Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats are back to announce their fourth studio album, South of Here, due out on June 28th. The group has also shared the album’s first single, “Heartless.”
South of Here is the soul group’s first album since 2021’s The Future. It was recorded at Sonic Ranch in El Paso, Texas and produced by Brad Cook, who also produced the group’s previous album. In a statement, Rateliff praised Cook’s work behind the boards, and shared how his writing deepened when crafting the songs for South of Here: “Brad was a great producer to write alongside. This album is a look into my own struggle with anxiety, insecurity and also stories of my life. He encouraged me to take responsibility for my own narrative in the songs and to write about what’s happening in my own life,” he said.

“Iwájú,” Disney Animation’s sci-fi long-form series about a futuristic Lagos (currently streaming on Disney+ and coming to The Disney Channel April 22), is a far cry from such culturally diverse features as “Moana,” “Raya and the Last Dragon,” and “Encanto.” This is a Nigerian series — Disney’s first-ever outside collaboration of this kind — told from the Black team at Kugali Media, the U.K.-based Pan-African media company, voiced by Nigerian actors, and with a score from Nigerian composer Ré Olunuga.
“Iwájú” (which loosely means “the future” in Yoruba) began as a Kugali comic book anthology. Kugali co-founders Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, Hamid Ibrahim, and Tolu Olowofoyeku let it be known in an interview they had their sights set on animation and were determined to “kick Disney’s arse in Africa.” This came to the attention of Disney Animation’s chief creative officer, Jennifer Lee, who was so impressed with the...

The rise of quality in the entries of this list becomes evident every year, with movies from countries such as Israel, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Jordan finding a number of way outs through festivals and streamers, winning awards all over. Of course, Iran still heads the region, as its biggest movie industry, but the biggest surprise this year came from Sri Lanka, which produced three films of true quality.
Without further ado, here are the best West-Central Asian (rest of Asia one could say) films of 2023, in random order. Some films may have premiered in 2022, but since they mostly circulated in 2023, we decided to include them.

Miranda July has not announced another feature since she directed 2020’s “Kajillionaire.” But that should hardly be a surprise from the offbeat filmmaker whose previous movie, “The Future,” came out a decade prior. The Los Angeles-based artist fills in her time with visual and performance art as well as writing novels and short stories. Her novels tend to be about middle-aged women changing the course of their lives, as was the case with 2015’s sexually adventurous “The First Bad Man” and now next year’s “All Fours,” which July explains in the Art21 clip below is about “the second half of a woman’s life. And it’s also a romance.”
July shares an update on “All Fours” in this excerpt from “Friends and Strangers,” the third and final episode of Season 11 of Art21’s “Art in the Twenty-First Century,” broadcasting on PBS October 20.

Exclusive: L.A.-based Brit Stuart Ford has operated at the sharp end of international film sales and movie financing for more than two decades.
The AGC Studios boss and former Im Global chief has produced or distributed films with directors and actors including Martin Scorsese, Julia Roberts, Liam Neeson, Keanu Reeves, Johnny Depp, Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks, Nicole Kidman, Roland Emmerich and Madonna.
The sands of indie film financing are forever shifting but Ford and his collaborators were set a new challenge this fall when it came to launching three AGC-backed completed features amid the two Hollywood strikes: Richard Linklater’s Venice and Toronto title Hit Man starring Glen Powell, and Toronto movies The Woman of the Hour and Poolman, the directorial debuts of Anna Kendrick and Chris Pine, respectively.

It’s a welcome sight for any longtime visitors returning to Sarajevo, the white-jacketed waiters circling the terrace of the majestic, Austro-Hungarian-built Hotel Europe as film and TV industry professionals parse scripts and close deals amid the espresso-fueled chatter. Around them a haze of cigarette smoke hovers like the mist that settles each morning over the green hills that ring this scenic Bosnian city.
Each summer hundreds of industry guests from around the globe descend on the historic, 140-year-old Hotel Europe, which survived two World Wars and the shelling that razed Sarajevo in the 1990s and serves as the de facto hub of industry events during the Sarajevo Film Festival. Twenty years after its launch in a city still emerging from the rubble of a brutal, four-year siege, CineLink Industry Days has grown into the leading film and TV industry event in the Balkan region — a success story as improbable...

