This Halo article contains spoilers.
The second season of Halo may be hitting too close to home for Pablo Schreiber’s Master Chief and Silver Team. After the destruction of Sanctuary in the premiere, John-117 suspects it’s only the beginning of a mass offensive that will eventually end with the Covenant invading Reach, the center of Oni and humanity’s military might in deep space. If Reach falls, there’s basically nothing stopping the Covenant from heading to Earth next.
The invasion of Earth is something that did eventually happen in the games. Although the series is set on a separate timeline than the games, this invasion feels inevitable on the Paramount+ series too, especially since no one in Oni command heeds Master Chief’s warnings that the Covenant have already infiltrated Reach. It’s only a matter of time before the Covenant make their move. And when they do reveal themselves,...

[Spoiler alert: The Bachelor 2024 spoilers ahead regarding the fifth rose ceremony.]
‘The Bachelor’ Season 28 spoilers: Who goes home in the 5th rose ceremony?
The Bachelor Season 28 Episode 4 didn’t end with a rose ceremony, meaning episode 5 might start with the fourth rose ceremony and end with the fifth one. Joey Graziadei had important decisions to make in episode 4, though. Not only did he have a wonderful one-on-one date with Lexi Young (which ended with her receiving a rose), but he took Sydney Gordon and Maria Georgas on a two-on-one date.

Under the old political regime in Taiwan it was difficult to make features, given the thematic and narrative constraints producers and directors had to obey. However, as these began to shift somewhat in the 1970s, the career of filmmakers such as Lee Hsing truly flourished as he began to tackle current issues, for example, in his Vertigo-esque “The Young Ones” or the drama “The Story of a Small Town”. Arguably one of his most well-known projects from that era is “Execution in Autumn”, a period drama set on the brink of the 1900s. Hsing has gone on record, stating this is his favorite film of his career, perhaps not only due to the nods at the likes of Kenji Mizoguchi, but also due to its universal and political themes.

Tonight's new, premiere episode 1 kicked off with Joey's intro package. He let us know what he's looking for in a future wife and all that jazz. Then, he talked with host Jesse Palmer for a few minutes. After that, it was time for the ladies to arrive and show their stuff. A few of the ladies stood out as they often try to do with their efforts to create a memorable first impression. Maria gave Joey a Canadian flag at some point. Erika showed up dancing for Joey. She loves to dance, and she definitely made sure Joey knew it, and he seemed to enjoy it. Autumn told Joey, "I hope you fall to love Autumn...

The UK government has used its Autumn Statement to quell industry concerns around the new tax credit but decline to raise relief for indie film, while Equity has slammed the Conservatives for “undermining public service broadcasters and pursuing a culture war against marginalised groups.”
Delivered earlier this afternoon, the statement from Chancellor Jeremy Hunt dealt with complaints from the likes of Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount and Pinewood by scotching planned restrictions on tax credit relief for what is termed “commercial party transactions,” along with addressing concerns over which documentaries qualify for the credit.
Hunt also announced he will launch a consultation that could see tax relief expanded to cover VFX.
Introduced more than a decade ago, the UK’s lucrative film and high-end TV tax credit has been hugely successful. It was simplified by Hunt eight months ago when he announced a new Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit to come into effect next year,...

Another Autumn, another superhero movie for the disciples of the MCU to feast on – and this time it comes in the form of The Marvels, directed by Nia DaCosta. We loved the film – read our glowing review here.
To mark the film’s release, we had the pleasure of sitting down with the indie filmmaker, who has been given the keys to the kingdom, in what is comfortably the largest movie of her career to date, and she does a good job in capturing the endearing tonality of the franchise, while giving fans much to be entertained by. She talks to us about the film’s modest run-time (the shortest yet in the MCU), while also speaking about the directing the three leads: Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris & Iman Vellani.
She also speaks about the frenetic energy and challenges that derive from shooting the ambitious action sequences, as well as talking about representation within the MCU.

Fresh off the release of the Gaslight Anthem’s new album History Books, the New Jersey rockers appeared on CBS Mornings’ Saturday Session to showcase a pair of tracks from their first LP in nine years.
For the mini-set, Brian Fallon and company performed “Autumn” and the title track, the latter sadly (and predictably) without Bruce Springsteen, who appears on the History Books version of the song. The band also dug out “Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts,” the Garden State-inspired cut from the Gaslight Anthem’s 2008 EP Señor and the Queen.

