Chip and Joanna Gaines are joining the HBO Max family with content from their Magnolia Network. During a commercial break from the 2022 Emmy Awards, the streaming service launched a new promo where the couple was featured alongside the dragons from House of the Dragon and The White Lotus.
HBO Max teased the content on the streamer that included the Game of Thrones prequel, the film Elvis starring Austin Butler, Euphoria, Succession, Hacks, Love, Lizzo, The Batman, Westworld and many other titles.
“Picture a story that pulls you in, gets your heart racing and makes you pick sides, that hits your funny bone, breaks expectations, and changes assumptions,” reads the text over images of the content offered on the digital platform.
The Gaineses were featured with their show Fixer Upper: Welcome Home, which was developed for their own Magnolia Network and has been available on the discovery+ streaming service since its launch.

In the wake of Warner Bros. Discovery’s merger, HBO Max has removed a host of titles, including many that it produced and owns outright, prompting a single question — why?
Earlier this week, HBO Max thinned its library of available titles with the removal of 20 originals and an additional 16 movies. Some of the impacted titles were the one-season cult queer series “Genera+ion,” and animated shows like “Infinity Train” and “Summer Camp Island.” The streamer also announced that select “Sesame Street” specials would be cut, which turned out to be around 200 episodes of the iconic children’s show.
The answer is both simple and complex. Company insiders told CNBC that the dropped shows were not frequently watched but that their removal is expected to produce “tens of millions” of dollars in savings as Warner Bros. Discovery seeks to trim about 3 billion to pay down post-merger debt that has ballooned to more than 50 billion,...

Exclusive: Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan’s Aggregate Films is beefing up its television ranks, upping Roxie Rodriguez to VP Television and bringing in Emma Ho as Director of Development for Unscripted as the company is looking to expand its business beyond scripted programming.
“It will come as no surprise to anyone who has worked with Roxie that she deserves this promotion and has become such a valuable member of our growing team,” said Bateman and Costigan. “With her excellent taste and ability to both identify and build shows around unique voices, Roxie has been instrumental in developing our television slate with several new series that we are excited to launch in 2021 and 2022.”
Rodriguez began her career in Austin, Texas where she worked in independent film, serving as Associate Producer on the films The Skeleton Twins and Rock The Kasbah. She also had a run as a programmer for the Marfa Film Festival.

Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Network app (finally) revealed a launch plan on Thursday, when we found out the digital offering will precede the January 2022 DIY Network rebranding on linear cable. Additionally, we learned that the Magnolia app, which you can download this summer, will be a free add-on to the paid Discovery+ streaming service.
Previously, the concept appeared to include an option for consumers to pay for Magnolia programming in a standalone manner. Magnolia Network president Allison Page told TheWrap the plan experienced an “evolution to free,” and not so much a “shift.”
“A direct-to-consumer offering was something we envisioned from the beginning, we just thought we were going to start with linear and then move to the app. It was not determined that it would be paid, we kind of stayed open to all options as we went along. So that wasn’t a shift as much as an evolution,...

Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia app is set to launch on July 15, 2021, it was announced Thursday. On cable, Discovery’s DIY Network will rebrand as the Magnolia Network in January 2022.
The Magnolia app will be a free add-on for Discovery+ subscribers. That wasn’t always the plan — or at least, it was not always the extent of the plan. Originally, the partnership between Discovery, Inc. and the Gaineses was going to result in the linear cable channel (DIY), a TV Everywhere app and a standalone Magnolia SVOD service. However, the creation and recent launch of the all-encompassing Discovery+ streaming service changed the plans for that final piece.
In addition to episodic entertainment content, the Magnolia app will also include workshops, recipes and have a retail shopping platform, among other functionalities. So there will still be plenty of opportunities for monetization.

It’s a sign of the times — Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia joint venture with Discovery will make its debut on digital ahead of its linear launch.
Originally, Magnolia Network was supposed to take over Discovery’s DIY Network on Oct. 4 2020 after a rebrand, followed by a launch of a direct-to-consumer product at a later date. When the coronavirus pandemic hit and shut down all Hollywood production, the launch of the linear network was delayed. Meanwhile, Discovery launched their SVOD platform Discovery+ last month as the pandemic accelerated traditional media companies’ shift to streaming as a leading distribution method.
The Magnolia brand has been a key — and growing — part of the Discovery+ lineup with previews of many of its original series, led by the new season of the Gaines’ hit Fixer Upper. Starting July 15, there will be a lot more Magnolia content on the platform.

For viewers wondering when they can immerse themselves in a soothing loop of shiplap, farm-to-table food and rosy-cheeked gardeners harvesting flowers in the country, Chip and Joanna Gaines’ joint venture with Discovery, Magnolia Network, has finally gotten a new launch date after delaying an October start. But in the wake of the pandemic, that revised plan marks an inversion of the old one, with Magnolia to launch digitally first on Discovery Plus on July 15 and a rebrand the linear DIY network now coming in January 2022, Variety has learned exclusively.
“Basically, Covid hit, and we quickly assessed and realized we were actually okay for Oct. 4, but we probably weren’t okay for Nov. 4, in that we’d shot one or two episodes and either paused [production] or completely stopped down,” explained Magnolia Network president Allison Page in a virtual conversation from her home in Knoxville, Tenn. “And so it was getting the...
