Earlier this year, Nandana Sen represented India on the International Jury of the Pune Film Festival; Nandana is now in Austria, serving on the World Feature Film Jury of the Innsbruck International Film Festival, the largest festival of the region. But being elected to film juries is not new to Nandana, who has previously served on prestigious juries such as the Roma Fiction Fest, and Abu Dhabi International Film Festival (along with Abbas Kiarostami, no less).
Coincidentally, the only Indian film selected by Innsbruck is Ketan Mehta’s recently released critical success Rang Rasiya, starring Randeep Hooda and Nandana Sen, which earned the controversial actress a Kalakar Award for Best Actress. The feisty actress, who is also a well-known human-rights activist, was recently honoured with the prestigious Kalakar Award for Best Actress, previously won by sensitive actresses like Nandita Das, Deepti Naval, and Rani Mukherjee.

For the music of the films of 2014, the composers brought in classic voices, new vocal sounds and vibes and even an actress or two to bring their songs to life. Usually we limit our list to the 5 Best Female Singers but this year we had to expand to 10 in order to highlight their fabulous performances.
10. Shraddha Kapoor
For the first time an actress makes it to our Best Female Singers countdown. Shraddha not only shined in two completely different roles in Ek Villain and Haider, the young actress also showed off her lovely voice with two completely different tunes. With ‘Galliyan’ from Ek Villain, she impressed with her melodious tones. In ‘Do Jahaan’ from Haider she sang a Kashmiri folk song, about which director and composer Vishal Bhardwaj said, “After listening to the song they (Kashmiris) would want to keep you with themselves.” Perhaps one day in the future she...

To make Chaar Sahibzaade a film on the four sons of the Sikh Guru Govind Singh in the 3D Animation format and to see it finally being released last week was a dream that producer-director Harry Baweja nurtured for decades. To see that dream come to fruition after years of struggle is a life-changing experience for Harry who last directed Love Story 2050 in 2008. 7 years is a long time for a filmmaker to be absent from Bollywood where it's easily true to say if you are out of sight, you're out of mind. But it was a risk worth taking for Baweja. Sighing deeply after what he says was his first night of sleep after release, Harry Baweja who in the past has directed super hits like Dilwale and Qayamat, says, "It was definitely a risk worth taking. For five years I've worked only on my dream project. Now when...

There are two notable films releasing this Friday – The Shaukeens and Rang Rasiya. Between the two, no prizes for guessing that it would be the comic affair The Shaukeens that would lead the show. The film has been promoted well, the songs have made their presence felt too, the recall value is good due to remake factor and Akshay Kumar’s presence in a special appearance has got it further noticed. Moreover, Lisa Haydon is ensuring that her perky act pulls in masses to theaters. A seemingly safe affair due to controlled costs, The Shaukeens should take a decent start at the box office and find audience in single screens as well as multiplexes.
On the other hand Rang Rasiya is primarily a multiplex release and its promotion has picked up mainly in last 10-15 days. The film’s delay won’t make much of a difference though since it...

Rang Rasiya has been a victim of controversy since six years, from the time the film was completed. While earlier there were no takers who were ready to distribute the film, now that the film is finally getting a release, we hear that it has caught up in a legal issue owing to its content.

The suave actor Randeep Hooda, who was last seen in the Salman Khan flick Kick, is now all gearing up for the release of his next film Rang Rasiya (which had been lying in the cans for long).
Besides acting, it now seems that the writing bug has bitten the Hooda boy and which is why he is now all set to write a film. Reports state that the film he is writing will be revolving around boxing and will be based on Bhiwani district (Haryana). If the buzz is to be believed, then, the film might just be titled as Bhiwani and will be directed by Ashwini Chaudhary (who had earlier directed Jodi Breakers). Whether Randeep Hooda will act in the film is something that only time will tell.

Written and directed by one of India’s most acclaimed directors Ketan Mehta, Rang Rasiya is based on a classic Indian novel ‘Raja Ravi Varma’ written by the award winning novelist and playwright ‘Ranjit Desai’.
The movie is a sensuous love story of the great Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma and his muse. Both strikingly beautiful and audacious, the film charts the life of the great Indian artist from his early days under the patronage of a King of Kerala in the mid 1800s, moving on to British Bombay, where he makes his fortune. Here the genius gives birth to Indian modern art, helps inspire the independence movement and the dawning of Indian cinema with his depictions which bring to life the Hindu gods and goddesses.

The unexpected skirmish between two filmmakers Ketan Mehta and Neerraj Pathak has now gone to the courts.
On Wednesday, Pathak sent a legal notice to Mehta stating that that he should refrain from making a film on the life of 'Mountain Man' Dashrath Manjhi as he, Pathak, had the rights for making the bio-pic and had taken the permission of the family for the same.
But Ketan Mehta determined to go ahead with his film, scoffs at Neerraj Pathak's logic. "Manjhi's life is part of the public domain. Anyone can make a film on his life. There's no law to prevent it. When I made Rang Rasiya on the life of the painter Raja Ravi Verma, at least 3-4 other films on his life were announced. So what? I am sure my take on Manji's life would be very different from the other film."

Mumbai, May 22: Beautiful Nandana Sen shot bold scenes for "Rang Rasiya" unabashedly, but she feels boldness is treated with double standards in the industry.
The daughter of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, Nandana, who has never feared skin show, says it is important for filmmakers to portray intimacy and women in an artistic way.
"I do think boldness is a complicated issue, and needs careful consideration and treatment. Female bodies are often ruthlessly and ingloriously treated as objects in showbiz, and I'd never agree to that. It would take away my humanity.

Kolkata, Nov 16: National award winning filmmaker Ketan Mehta Wednesday said that his film 'Rang Rasiya' is a small token of response against the persecution of painter M.F. Hussian who was hounded out of the country for pursuing his creative freedom.
'The film is a small little way of response and reaction to the climate of intolerance that was sweeping in the country five -six years back. What happened to Raja Ravi Varma hundred years ago happens today also. If you look at M.F. Hussain, the great Indian artist was hounded, persecuted, prosecuted and thrown out of the country because of his art. He was forced to go on a self exile,'.

Mumbai, Oct 5: Actors Mahie Gill and Randeep Hooda, who gave some up, close and personal shots including a kiss for 'Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster', feel there's no big deal about intimate scenes.
'People were talking about it (the kiss) earlier. But after watching the film, nobody talked about it, which is a good thing. My family saw the film but they didn't even mention it or ask me about it,' Mahie said here.
Randeep, who earlier shot steamy scenes for his long-delayed film 'Rang Rasiya', too justified the scenes.
'It is a part of the film... It is not pornographic. It is actually a very emotional scene in.
