Circuses and toys

'Phineas and Ferb' was so good in helping me through many tough periods during its run. Still do get a lot of pleasure out of watching re-runs of what was, when airing, one of the few shows on the Disney Channel regularly worth watching. Admittedly the later episodes are not quite on the same level as the more creative earlier seasons, but 'Phineas and Ferb' at its weakest still managed generally to be better than a lot of animated shows recently at their best.

Both "Jerk De Soleil" and "Toy to the World" are standouts of the early episodes of 'Phineas and Ferb'. It's hard to tell which is the better of the two, as both are equally brilliant. "Toy to the World" has the amazing atmosphere in the toy factory, JK Simmons voicing and manages to make what sounds dull on paper a quite complex episode. Meanwhile, "Jerk De Soleil" had one of the great 'Phineas and Ferb' songs and the memorable Perry and Doofenschmirtz subplot. So yeah tough to pick.

The animation is great in both "Jerk De Soleil" and "Toy to the World". The cirque setting definitely has the wow factor when it comes to the spectacle and some of it is remarkably ambitious. While "Toy to the World" has the toy company setting that is basically the toy version of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. The music is dynamic with the action and the theme song is insanely catchy with very clever and quotable lyrics that anybody still in school fishing for how to spend their vacation will relate to. As has been said already, "Jerk De Soleil" has one of my favourite 'Phineas and Ferb' songs "E.V.I.L B.O.Y.S" that Dan Povenmire sings the heck out of.

As to be expected from 'Phineas and Ferb', both episodes benefit from expert writing. They are equally wonderful on this front, very intelligent, never juvenile or confused and often very funny to hilarious. Anything that lampoons silly sales pitches and does it in an endearingly silly and hilarious way gets a good deal of respect, and that is something that "Toy to the World" does. The stories are just fine too and although the formula is recognisable both settings are done with such freshness and with such authentic atmosphere that it never feels repetitive. The Willy Wonka-like toy company setting is especially well done, with "Toy to the World" managing to bring intricacy to a premise that did sound potentially simplistic.

Did appreciate that Candace's allergies in "Jerk De Soleil" were handled tastefully and not in a mean spirited way. The Perry and Doofenschmirtz subplot in "Jerk De Soleil" is a lot more memorable than in "Toy to the World", the Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale-like dynamic being so much fun. All the main characters are nailed and JB is a lot of fun. The voice acting is all round great, Povenmire amuses with Candace's allergy-stricken voice and JK Simmons shows his versatility and comedic chops.

In conclusion, brilliant. 10/10

"Jerk De Soleil"

A solid episode. Not great but not bad. It still made me laugh and EVIL boys is a great song!

"Toy to the World"

Not the best episode, but certainly one of the more creative ones.
