After Peter embarrasses her at a party, Lois forces him to go to the library and pick up a book. She suggests 1984, but he accidentally gets the Van Halen CD 1984. This turns him into a massive Van Halen fan, to the annoyance of Lois.
This is one of those episodes that takes a while to get to the plot, but if it's funny it still works. And luckily, most of the jokes hit home. At the party we have Brian being very dog-like when he begs to eat the flood getting left on the floor. We get a conversation between Peter and the librarian Joanna, who makes her typical cheesy jokes, the guy who sees Peter rocking it out and assumes he is listening to the George Orwell book, and a nice appearance by Ernie, who challenges him to a race-off.
This is when he crashes and falls into a coma, and get we get some cool visuals and references there. Peter drowning in Kool Aid with a bunch of other Peters repeating his line about why he doesn't like The Godfather (from The Griffin Family History), the Giant Chicken court finding him guilty (or "Bacaw" rather) and the bullfrog trying to throw Peter out instead of the other way around. I just found the idea of little Peter being treated like a disposable animal very amusing.
It was interesting though kinda sad at the same time seeing all the dead characters over the years on a cruiser, even though technically a few of them weren't shown to have died before. Brenda is especially unsettling to see there, given that it's likely she committed suicide in that case.
Once Peter wakes up from the coma the plot starts to sag a bit, but we still get some good gags such as Peter being a spoiled white woman on a vacation, and him trying to make the family say something nice about Timothy Olyphant's new Netflix show.
There's also a moment of sweetness as Peter looks back at all the good times he's had with his family once they leave him, which additionally serves as a clever parody of emotional flashback scenes, making fun of how many of them seem to involve painting for whatever reason.
While conceptually it's intriguing though, I have some problems which bring it down a little for me. The most primary one is Lois. She is incredibly unlikable in this one. Getting annoyed about Peter taking his Van Halen adoration too far is one thing, but not even hesitating one moment to pull the plug and then getting pissed off he's upset it was that easy for you? Sorry Lois, but you are the ass-hole this time, not Peter.
I also wish it stuck with the coma aspect a bit more, since I found that more intriguing than the drama involving the family in the third act.
The heavy use of CGI in the car chase scene between Joe and Peter was very distracting and felt out-of-place.
The joke near the end with the singing fly coming up with conspiracy theories, then mentioning his music website dragged on too long.
Not exceptional, but a solid entry in the 18th season.
