MGM+ will examine one of America’s most notorious serial killers in a four-part documentary series.
The cable outlet and streamer has picked up Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein, directed and executive produced by James Buddy Day (MGM+’s Fall River). The series comes from Roots Productions (The Devil We Know) and Day’s Pyramid Productions.
Gein has been the subject of numerous documentaries since his 1950s crimes were uncovered. The killer known as “The Mad Butcher” and “The Plainfield Ghoul” also served as inspiration for villains in the movies Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Silence of the Lambs.
The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein will feature previously unheard recordings of Gein and explore Gein’s twisted relationship with his mother, his early grave robbing and the murders leading up to his arrest.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, now 75, describes how positive visualization at a young age helped propel his careers in bodybuilding, acting, and politics in the trailer for the upcoming docuseries, Arnold. The three-part doc premieres on Netflix on June 7.
“I saw myself on the stage [with] thousands of people screaming, ‘Ahhnold, Ahhnold, Ahhnold,'” he says, between clips of him flexing so hard the veins on his biceps look like an oil pipeline and thumbs-upping would-be voters. “And when you visualize something very clearly, you believe that you 100 percent can get there.” The trailer then cuts to more flexing,...

“We all wanted to do an anthropological dig into the time,” declares Lesley Chilcott about the Epix documentary series “Helter Skelter: An American Myth.” The series is an in-depth examination of Charles Manson and his followers culminating in the brutal murders of several people — including the actress Sharon Tate — in 1969. Chilcott, producer of acclaimed documentaries such as “Waiting for Superman” and the Oscar-winning “An Inconvenient Truth,” acts as director of the six-episode series and is one of the show’s executive producers. In our exclusive video interview (watch above) Chilcott explains why it was important to avoid what she calls “the tabloid-esque coverage” of the Manson family.
Chilcott says that she took on the project in part because she never understood the public’s fascination with Manson, who died in 2017 while serving a life sentence. The director now says that it is the nature of the crimes that explains Manson...

Becoming a producer Sarah Schechter love baseball again. Today the powerhouse behind a record-breaking 17 current television series, Schechter found her way in the business making movies.
“When I first started working in film, what became so nice about watching sports was you didn’t know what was going to happen,” she says. “When you’re reading so many scripts, you start to feel like you know what’s going to happen in each one. Then you work on projects where you read the script over and over again, and you don’t have surprises. So I kind of fell back in love with baseball, particularly, because it was like, “Oh, I don’t know what’s gonna happen here. There’s no script to read. You’re going to have to wait till the end.’”

British punks Idles delivered an explosive cover of the Beatles’ “Helter Skelter” during a recent livestream performance at Abbey Road Studios in London.
The performance got off to an endearingly clunky start, with a few members of Idles flubbing their opening cues. But the band soon latched onto the relentless lead riff of “Helter Skelter” and proceeded to take what’s already one of the Beatles’ heaviest tracks to a place packed with ear-scratching feedback and ground-shaking drums. It was all capped off by the kind of howling vocal performance...

Epix has released the official trailer for “Enslaved,” an upcoming docuseries that will feature three storylines, including one that centers on Samuel L. Jackson’s journey to identify his ancestral tribe.
Here’s Epix’s synopsis for “Enslaved”: “Using new diving technology — such as advanced 3D mapping and ground-penetrating radar — to locate and examine sunken slave ships on three continents, the series reveals an entirely new perspective on the history of the transatlantic slave trade. The series also tracks the efforts of Diving With a Purpose, a collaborating organization with The National Association of Black Scuba Divers, as they search for and locate six slave ships that sank drowning the enslaved humans aboard. Featuring the most dives ever made on sunken slave ships, “Enslaved” also chronicles the first positive identification of a “Freedom Ship,” an American schooner that ferried African American runaways to Canada.”

