Boutique German sales agent Patra Spanou Film has pounced on “Destello Bravío,” acquiring international sales rights to the feature debut of Spain’s Ainhoa Rodríguez’s film, which screened this week in main competition at the Rotterdam Film Festival.
“Destello Bravío” is produced by Rodríguez’s Tentación Cabiria, based out of Extremadura in southwest Spain, in co-production with Eddie Saeta, the Barcelona-based company of Luis Miñarro, one of Spain’s most internationally renowned arthouse producer-directors whose credits include 2011 Rotterdam Tiger Award winner “Finisterrae,” directed by Sergio Caballero, and the Miñarro-directed “Stella Cadente,” which world premiered at Rotterdam in 2014.
“Destello Bravío” depicts a group of mainly female characters in a small country town in southwest Spain. The feature captures the sentiments of these women, as the town is drained of its population, and their intense desire for liberating experiences.

Above: Destello bravío Normally, I’d be writing this dispatch from a hotel room, bar, cafe, movie theatre lobby, in a few minutes ripped out of time, hunched over my computer awkwardly quarter-opened in my lap, before another press screening began. Alas, such a physical, not to mention public, presence at a film festival is still depressingly impossible. Much of the festival world is still held captive by the pandemic that thwarted Cannes, limited Venice, and hobbled Toronto last year. I had hoped our coverage of a predominantly virtual New York Film Festival in October would be our last remote dispatch, yet 2021 looks much the same until vaccinations become ubiquitous. But things are not as they were in March last year. The film world is adapting with greater nimbleness than its creaky 125-year history suggests, and festivals have embraced temporary streaming solutions with remarkable agility and impressive audience engagement. Certainly...

The Intl. Film Festival Rotterdam had to forego a physical event for its 50th anniversary edition, but it’s aiming to reach a wider audience with expanded competition sections and showcases that include promising new voices and established filmmakers alike.
Under new festival director Vanja Kaludjercic, IFFR has reduced the overall number of films from the more than 270 feature films that unspooled last year while beefing up the main Tiger Competition, which celebrates innovative works from up-and-coming filmmakers, from 10 to 16 titles. Also expanded was the Big Screen Competition, which bridges the gap between popular, classic and arthouse cinema.
The revised competitions “encapsulate IFFR’s spirit as a platform for the discovery of visions that pique our curiosity and capture our imagination,” Kaludjercic says.
Female self-realization is one subject that is explored in a number of films vying for this year’s Tiger Award, namely Karen Cinorre’s U.S. title...

“Minyan,” an acclaimed tale of sexual and spiritual identity directed by Eric Steel, has sold to Strand Releasing in North America.
The film, starring stage breakout Samuel H. Levine of Broadway and the West End’s “The Inheritance,” played in the official selection at last year’s Berlin International Film Festival and went on to win Outfest’s grand jury prize for U.S. narrative feature.
In Judaism, a minyan refers to the minimum amount of celebrants required for certain religious traditions. Set in 1980s Brighton Beach, the film follows a young Russian Jewish immigrant who is caught up in the tight constraints of his community. He develops a close friendship with his grandfather’s new neighbors — two elderly closeted gay men who open his imagination to the possibilities of love and the realities of loss. In the East Village, he finds a world teeming with the energy of youth,...

Npact, the trade body that represents non-scripted producers, has eschewed its annual network-ranking survey this year, instead asking producers to name the best partner during the Covid-19 crisis.
Bravo, Discovery, HBO Max and Netflix have come out on top, according to the group.
Last year, HBO ranked as the favorite network to deal with – from pitch to series pick-up with Netflix named the “most respected” and most improved over 2019.
However, this year, the trade body decided to skip the broader survey and ask which buyer had been the best partner during global pandemic.
These networks, the group said, played a critical role in helping producers of unscripted stay solvent, keeping thousands of people safely employed, and audiences entertained.
The NBCU cable network, factual giant and two streamers emerged top of the list of 32 network partners that helped weather the storm.

The second half of HBO’s Tiger Woods documentary drew 874,000 total viewers on Sunday night, charting significant growth over Part 1.
Part 2 of “Tiger,” which notably featured Rachel Uchitel’s first-ever sit-down interview about her relationship with Woods, grew 37% over Part 1, which scored 639,000 viewers the day of its premiere last week.
The second installment covered Woods’ downfall in the wake of multiple injuries, the infamous 2009 affair scandal that tarnished his public image and the 2017 DUI arrest that many saw as a death knell for the golfer’s career. It also covered Woods’ comeback victory at the 2019 Masters Tournament.
“Tiger” currently stands as the most-watched HBO Sports doc since Bill Simmons’ “Andre the Giant” walked through the curtain back in April 2018. A spokesperson for HBO said last week that there have been “about 15” HBO Sports titles in the genre between the two docs.
“Tiger” hails from HBO Sports and Jigsaw Productions in association with Our Time Projects.

The filmmakers behind “Tiger” and “Fed Up” are teaming with the producer of “Jiro Dreams of Sushi” on a new investigative documentary into food safety.
Entitled “Poisoned,” the film will be directed by Stephanie Soechtig and executive produced by Jeff Benedict and produced by Ross Dinerstein’s Campfire. It will be based on Benedict’s book, “Poisoned: The True Story of the Deadly E. Coli Outbreak That Changed the Way Americans Eat.”
“‘Poisoned’ began with my interest in writing about the Jack in the Box E. coli infections in 1993 that sickened over 750 children, four of whom died,” said Benedict in a statement. “But once I entered that world, it became clear the story was much bigger than one outbreak. It’s the same broken system behind each of these horrific events, and while we’ve become more vigilant about what we eat, the issues plaguing the industry rage on.”
