Surprised and Pleased
doug2go9 May 2020
This may be the most frustrating show I enjoy and watch - this final left a lot undone - the plot itself was thin at best and the anticipation of a Magnum - Higgins season ending kiss was left for another day - in fact - the shoe runners are treating their obvious onscreen chemistry with a dose of cold water for some reason. It isn't working for me - they are not brother and sister - and Magnums lack of personal careing about Higgins plight was not entertaining. It was more about losing a partner than a friend or more. We need new shoe runners that can see that Fans want a romance not a wooden partnership between to chemically bonded personalities. That previous episode that had Higgins marrying TC because marrying someone she had been living with and partnering with was too obvious - was in a word - Ludicrous. Marrying Magnum would have been a perfect intro for Season 3 with the possibilities endless - I have to assume that the show runner or whoever story boarded that episode and show direction has an IQ lower than his body temperature. I am glad the show has been renewed and quite frankly a little shocked - without a Higgins - Magnum romance - I didn't give it much of a chance.

Meh.

This episode was pretty meh. Besides the action at the beginning, the storyline wasn't very interesting. The lack of drama and poor writing don't help the series very much. When I watch a Magnum episode, I expect a solid storyline, action, a few pop culture references, drama, and some humor. 3.5/10

what makes this good
montgomerysue15 May 2020
The negative reviews of this episode really surprises me. I thought this was one of the best of this season. There is plenty of action and, yes, some of it (ie. the semi-truck chase) is improbable, but that is what makes this show exciting and fun. Plus, the direction and editing of such scenes are always terrific. But, here, the entire cast (Hernandez, Weeks, Knighton, Stephen Hill, Amy Hill, and Kang) has some very good scenes and each of them are given a chance to shine. Scenes between guest star Corbin Bernsen and Rick (Zachary Knighton) and Bernsen and Kumu (Amy Hill) are particularly effective. These are all very good actors who, with season 2, have really come to develope their characters into interesting and likable people. I thought this was a terrific way to close out the season and I really look forward to the next one. Nice to see that this new Magnum has been showing up in Neilsen's top 10 most watched TV ratings in recent weeks. Congratulations to all involved.

Ridiculous!

Warning: Spoilers
Was the truck driver blind, deaf and, dumb?

Didn't notice there were 2 men fighting on the top of his trailer. Didn't notice a bright red Ferrari driving in reverse right next to him and didn't hear any gunshots. Then looked shocked at the Ferrari pulling him up, then magnum jumping off and never said a word! Just ridiculous.

Slimy, Sleazy, & Stupid
Johnny_West28 May 2020
Corbin Benson, who has all the charisma of a bag of rocks, comes back for a really dumb story. Benson plays Icepick, some lowlife who is best friends with Rick. He is dying of cancer, and got out of prison early so he could die at home.

In that condition, it is insane that the character gets shot in the guts, and he is never taken to the hospital, and does not die from septic shock. Septic shock happens when all the bacteria and fecal matter from your burst intestines leak out into the rest of your vital organs. Even in the Old West TV shows, they were smart enough to realize that you do not walk away from getting shot in the guts. Icepick in this episode gets up to seek Cowboy Cerrone in order to get revenge, then he spends forever talking about his life, and later he is handcuffed and taken to jail (not in an ambulance). Magnum might as well be a cartoon show.

This being the New Magnum, Rick thinks he might be implicated in Icepick's crimes, so he tells Magnum & Higgins that "He does not know anyone (dumb enough) to get involved in obstruction of justice (over and over again), so he needs their help." Of course, New Magnum is all for any criminal activity. Higgins always complains but she never backs it up by walking away. She is reduced to being a lackey or stooge, and her voice never counts.

The action scenes are good with Cowboy Cerrone, a gigantic MMA fighter who tosses Magnum and Rick all over the place. Normal people would have had to go to the hospital, but since this is a cartoon, they just get up and walk it off.

At some point Robin Masters is coming to Hawaii to help Higgins. Naturally, that should have been the first thing that happened, back in the previous season, when the Immigration nonsense was done to Higgins the first time. That Magnum ends its first two seasons with the same bogus immigration problem is pathetic writing. A good immigration lawyer would have solved the problem for Higgins, but in the world of New Magnum, anything legally done is never considered.

The bogus marriage angle that was floated for four episodes finally ended last episode. The sad reality is that Higgins and New Magnum have zero romantic chemistry. Higgins really does not have any warmth in her personality at all, and New Magnum is a two dimensional character, who seems incapable of looking sincere. Magnum always looks and sounds like a total phoney.

Every time Magnum & Higgins are together on screen, there is a definite chill between them. Magnum & Higgins never hug or touch, and I will not be surprised if Perdita Weeks reveals that she did not like Jay Hernandez. The original Magnum (Tom Selleck) & old Higgins (John Hillerman) had more warmth & chemistry.

Poor writing!

Please fire the Hawaii 5-0 lite writing staff. Hire new writers. Have the new writers watch the original show. Write new episodes based on the good parts of the old show. Change cast as needed.

Lame Final Episode
buddybradley-2266513 May 2020
After the crash ending to the terrible fake marriage plot we get this for the season finale. Why was this show picked up for another season? The writing is awful, the plots have turned daytime TV silly, and the action is ridiculous. They took a break in February. It wasn't long enough. Let's hope they get their act together before the fall. If they can't best to just cash it in and end the embarrassment.

Great cast

Great cast, terrific sceneries, and proven set up are all being wasted by shotty writing. It's not terrible just not what it could or should be.

Not a Higgins fan
jodi-4452818 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was skeptical to watch this series when it first came out. I mean, how do you re-do a classic tv show like Magnum. But most of the cast has stayed fairly true to the original. But I cannot stand Higgins.

This episode might be the one that has me quitting it. Robyn signing over the property to her? Really? That's pretty hard to swallow. And it eliminates a huge part of the reason that Magnum is on the estate. It completely shifts the power over to her, and it doesn't feel or sit well. Robyn was one of Magnum's allies. I find it hard to believe that he would sign everything over to her without considering what would happen to Magnum.

She didn't want to go through with a sham marriage to stay in the country but she'll go through with a shame business arrangement? She's utterly arrogant to begin with. This will make her utterly detestable.

I may watch one more episode but if this goes the direction I think it is going, I won't watch any longer. This story line just gutted the series.
