Passable spy movie , being a Spanish/German co-production with big name cast giving out-standing interpretations
ma-cortes16 January 2018
Acceptable but average spy film about the Cold War and about what happened after the sudden fall of Berlin Wall , 1989 , including , crosses , doublé-crosses , twists , turns and confused script . It deals with a uncanny and astute spy , Michael (Tobias Moretti) who leaves his job as a spy after failing a mission and takes with him Helena , the daughter of a Russian spy (Marta Etura in doublé role) who dies under strange circumstances . Both of whom along with another spy called Peter (Eduard Fernández) leave their past behind and move to Barcelona and open a small restaurant . But the old colleagues attempt to retrieve at whatever cost a mysterious list that contains engaging information and some top-secret names , then thing go wrong .

The film has suspense , tension , emotion , mystery and specially in its final a little bit of violence . The flick is part suspense, part thriller , far better than any James Bond flick and next to the Spy Who Came in from the Cold. The plot is intricate with many twists , in which an escaped agent is pursued by his former colleagues who reappear with unfinished business and the excellent cast exploit for maximum impact. It keeps moving with twists to keep the viewer on his/her seat edge wondering who is who and who can be trusted. Although the picture has various ingredients for entertainment , the screenplay is confused and complex , the plot has gaps and results to be sometimes embarrassing . This movie is slow and hard to follow , but it has its moments here and there . The film belongs to spy sub-genre developed during the cold war and its maxim representation are John LeCarre's novels adapted to cinema in various films such as: ¨The spy who came in from the cold¨ (by Martin Ritt with Richard Burton), ¨Deadly Affair¨(Sidney Lumet with Maximilian Schell) , ¨Russia House¨ (Fred Schepisi with Sean Connery) and others as¨The Kremlin letter ¨(John Huston) .

The film profits itself from a great cast , including international actors . The star studded casting is important with known players as Tobias Moretti Maria Grazia Cucinotta ,Marta Etura , Héctor Colomé , Belén Fabra , Pep Tosar and Gottfried John . Special mention for Eduard Fernández , considered to be one of the best Spanish actors . And the veteran Maximilian Schell in one of his last films . The motion picture was profesional but slowly directed by David Carreras who formerly made ¨Hipnos¨ and he has directed various TV episodes as R.I.S. Científica (TV Series) , El Comisario, Hospital Central , and he , nowsaday , is directing films in Germany
