Morse. That was perhaps the significance of the gunshot in the churchyard,...

Jeremy Clarkson is in hot water again, following a terse exchange on his show Clarkson’s Farm, in which he told a dyslexic barrister to “learn to spell”.
Charles Streeten said that the former Top Gear host’s mocking comments about his spelling during an episode of the Amazon Prime show had forced him to relive his difficult childhood.
Streeten was representing the local council against Clarkson over planning permission to extend his farm in Oxfordshire in the second series of the programme.
During the episode, while walking out of the planning meeting, Clarkson told Streeten he should “learn to spell”.
Streeten subsequently published an open letter to Clarkson, revealing his learning difficulties and explaining they had not affected his career as a barrister, later adding that he had not expected the remark to be televised.

February, marking both Black History Month and Valentine’s Day, is the kind of stretch from which a programmer can mine plenty. Accordingly the Criterion Channel have oriented their next slate around both. The former is mostly noted in a series comprising numerous features and shorts: Shirley Clarke and William Greaves up to Ephraim Asili and Garrett Bradley, among them gems such as Varda’s Black Panthers and Kathleen Collins’ Losing Ground; a six-film series on James Baldwin; and 10 works by Oscar Micheaux.
Meanwhile, the 23-film “All You Need Is Love” will cover the blinding romance of L’Atalante, the heartbreak of Happy Together, and youthful whimsy of Stolen Kisses; four Douglas Sirk rarities should leave their mark, but I’m perhaps most excited about three starring Rock Hudson and Doris Day. Exclusive: The Francis Lawrence-directed feature adaptation of the Suzanne Collins prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes has added 11 actors in its final casting round.
This includes Tony Award nominee Fionnula Flanagan, who’ll play Grandma’am, young Coriolanus Snow’s (Tom Blyth) strict grandmother. Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, the 18-year-old is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a postwar Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. We’ve long been obsessed with disaster. On his new show The End Is Nye, beloved TV scientist and America’s father figure Bill Nye points to the storms of The Tempest, but even Shakespeare caught the catastrophe bug earlier than that. Twelfth Night opens with a shipwreck. In her menacing extreme weather speech in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Titania speaks of tremendous floods, rotting crops, and disappearing seasons. Now, we have 24-hour news channels that thrive on disaster porn.
Nye appeals to our attraction to calamity, even as he balks at it. “Think about it, people,” he declares on his debut Peacock series about the varied forms – from solar flares to careening comets – Armageddon might take. His eyes are wide, and his voice wobbles with opprobrium. “We’re like some kind of weird death cult.”
Honestly, it kind of hurts when “Bill Nye the Science Guy” reprimands you. What happened to the warm,...

Newcomers to science fiction might not know where to start diving into this strange and fantastical genre -- or even if it's worth the ride. But, good news! Sci-fi is incredibly versatile, containing elements and expectations that fit into several subgenres like action, horror, romances, and even comedies.
The World Fantasy award-winning Ray Bradbury once told The New York Times (via Reuters), "In science fiction, we dream." Sure, the genre allows writers, filmmakers, and viewers to imagine far-flung, fantastical worlds and creatures. But it's also a clever way to comment on humanity. Bradbury also said, "Science fiction is also a great way to pretend you are writing about the future when in reality you are attacking the recent past and the present." Sci-fi asks questions like: What might the world be like if we all suddenly learned that we are part of something larger?

All My Friends Hate Me (Andrew Gaynord)
Pete (Tom Stourton) hasn’t seen his university mates in years. Ten years to be exact. It happens. Life happens. We reach adulthood, mature, and set goals for ourselves that the people who were closest to us during that formidable period simply cannot follow—their own ambitions lie upon different forks in the road. So resentment shouldn’t factor in. Nor should jealousy. Yet Pete can’t help wondering about both. A little voice in the back of his head wonders if a decade was too long to pretend things could pick up where they left off. Would their very posh upbringing think he abandoned them to work with refugees? Do they think he thinks...

Troma Entertainment’s Lloyd Kaufman is as unique as his studio is independent. Ironic, sarcastic, or provocatively caustic, Uncle Lloyd has got something to say and gets his point across on several levels simultaneously. It’s more economical. The iconic studio is renowned for cult classics like Class of Nuke ‘Em High, Chopper Chicks in Zombietown, and Surf Nazis Must Die, but the low-budget auteur maintained a diverse career of almost 50 years of “reel independence.”
Troma was founded in 1974 by Yale film society buddies Kaufman and Michael Herz. Their movies were produced on tiny budgets and were proudly proclaimed to make only “the most offensive, tasteless films in the history of cinema.” Even the lowest of low budget studios aspire to the highest of standards, and those without any at all shoot for the moon.

Low and high brow keep a respectable distance in this campy, loose-bowelled adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. Troma Entertainment has been dumping its unique brand of independent shock cinema for almost 50 years, and for connoisseurs looking for their distinct aroma, Shakespeare’s Shitstorm does not disappoint. The uninitiated viewer may leave screenings disgusted and disgruntled. The director would have it no other way. He’s flushing his career with gusto.
This will be the last film from Troma co-founder Lloyd Kaufman, and he is really letting go. “Uncle Lloydie,” the 74-year-old low-budget filmmaking icon, is the centerpiece of the film. He wrote the script with Brandon Bassham, Gabriel Friedman, Frazer Brown, Doug Sakmann, and Zac Amico. Kaufman plays multiple roles in this tangled web of revenge and other fecal matters. As Prospero, Kaufman finds a mouthpiece instead of a codpiece, spouting undeniable truthisms in the name of pseudoscience.

The Oscars are a few days away, and I’m looking not only at the nominated actors’ performances this year, but at the stage careers that helped them develop and/or refine their skills to be eligible for Academy Awards. Half of this year’s Oscar nominees for acting were previously involved with Tony-nominated and other productions on Broadway.
For example, Ariana DeBose, the Academy Award Best Actress in a Supporting Role nominee, most-predicted on Gold Derby to win, cut her teeth on Broadway for a decade before she landed her nominated role as “Anita” in West Side Story. Her first Broadway job at age 21 was as a member of the ensemble of Bring It On in 2012, a Tony-nominated musical which required a lot of acrobatic dancing. Although it didn’t win any awards, Bring It On did have music and lyrics co-written by Lin Manuel Miranda with choreography by Andy Blakenbuehler.

Like mariners shipwrecked in “The Tempest,” tormented by a conspiring God, or Macbeth at Dunsinane, the cast and crew of Shakespeare in the Park’s “Merry Wives” faced promethean odds. As told in the new HBO Max documentary “Reopening Night,” the Public Theater’s endeavor to open “Merry Wives” as the first large-scale theater event in New York City last summer was as Shakespearean as its subject.

It's interesting to note that, of the ten episodes in the series, Cowboy Bebop Season 1 Episode 2 has the shortest run time at 37 minutes.
It also leaves Spike standing on a bomb trigger on a ship full of explosives.
So, in terms of narrative resolution, it leaves a lot to be desired. It's a bit like the Empire Strikes Back of the series.
However, "Venus Pop" provides a shipload of details on Spike's backstory and introduces Ana, another fantastic female butt-kicker.
It seems appropriate that she greets Spike with a smack to the face. Spike doesn't seem to inspire warm, fuzzy receptions in people despite his mostly calm demeanor.
So what do we learn? Ana's club is neutral ground, so cops and criminals can hang out together as long as they leave their conflicts at the door.
That being said, The Syndicate isn't exactly welcome, more like tolerated.
Spike respects and cares for Ana.
