Line-up includes new features by Dario Argento, Jacob Tierney and Fantasia alumni Rob Grant and Kerry Prior.
Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival has announced the Off-Frontières selection for this year’s Frontières International Co-Production Market.
The line-up of 12 projects features projects from Canada, Mexico and the UK, among others, and includes the next features from Dario Argento and Jacob Tierney as well as follow-up features from Fantasia alumni Rob Grant, Pat Kiely, Kerry Prior and Olivier Sabino.
Stephanie Trepanier, Frontières creative director, told Screen: “The Off-Frontières line-up of project always allows us to include more projects we believe in, but couldn’t fit in the official 12-projects selection because of quota limitations or because the project is more advanced than the scope we set for the official Frontières line-up.

With Mutant Chronicles director Simon Hunter currently in pre-production on the apocalyptic vampire/zombie feature Last Blood, we caught up with Vincent Guastini, head of V.G.P Effects & Design Studio, who’s been tasked with delivering the flick’s special makeup effects, to get the skinny.
"I'm very excited about working with Simon,” said Guastini of the Last Blood director. “I'm a huge Mutant Chronicles fan, and during our Skype design meetings for Last Blood, we immediately started coming up with fresh ideas for the looks for the vampires and zombies. I have some pretty ‘out there’ ideas so we'll see after more locked in meetings this week with Simon, but he has an open mind and did say, ‘Lets do something never seen before.’”

Vampires continue to be all the rage. Sort of surprising considering how few films about them make any money at the box office. But here's a movie that has a pretty interesting premise. But will it make a good movie? I suppose we'll find out in the future.
Deadline is reporting that Reel Steel producer Rick Benattar is working with an upstart production and financing company called Cascade FilmWorks to finance a live-action adaptation of successful indie webcomic Last Blood. Published online beginning in 2006, Last Blood has accumulated 20 million readers worldwide, according to the Deadline article. It's set in a post-apocalyptic world where vampires battle zombie hordes to preserve their fresh blood depots.
The flick is slated to be helmed by Simon Hunter (Martin Chronicles) and production begins this fall. No word on casting as of yet, but we'll keep a close eye on this project. At the very lest,...

Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. Sunday has always been a cool down day for us, we kind of just try to relax a little bit more and enjoy it. That doesn't mean their isn't anything to see or do though!
We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.
Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

This is a milestone: it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con that a live-action adaptation of Last Blood, a webcomic first published on Keenspot back in 2006, is in the works with Simon Hunter (The Mutant Chronicles) directing with an anticipated 2012 release. To our knowledge, this is the furthest any webcomic has gone towards being adapted into a feature film.
The premise is amazingly simple: After zombies take over the Earth, vampires must protect the last surviving humans so they can live off their blood. Wackiness, as they say, ensues.
Last Blood will be produced by Ironclad exec producer Christian Arnold-Beutel as well as Red Giant Media’s Aimee Schoof, Isen Robbins and Benny R. Powell, and Chris and Bobby Crosby. The Crosby siblings created the graphic novel with illustrator Owen Gieni, and Bobby Crosby wrote the script with Nick V. Sterling.

Comic-Con used to be a comic, sci-fi and fan convention, but nowadays the annual affair has become so mainstream that every high-concept horror, science fiction and thriller feature -- no matter its comic or cult roots -- gets big play in San Diego. Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.

Even more classic cartoons are headed to the big screen. Alcon Entertainment is developing a live-action / CGI hybrid version of the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon Hong Kong Phooey and has hired David Goodman to write the screenplay. Goodman was an executive producer on "Family Guy" and "Futurama" and has also written scripts for a Who Is Killing the Great Chefs? remake and Last Blood webcomic adaptation. Hong Kong Phooey is a cartoon series that first aired on ABC Saturday morning in 1974 and features a kung-fu fighting dog and his sidekick cat who fight crime. Not much else is known about this. The trend of adapting classic cartoon into hybrid CGI movies seems to be slowly becoming more popular in Hollywood - to the point where I think CGI hybrids might be the future of children's movies. Most recently, we heard about a Smurfs movie, but in addition to that, we've ...

David Goodman has been tapped to pen "Hong Kong Phooey," Alcon's take on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon being produced by the company's Andrew Kosove and Andrew Johnson. Rat Entertainment is also producing.
The cartoon, which aired in the mid-1970s, concerned a kung-fu fighting dog and his sidekick cat who fight crime. Alcon plans to make the adaptation a live-action/CGI hybrid.
Goodman, an executive producer and writer on "The Family Guy," worked on "Who is Killing the Great Chefs?" a remake of the 1978 movie "Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?" which is set up at Warner Bros. He is also adapting the web-comic "Last Blood."
Goodman is repped by UTA and Benderspink.

Michael Marshall Smith’s The Straw Men novel and its graphic novel adaptation have both been optioned by Benderspink for feature film according to Variety. The crime novel was released in 2002 and was adapted by Zenescope Entertainment this past summer. Envisioned as a trilogy, the first book involves serial killers, some apparently random brutal murders, and a dark conspiracy. The film will focus on ex-homicide detective John Zandt who comes out of retirement to track down the serial killer who may have been responsible for the murder of his daughter.
The film will be produced by Benderspink’s Chris Bender and J.C. Spink along with Zenescope’s Joe Brusha and Ralph Tedesco serving as executive producers.
Benderspink has been one of the most active Hollywood production companies engaged in adapting comic book properties. Among the numerous comic-based projects that Benderspink has initiated are adaptations of Y: The Last Man, Pet Robots,...