Osamu Dazai, born Shuji Tsushima, is one of the most well known figures in Japanese literature, with several hit novels, including “The Setting Sun” and “No Longer Human”. The latter, his last work released posthumously after his suicide, is considered to be his crowning glory and stands as the second highest-selling Japanese book of all time. Dazai himself had a very eventful life, dotted with his alcohol abuse, womanising ways and several suicidal attempts, all of which have been the inspirations of many representations in various forms of written and performed art, including films, manga, anime and more. The latest to tell his story is “Helter Skelter” director Mika Ninagawa. “No Longer Human”, as its Japanese title “Osamu Dazai and the Three Women” suggests, follows the latter part of his life and the three key partners that not only influenced some of his best works but also led to his ultimate demise.

One summer in the late 1980s, when Eli Frankel was about 15, his father gave him a gift. An active part of the 1960s counterculture, the elder Frankel thought his teenage son should be reading more, so one day he brought him Helter Skelter, the 1972 true-crime bestseller about Charles Manson. Written by Vincent Bugliosi, the L.A. County deputy district attorney who had put the cult leader and several of his followers on death row, the tome — clocking in at almost 700 pages — set out the narrative the prosecutor had put in place during the trial: Manson,...

Michael Wright joined Epix in 2017, just six months after MGM assumed control of what had been a joint venture between the studio, Lionsgate and Viacom by buying out its former partners. Since then, the premium cabler has grown its linear distribution, built out SVOD subscribers, and increased the breadth of its original programming by multiples of hours. Wright is pleased to now be seeing three years of work come to fruition — but not too pleased.
“At the risk of sounding like a cliched football coach, I would describe myself as pleased but not satisfied,” Wright says. “Less than two years ago, we were only available in about 40 million homes and had a handful of very high quality shows with little awareness. And today, we’re available literally everywhere.”
Of late, Epix has been steadily gaining creative traction with dramas such as “Perpetual Grace, Ltd.,” starring Ben Kingsley; “Pennyworth,” a Batman...

Billy Goldenberg, the Emmy-winning composer and songwriter, died Monday night at his home in New York City. He was 84.
Goldenberg wrote the themes for such 1970s TV series as “Kojak,” “Harry O” and “Rhoda,” composed the pilot scores for “Night Gallery” and “Columbo,” and won Emmys for the TV-movie “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” and miniseries “The Lives of Benjamin Franklin,” “King” and “Rage of Angels.”
He expanded his 1975 “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” song score, with lyricists Marilyn and Alan Bergman, into the score of the 1978 Broadway musical “Ballroom,” directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett of “A Chorus Line” fame. It earned eight Tony nominations including Best Musical.
Reminiscing Wednesday about their collaboration on “Ballroom,” Alan Bergman told Variety: “Billy was one of the rare composers who was also a dramatist. Lots of people can write melodies, but you could tell Billy the situation, what the characters were feeling,...

If you're one of those crazies who fell in love with Joe Exotic, you might want to look away.
How this lunatic captured the hearts of viewers on Netflix is entirely beyond me, and I found watching that series was very difficult.
Thankfully, Animal Planet had exclusive access to Joe and his zoo four months before he was arrested on murder-for-hire charges.
The result of that time is Surviving Joe Exotic, in which we'll meet some of the animals who got away from the man who quite clearly in this preview proves he has no love of animals,...

The myth of Charles Manson and Helter Skelter struck a chord when he manipulated "the family" to murder innocent but well-known people to push his still rather confusing agenda to start a race war.
The family was Manson's groupies.
They considered Manson a rockstar and a messiah, and their love for him drove them to unforgivable places. They fell for the erstwhile charms of a petty conman and cemented a place in history.
Helter Skelter: An American Myth will air on Epix beginning Sunday, July 26, and director Lesley Chilcott went to great lengths to dig into Manson's history, hoping to show, with extensive research and first-person interviews, that Charles Manson has not been worth over 50 years of fascination.
Chilcott's documentary series feels like the definitive exploration into Manson and his followers.
She doesn't portray Manson in a favorable light, deserving of obsession but highlights how the times and Manson's extensive...