The Gaslight Anthem are back with their first album in nearly a decade, History Books, out today, October 27th on their own Rich Mahogany Recordings via Thirty Tigers.
“None of us wanted to make a very somber or serious record showing how much we’ve matured,” singer Brian Fallon said in a statement about their follow-up to 2014’s Get Hurt. “We’ve all changed and grown and learned so much, but the overall mood was a feeling of excitement to be back together and making music that means something to us.”
In an interview with The Associated Press, Fallon explained how the title track — which features Bruce Springsteen — came together. After calling on Springsteen — who over the years became the artist’s friend, not just idol — for advice about potentially reuniting The Gaslight Anthem, the legend himself proposed a duet. “We didn’t want to make a record that felt sub-heart,...

Sometimes, a rare gem of a movie comes along that feels very raw and intentional. Shortcomings does sometimes live up to its name, but it’s also a very thought-provoking film that just needed some polishing. You can read our full review to know why, but for now, let’s jump straight into the film. Ben and Miko have been together for six years, and lately, they get on each other’s nerves a lot more than they used to. Ben’s a very entitled man, in the sense that he thinks he knows best and wants to be different from everybody and have unique tastes. He thinks he’s above it all—race, art, film, relationships—and has no filter. In the opening act of the film, there’s a presentation of a movie made by Miko that looks very much like it came out of Crazy Rich Asians,...

Playing an event as major as the Super Bowl Halftime Show is a career-defining feat — but Ed Sheeran isn’t really interested. During a recent interview with SiriusXM ahead of a performance in New York, the musician told Andy Cohen that he would consider joining someone else’s headlining show but doesn’t see the appeal in being the big-name performer himself. “I don’t think that anyone wants to see me do the Super Bowl either,” he admitted. “I think that would be the only way that I would do it,...

It was only last month when Rivers Cuomo admitted that, yeah, Weezer have maybe put out a little “too much” music in recent years. But the man isn’t regretting all of his band’s later discography, telling Vulture that he thinks their best album is — not The Blue Album, not Pinkerton — but their four collective Sznz EPs.
“Like many artists, I’m usually most excited about the thing I just made,” Cuomo said in a new feature with Vulture, while also noting that he “doesn’t do favorites.” But he did try to pick a favorite Weezer album: “I love Summer, Autumn, and Winter all for different reasons. They all came out last year. It would be very hard to choose, so I’ll just say Sznz.”
Proving his case even more, Cuomo cited a Sznz cut when asked about what Weezer song he wishes more people liked: “We...

George Winston, the singular pianist who fused inspirations from stride, R&b and New Age styles to create his own smooth instrumental music, died June 4 at age 73. He had been battling cancer for the past 10 years, according to a statement on his website.

He released his 16th studio album, Night, on May 6, 2022, via RCA Records but postponed this year’s tour dates because of his health. He had been planning to resume touring in 2024.

Perhaps humbly anticipating a slightly less prestigious premiere than in competition at Sundance, Randall Park’s “Shortcomings” opens with an amusingly broad parody of “Crazy Rich Asians” (starring original cast member Ronnie Chieng alongside Stephanie Hsu) playing at a Berkeley-based Asian American film festival. As the credits roll, the audience hoot and holler their approval — all except for struggling Japanese American filmmaker Ben (Justin H. Min), who wears the pained expression of a man passing a kidney stone. In the lobby with his girlfriend, Miko (Ally Maki), who works for the festival, Ben is asked what he thinks by the ebullient director of the film. Struggling for a diplomacy that we soon learn does not come naturally, Ben leads with “It’s … quite the event.”
“Shortcomings,” in its way, is also quite the event. A fresh-faced, funny directorial debut from the ever-engaging Park, who starred in “Fresh off the Boat” and “Always Be My Maybe,...

They say that all good things must come to an end, and this eBook only release of Isolation brings David Moody’s zombie writing to an end, collecting his remaining fiction together and drawing a line underneath his undead work. Never say never, of course, because horror has a way of coming back from, ahem, the dead, but for now those of us who have been on Moody’s journey through the zombie apocalypse can step into his cadaver filled world one final time.
There are five stories in this collection, the main one being the titular Isolation, a novella based on a screenplay that Moody had been working on developing into a movie with Colchester based director Will Wright but which had, as these projects often do unfortunately, stalled. Telling the tale of Keith, a socially awkward young man who initially finds himself alone among the suddenly deceased rest of the world,...

