Last Friday I spent the hours from 4:00 Pm to 11:30 Pm watching three movies at Seattle's Neptune Theatre as part of the Seattle International Film Festival. The films included Spain's 2009 Foreign Language Oscar submission The Dancer and the Thief, Alejandro Amenabar's recently released Agora and Neil Marshall's forthcoming 2nd century actioner Centurion.
Following the long day of movies I posted on my Twitter account the following, "Today's Seattle Film Festival triple-feature: The Dancer and the Thief (C+), Agora (C) and Centurion (B+)." However, my opinion on the first two mentioned has since changed a bit.
First off, The Dancer and the Thief...

Olga Kurylenko in Centurion
Photo: Magnet Releasing In a couple of hours I am about to embark on a Seattle International Film Festival triple-feature taking in The Dancer and the Thief (Spain's 2009 Foreign Language Oscar submission), Alejandro Amenabar's Agora and finally, Neil Marshall's Centurion, a film of which I have just added nine new stills to the RopeofSilicon gallery.
Marshall directed the excellent claustrophobic horror The Descent in 2007 and after his awful 2008 entry, Doomsday, I am hoping Centurion is a bounce back to the spectacular.
Centurion is set during the war between Roman soldiers and Pict tribesmen during the 2nd century Roman conquest of Britain and stars Michael Fassbender as Quintus Dias, a Roman centurion and son of a legendary gladiator who leads a group of soldiers on a raid of a Pict camp to rescue a captured general (Dominic West). The son of the Pict leader is murdered during the raid,...

Producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori has named Niels Juul as temporary CEO of Cecchi Gori Pictures. Juul, a partner in the international brand recovery firm Nofatego, will be charged with restructuring the company and recovering lost assets.
Cecchi Gori, producer of such films as "Life is Beautiful" and "Il Postino," has been battling financial problems and bankruptcy proceedings.
"The Cecchi Gori name is a great brand with a history and integrity that means something in this industry, and I'm looking forward to bringing that name back to the forefront," Juul said.
Cecchi Gori Pictures most recently co-produced "Everybody’s Fine," starring Robert De Niro, and co-produced Fernando Trueba's "The Dancer and The Thief" (El baile de la Victoria).
"The last few years have been very trying for me and my family, but with the assistance of trusted friends we have prevailed in a very hostile environment," Cecchi Gori said. "With...

Pedro Almodóvar (above, with Penelope Cruz), Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker, Demi Moore, and Zoe Saldana will be presenters at the 2010 Academy Awards ceremony. Almodóvar, whose Broken Embraces was snubbed by Spain — their committee opted to submit Fernando Trueba’s The Dancer and the Thief instead — will probably be presenting the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, which may go to Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon. Unless, of course, the relatively few and generally older voters in that category decide to pick A Prophet (less likely; too tough) or The Secret in Their Eyes. Almodóvar made his first appearance in years at the Spanish Academy Awards — the Goyas — earlier this year. [...]...

Madrid -- Fernando Trueba's "The Dancer and the Thief" will represent Spain in the race for the foreign-language film Oscar, the Spanish Film Academy said Tuesday.
Trueba, who won an Oscar in 1993 for "Belle Epoque" with a young Penelope Cruz in the cast, beat out Isabel Coixet's "Map of the Sounds of Tokyo" and Daniel Sanchez-Arevalo's "Gordos" to be Spain's bid for the award. The film academy had shortlisted all three films two weeks ago.
"Dancer," which stars Ricardo Darin, is set in newly democratic Chile and is produced by Fernando Trueba P.C., with 6 Sales handling international rights.
The film had its world premiere out of competition in the official section last week at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