Bono made a surprise appearance at the Sarajevo Film Festival this evening, where he accompanied the crew behind the U2-inspired Bosnian war documentary Kiss The Future, which opened the festival.
Bono was joined by his U2 band member The Edge on the red carpet at Bosnia’s National Theatre alongside CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour, who also features in the doc, during which she recounts her time as a young reporter covering the Bosnian conflict.
Directed by filmmaker Nenad Cicin-Sain, Kiss the Future tells the story of the underground community that continued to work and live throughout the 1990s siege of Sarajevo. Amid the breakup of Yugoslavia, the citizens of Sarajevo woke up to find their city under siege and wider Bosnia at war.

Recently screened as part of Tribeca 2023, Noam Kaplan’s latest film, The Future, follows three women whose lives intersect at moments which present different challenges for each of them. Nurit (Reymonde Amsallem) is an Israeli criminal profiler and the designer of a new piece of software which is supposed to be able to identify terrorists by analysing their movements and behaviour. Yaffa (Samar Qupty) is a young Palestinian woman whose assassination of the Minister for Space and Tourism she failed to predict. Then there’s Maor (Dar Zuzovsky), whom Nurit is getting to know with a view to using her services as a surrogate so that she can experience motherhood. Over the course of a few weeks we observe their conversations and the way that they – especially Nurit – change as a result, whilst in the background, an Israeli space venture is attempting to put a man.

As we approach a state of near full transparency given the fast progress on the field of digitization as well as the advancement in technology, most of us have become predictable. Even though we still cling on to humanist ideals and individualism, the truth is not that we define algorithms and programs, but actually that it is the other way round. While these ideas are seemingly better suited in the realms of science-fiction, writer and director Noam Kaplan transports them into a whole different context. In the case of his new feature “The Future”, these and many other themes lay the foundation for a tense drama about terrorism, security and individuality.

Kelis reportedly has a new beau.
Kelis, 43, and Bill Murray, 72, are said to be dating after allegedly “getting close for a while” after first meeting in the U.S. The pair were said to have bonded after Kelis’ husband, Mike Mora, passed away last March after a battle with stage 4 stomach cancer. According to The U.S. Sun, Murray was on hand to watch Kelis perform from the side of the stage at the Mighty Hoopla festival in Brockwell Park, South London last weekend, as well as being spotted at some of her other shows.

The Tribeca Festival brings its unusual brand of film, music, TV, games, reunions and talks, audio and immersive storytelling to New York City this week, a festival for the city and the latest stop for the film community after a short post-Cannes break. Today’s opening may face unexpected headwinds as New York suffers a sudden, sharp deterioration of air quality due to wildfires in Canada.
The fest, which runs June 7-18, kicks off Wednesday with Kiss the Future, a documentary by Nenad Cicin-Sain produced by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Sarah Anthony. It closes with a 30th anniversary screening of A Bronx Tale, produced by and starring, respectively, Tribeca co-founders Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro. Just before the fest kickoff, NYC Mayor Eric Adams — who is attending opening night — will make an arts- and culture-related announcement with the actor.

The Cannes Film Festival comes to a close on Saturday and you can feel it. Things are starting to slow down, standing ovations aren’t as long and those on the Croisette are starting to get tired.
Beloved filmmaker Wes Anderson debuted his latest feature, “Asteroid City,” on Wednesday and the reaction was more muted than the reception to “Killers of the Flower Moon” or even the more mixed “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” TheWrap’s Steve Pond emphasized the whole did not live up to the sum of its parts, despite pristine craft as always.
“‘Asteroid City’ also feels like a wasted opportunity of sorts,” he said in his review. “At one point, a radio off-screen plays Slim Whitman’s ‘Indian Love Call,’ the song that killed all the alien invaders in Tim Burton’s ‘Mars Attacks.’ It couldn’t help but prompt a longing for the...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “The Great” Season 3, including the ending.]
Peter III did not live to be 295 years old, so he was going to have die at some point. The history books are murky on what actually led to the Russian emperor’s death in 1762. The version in “The Great” Season 3 is slightly more definitive, but like so much on that Hulu show, it’s more about perception than anything else. In a spring when surprise exits for central characters has led to many discussions about what shows do about what comes after, “The Great” has become a fascinating addition to the collection. How it bid adieu and what came next in the episodes that followed all speak to the strengths of a show that shouldn’t be flying under the radar.