After being introduced to Dana Fredsti’s take on the zombie apocalypse last year in the form of Plague Town and Plague Nation (read my review here), I’ve been looking forward to the concluding part of the trilogy and I’m happy to report that I haven’t been disappointed.
Picking up right where Plague Nation left off, our heroine Ashley Parker is plunged straight into a battle with the undead, Fredsti launching into her trademark breakneck pace that doesn’t let up until the end of the book. As the title suggests, the zombie plague has progressed from its initial outbreak in Redwood Grove (a la Racoon City), via the whole of America, and now to the rest of the world, having finally gone airborne.
Ashley’s story is focused on San Francisco, where she and the rest of her Wild Card team – people who have survived zombie...

We’ve become accustomed over the years to having several different versions of films made available to us, whether the theatrical release, the director’s cut, the work print or even the bootleg Producer’s cut (bonus points if you know which movie I’m referring to with this one*), but with The Cost Of Living, David Moody has done something similar with a story.
As he explains in his introduction to this kindle only release, the idea for the story had been kicking around for a few years, and at one point was to have been included in the Autumn universe as one of the many short pieces of complementary fiction that were collected in his anthology The Human Condition and fleshed out his world of zombies.

Ever had the feeling that somebody was watching you? That eyes were upon you, recording every movement, every breath, every nervous darting of your eyes as you try to figure out just why the icy fingers of paranoia are lightly tracing themselves up and down your spine? We’ve all been there from time to time, but spare a thought for the Keene family, who quite literally become the centre of attention in Nathan Robinson’s novel Starers.
It all starts when Dylan Keene arrives home with his brother Lennon after a session in the pub. They barely notice an old man standing at the bus stop across the road looking at the house, but when he’s still there in the morning, and then the next door neighbour turns up in the back garden – stark naked - also looking at the house,...

Zombies are all the rage (virus) at the moment, from the televisual delights of The Walking Dead to the cinematic spectacle of the recent World War Z adaptation, via video games – notably the upcoming Dead Rising 3 – and books, including David Moody’s Autumn series and Dana Fredsti’s Ashley Parker novels (reviewed by Shadowlocked here).
An area that doesn’t get quite as much attention, though, but really should is the tabletop game arena (i.e. board or card games). In recent years there has been an outbreak of zombie themed games, including two different Walking Dead offerings and the very enjoyable Zombies!!! (see Shadowlocked’s review here) but as fun as they are, they can’t compare to the glorious anarchy that is Munchkin Zombies.
If you’ve never played Munchkin (in any of its varieties) the rules are pretty simple and can be picked up in no time at all.

Fresh from triumph on the festival circuit, a host of exciting British films is set for release. We talk to the directors behind this sudden renaissance
At Cannes, in May, there was anxious talk. Of the 70-plus features showcased at the film festival only two of them were British. Did it signal a decline in the UK industry? By the end of 2013, would our film people be wringing their hands while cinemagoers queued up for American fare and the House of Lords unhappily convened a select committee?
Without a doubt, the pair of British films on show at Cannes were excellent – Clio Barnard's The Selfish Giant and Paul Wright's For Those in Peril – both bruising, powerful dramas. But French and American and Mexican and Chinese and Cambodian film-makers left Cannes with the top prizes; meanwhile fans and boosters of British cinema travelled back across the Channel in mild panic.

Zombies!!! They're everywhere these days. World War Z is being waged at the cinema, The Walking Dead are shuffling across our television screens, and David Moody is the King of the literary cadaver with his Autumn series. So what better time for Shadowlocked to assemble its game playing avengers to put the 'does what it says on the tin' Zombies!!! board game through its paces.
Set in a city that unfolds over thirty tiles that each contain nine playing spaces, Zombies!!! is reminiscent of golden age games like Mystic Wood and Sorcerer’s Cave where the actual play area is revealed as the game progresses, ensuring a different experience every time you play.
Each turn begins by drawing one of the pre shuffled board tiles and adding it to the existing town, ensuring that, as in real life, roads marry up with...

As regular Shadowlocked readers will know I’m a major fan of all things zombie, and have watched, read, played and written about more z-related things than is possible healthy for one person, but like the walking dead themselves, I’m always hungry for more.
In terms of zombie literature, I think it’s fair to say that the shelves are positively groaning with hordes of undead adventures, and that for every masterpiece like Max Brooks’s World War Z, Brian Keene’s The Rising, David Wellington’s Monster trilogy or David Moody’s Autumn series there are a horde of pale imitations that leave a taste in the mouth not unlike Boomer bile.
Thankfully Dana Fredsti’s Plague Nation is way up the z-scale in terms of enjoyment and is a welcome addition to the party. Upon receiving Plague Nation and its predecessor Plague Town I was initially fearful...
