Richard Ray Whitman: Frankie

Quotes

  • Frankie : I feel good as long as I keep moving, keep going. They was just going to let me fade away in the old hospital bed. But I know I have to keep moving.

  • Frankie : You know no one stops and picks up hitchhikers anymore.

Irene : Don't trust anybody. People get killed.

Frankie : I always try and stop and pick 'em up. Good karma.

  • Frankie : Your nephews are friggin' idiots.

  • Frankie : You know I can tell you by looking at these pictures where my kids were. Should've been with me, but they weren't.

  • Frankie : The most honest man I ever knew, you know who? My grandpa. Man never told a lie, I know of. The bell ring at the church, every time someone die, I'd walk with him down to church. He'd ring the bell as many times as they was old. No matter what time of night, he'd come wake me up. Call came to the neighbor, come tell us who it was, we'd walk on down to church. I never did ask him how he knew someone had died before the call came. It was magic. It's what I miss most about being young... magic.

  • Elvis : Hey! What the hell is going on here? Some kind of voodoo shit? Listen I got a gun right over here at my house. It wouldn't take me three and a half minutes to go fetch it. You can't do voodoo on my land.

[after Irene and Frankie stop in the woods]

Frankie : It's not voodoo you jackass.

Elvis : What you expect me to think, I look out here you crazy, waving stuff around, smoke?

  • Irene : We're not married. Wanna know why?

Wendy : [looks at her uncomfortable boyfriend]  Sure.

Irene : He left me. I told my brothers that he roughed me up and that he threatened to kill me. They beat the hell out of him. But he never told 'em that I made it up. He never told anyone.

Wendy : Oh you have a tape player!

    [changing the subject]

Frankie : Oh yeah, yeah. You got any tapes?

  • Frankie : 'Now we have been praying. Now we are going to dismiss. Give us your peace and dismiss us. This land we leave when we arrive at your place. Rest we want'.

[Frankie remembering a tribal song from childhood]

  • Frankie : You know I've been thinking, you came down on me pretty hard about how I live; my clutter. You know after you left me, for a couple months, you know I kept that place spotless. In case you decided to check in on me. Of course you never did. I still love you. Always have. Always will.

    [to Irene]

  • Frankie : Seems so strange, you know I, I won't be feeling this rain anymore or feeling this wind. Always thought I'd go out in... go to sleep and never wake up. This going slow shit, slowly losing control. Yeah. I still got my mind. So weird, you know, I finally feel like I am figuring it out and damn I'm out the door. I think I'll go over and watch these kids play.

  • Frankie : Can you talk Indian?

Girl : No but I can count to four.

Frankie : To four? Can I hear yah?

Girl : Hvmkon, hokkolohn, tuccen, ostohn.

    [numbers in Mvskoke language]

Frankie : Ah good, yes. What else can you say in Indian?

Girl : I can say 'thank you'. Mvto

    Frankie : Mvto!
