AIDS tackled intelligently in this episode
dship13 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
One of the more powerful episodes of the series that looked AIDS straight in the eye. Donald throws a party for his friends--Bubba (James Avery) is in attendance. It comes out that Bubba has AIDS and, needless to say, the party atmosphere suddenly becomes somber. Lines like "Do you know there are undertakers who won't touch my cold, dead body?" reflect the mid 80s--the disease was not understood, primarily affecting the gay community and (worst of all) it was a death sentence. Donald educates Cliff (and the viewer) that protection is as simple as "what every pimply-faced teenage boy carries in his wallet". The episode dealt with AIDS before any broadcast network would dare touch the subject--one of the advantages of premium cable in 1985 (Showtime). If you only see one episode of "Brothers", make this the one.