Italy’s Intramovies has acquired global rights outside of Israel and France on Israeli director Dani Rosenberg’s Gaza-Strip conflict drama “The Vanishing Soldier.”
“Vanishing Soldier” is Rosenberg’s second feature after “The Death of Cinema and My Father Too,” which was in the official selection in Cannes 202O and won the Jerusalem Film Festival’s top prize.
The film is about an 18-year-old Israeli soldier who flees the Gaza battlefield and heads back to his girlfriend in Tel Aviv only to discover that the military elite is convinced he was kidnapped in the fog of war. Kicking off next month, Tribeca Festival can often be difficult to navigate with its many sections and sidebars, but steering away from some of the star-studded films that take up the spotlight, its strongest offerings are usually in the international sections. Today we’re pleased to exclusively debut the trailer for Noam Kaplan’s second feature The Future, which will world premiere in the International Narrative Competition section. Starring Reymonde Amsellem, Samar Qupty, Dar Zuzovsky, Aviva Ger, and Salwa Nakkara, the film follows a world-renowned profiler who is on a mission to study the motives of a young Palestinian woman who assassinated the Israeli Minister of Space and Tourism. From their intense encounter emerges a deep examination of female identity and motherhood.
Here’s the Tribeca synopsis: “When Israel’s Minister of Space and Tourism is murdered in the lead-up to the country’s first mission to the moon, Yaffa...

Hulu and FX’s newest release in the sci-fi/thriller genre is a fresh take on a group of FBI trainees who grow up to move to separate paths in life, only to be brought back together because of a common problem. Created by Tom Rob Smith, who also authored the story Class of ’09, it centers around FBI graduates, each of whom has separate interests in life, but nobody is willing to lay down their cards, at least not this early in the series. The show stars Kate Mara, Brian Tyree Henry, Brian Smith, and Sepideh Moafi, among others, and although it’s too early to give a decisive verdict, some of the actors are doing justice to their roles. Here’s what happens in the first two episodes:
Spoilers Ahead

Since FX moved under the Disney umbrella in 2019, it has sometimes been difficult to find its programming; I’m a professional and I’m often stymied when it comes to which FX shows actually air on FX and which are Hulu exclusives. But FX shows have still felt like FX shows.
The new FX-produced drama Class of ’09 is a puzzlement. One of those Hulu-only offerings, Class of ’09 surely has the air and aura of an FX show, from its sturdy, cinematic production values to a cast topped by FX veterans Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) and Kate Mara (A Teacher) to its creation by writer Tom Rob Smith (The Assassination of Gianni Versace). But what it feels like? Well, it feels like a broadcast TV show from a decade ago — specifically like ABC’s Quantico, a drama remembered largely by Priyanka Chopra Jonas devotees.

Two years after Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats released “Survivor” on their album The Future, they are revisiting the track with help from rappers Jim Jones and Conway The Machine and producer Mike Cash. Check out a video for the new version of “Survivor” right here.

Before Chris Evans grabbed a star-spangled shield and donned the mantle of Captain America, and even before the late, great, B-movie maestro Albert Pyun directed the straight-to-video 1990 "Captain America" movie, there was Universal's failed "Captain America" feature-length television film, which aired in 1979. Now a footnote in the history of superhero cinema, director Rod Holcomb's "Captain America" fits neatly next to the studio's 1978 "Dr. Strange" adaptation as similar attempts at seeing how Marvel's comic book characters could (extremely loosely) translate to low-budget, live-action TV material. Unfortunately for Holcomb, the project was a bit of an embarrassment.
Holcomb had already directed three episodes of Universal Television's "The Six Million Dollar Man" before taking on the task of adapting "Captain America," but the director was frightened that the production ended his career before it barely even began. The film starred Reb Brown, also known in B-movie circles from "Yor, the Hunter from the Future,...

Beyond the festival element of Series Mania, one major draw for international industry professionals is its industry strand, Series Mania Forum, which runs from March 21-23. The popular event, which largely centers around its Co-Pro Pitching Sessions, panels and conferences, nicely wraps up with its Lille Dialogues one-day summit on March 23.
This year, the Forum is expecting delegates from Europe, North America, South America and Asia to touch down with a number of top industry execs set to speak. Notably, HBO’s Casey Bloys, will be doing an In Conversation keynote speech during the Lille Dialogues titled ‘How HBO and HBO Max Are Diving into The Future.”
The theme for this year’s Lille Dialogues is ‘Shaping the Future with the Audiovisual Sector’ and additional speakers at the summit include: Beta Group’s Jan Mojto; Prime Video’s James Farrell; Sky Studios’ Cécile Frot-Coutaz; and an In Conversation with TF1’s Rodolphe Belmer.

With this year’s selection, the Berlinale seems to be creating space in the festival calendar, between Sundance and SXSW, for a particular type of American indie: the melancholy, slight, intensely personal and hence rather divisive kind, in which vaguely famous actors—usually the comedic kind—play downbeat iterations of their more familiar selves. It may not be a coincidence that Noah Baumbach’s Greenberg debuted here rather than home turf in 2010, but Dustin Guy Defa’s The Adults, which premiered in the festival’s Encounters strand, makes Baumbach’s problem child seem positively commercial by comparison. Fortunately for all involved, Universal have already picked it up; this is definitely not the type of movie to thrive in today’s marketplace.

Disney shocked the business world when it was announced in November 2022 that CEO Bob Iger, who led the company to heights it had never seen before, was returning to his post. Bob Chapek, who had taken over for him in 2020, was out after a tumultuous, short tenure. Iger had his first big return to the spotlight recently as Disney held its first quarterly earnings call following the executive's return, with much pressure to steer the ship in the right direction. Iger wasted no time in making big, drastic changes, particularly in light of the fact that Disney+ lost subscribers for the first time since its launch.
The company did, overall, beat expectations with reported revenues of 23.5 billion, up 8 from a year ago. Iger was welcomed with open arms and Wall Street has responded kindly to what he laid out; Disney's stock was up nearly 3 the morning following the call. During...

Launched last week by ex-Telemundo top exec Marcos Santana, Mas Ros Media, a groundbreaking new venture targeting gaming, esports and sustainability, has unveiled a first title: Banner series “The New Game.”
An eight-part Spanish-language scripted series, “The New Game” is created by Santana himself and Rodrigo Figueroa Reyes, founder and head of FireSports, the No. 2 esports company in Latin America and No. 3 in Spain, in which Mas Ros has taken an equity position.
Billed by Santana as an action drama, “The New Game” turns on upper-middle-class family, father, mother and three children, the elder, Isa, a first-year-university student studying for a medical degree, Ralph, at high-school, who plays half his free time playing a video game; and Federico, just nine, whose hero is Ralph.

In a commentary track on a "Futurama" DVD, voice actor Billy West reveals that his voice for Dr. Zoidberg -- the clueless, revolting, dumpster-dwelling lobster medic -- was partially inspired by 1940s Hollywood impresario George Jessel, one of the producers on the original "Nightmare Alley" and an actor in films such as "Four Jills in a Jeep" and the bawdy 1969 Anthony Newley musical "Can Heironymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?" When series creator Matt Groening incredulously asks West how he knows who George Jessel is, West shoots back with his own age (West was born in 1952).
Fun trivia: Eddie Cantor once joked that his gravestone should be inscribed with the poem "Here in nature's arms I nestle, free at last from Georgie Jessel." Jessel, not to be outdone by the burn, was actually buried next to Cantor.
The writers of "Futurama" likely didn't know that Jessel inspired the voice of Dr.

Our latest Blu-ray column is packed with some big new releases, folks. The biggest is perhaps the 4K release of "Heat," Michael Mann's crime epic about guys being dudes. In addition to that, the folks at Shout Factory have released the first three "Child's Play" movies in 4K. Then we have David Cronenberg's long-awaited return to directing, plus a so-so rom-com that tries to get by on charm alone, Ethan Hawke wearing a spooky mask, a polarizing folk horror pic, and a 4K release of Paul W.S. Anderson's best movie.
Heat 4K
"Heat" has never gone out of fashion, but Michael Mann's epic feels like it's having a moment right now. Not only did a sequel-in-novel-form, "Heat 2," just come out, but Mann's film is now on 4K for the first time ever. And really, what more can one say about "Heat" at this point? The film was...

She goes out on the road, driving for her van service, which takes families to visit their incarcerated loved ones in prisons hundreds of miles from the city. After decades of perceived underdevelopment, Spain reintroduced itself to the world in 1992. During the spring and summer of that year, the country hosted both the Expo ‘92 world’s fair in Seville and the Olympics Games in Barcelona. But against this celebratory backdrop, turmoil seethed as thousands of workers protested the economic measures that threatened the local industrial sector, eventually resulting in the razing of the parliament building in Cartagena—incidents all but forgotten in light of the day’s more publicized events. In The Year of the Discovery, director Luis López Carrasco looks back on the events of 1992 through the lens of the 2008 recession that crippled Spain’s economy. A kind of staged documentary set in a real-life bar in Cartagena, the film—co-written by Raul Liarte and shot by Carrasco on period appropriate Hi8 video—recreates the era through a combination of interviews and conversations with and amongst locals...

Pervasive use of split screen, a sprawling, relaxed approach to time and a carefully recreated period look – both in costumes and image quality – make the 1992 of The Year of the Discovery (El año del descubrimiento) feel truly unique.
