If it doesn't disturb, is it art? This disturbs
larry-41113 March 2008
I attended the World Premiere of "A Necessary Death" at the 2008 SXSW Film Festival. This is a shocking and controversial feature from director Daniel Stamm.

To say that "A Necessary Death" defies description is an understatement. In fact, it's so unique that to say much more would spoil it. In "A Necessary Death," we follow a young filmmaker as he shoots a documentary about suicide. The kicker is that he actively solicits a subject who has already made plans to off himself and is willing to do it on camera.

For me, it's intensely personal. I lost a close friend to suicide about nine months ago and haven't really struggled with it as much as I'd expected to. I think I understand why he did what he did and the notion that someone taking their own life might be "justified" is something that is taboo in this society. This film breaks that taboo, and, in so doing, sheds some light on an issue which is so foreign to most people that they look at me with a mixture of disgust and wonder when I bring it up.

Needless to say, the film addresses issues of ethics, legality, and responsibility for the actions of others. The viewer's comfort level is tested as the film pushes the envelope of what's acceptable in cinema. The question is posed, "If it isn't disturbing, is it art?" "A Necessary Death" surely disturbs.

Excellent film, horrible marketing premise

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie at the SXSW film festival, and I found it to be a fascinating, nuanced examination of many interesting issues: the relationship between filmmaker and subject, the ethics of suicide, and much more...however, one thing about this film really makes me angry: It is essentially being marketed as a documentary, a la "Blair Witch Project", but it is in fact a work of fiction. This movie is good enough to stand on its own, but I guess for publicity purposes, they are trying to fool people into going to this movie thinking it is real--which cheapens the movie significantly.

I would recommend the film, but I hope that people realize going in that it is not a documentary--it is emotionally powerful enough without resorting to such cheap shock tactics.

Peculiar, Disturbing Film
JustCuriosity15 March 2008
A Necessary Death had its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, TX. It's hard to know what to think of a feature film that appears to be intentionally passing itself off to audiences as a documentary about the making of a student film on about a person planning to commit suicide. Much of the audience - myself included - was confused and thought that the film was an actual documentary. As a documentary, the project would be incredibly startling and disturbing.

As a feature film, the project is creative, but also a bit of gimmicky and somewhat emotional manipulative, because the audience feels like they are being shown something real which is really a complete work of fiction. If the film opens a wider debate about the ethics of suicide and, in this case, the ethics of the euthanasia, that may be positive, but its more likely to lead to a debate about the ethics of film making. Realistically, the film's approach so off-putting and confusing that it is unlikely to get much theatrical distribution. Also, the last third of the film and especially the ending seems a bit overly melodramatic. It feels like the writer/director made the film in an effort to get himself noticed in film circles by doing something creative and out-of-the-box.

Well, he has done that, but I'm not sure if the effort to confuse the line between fact and fiction is a healthy one or not. The film is entertaining, but also a bit disturbing in a way that doesn't necessarily seem particularly constructive. It is asking questions about the ethics of documentary film making, but it is unclear to this observer if they are questions that are particular important ones to ask or to answer.

Mixed feelings.
oscarscheepstra12 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I have a lot of mixed feelings about this film. It really felt as a documentary on the beginning. The characters are really good - and work pretty damn well. I only noticed they were actors on the middle of the film, after the mother's interview. A thing that annoyed me was the part between the mother's interview and his final decision. It just felt off - annoying footage that did not add anything to the story. It felt quite fake and silly, in fact. Some other things start to scream "CHEAP MOVIE". They could have worked more on some of the story lines, such as the sister's reaction. About the ending... Better than I expected. Made me swear quite a bit. But it also made me really like the movie again. I almost gave up on the boxers part (seriously, no movie but American pie should be talking about boxer shorts for more than 1 minute. This movie spend at least 20 on that stupidity). Great mock-documentary, with interesting songs. If it was a bit more polished it would be on my top 10.

good movie, but PREDICTABLE
asparks-962-66432130 March 2014
So when it comes to Daniel Stamm films, the first I saw was the Last Exorcism. I undervalued this film because I saw it in theaters (The only of Stamm's films to go to theaters) and because it was during the whole string of horribly made unoriginal "exorcism" movies. After watching again, it actually isn't that bad. His newest film "13 sins" is based off a foreign film but is by far his BEST and way better than the Last Exorcism and A Necessary Death.

Anyways, this review is about A Necessary Death (obviously). I definitely suggest a watch, because it is engrossing and gives an interesting fake documentary take on suicide in the genre of "horror." I said I would not include spoilers in this review, but the only place the movie fails is within the fact that a little over halfway through, you know EXACTLY how the film will end and the plot-twist/"oh wow" moment will unfold. Literally about 45 or 50 minutes into the movie, I said to myself, "Oh, well *this* (to avoid spoilers) will happen and the credits will roll." Sure enough, that it was exactly what happened. Overall an above average movie. Definitely worth a watch! Unfortunately, it is just PREDICTABLE. Like I said, give his newest film "13 sins" a chance and it is definitely his best piece to date.

its a shame movies like this don't get seen
mattrtilley24 October 2008
Saw this movie in Calagary and it just made me mad that you can have all the talent in the world but if you have no money it's almost impossible to get your work seen. Take "A Necessary Death" for example. These guys have worked on this movie for three years (probably for very little or no money) and have created something that they can confidently show to anyone, while other movies are made for millions and are an embarrassment! I believe they are showing it at AFI next month so I am hoping something happens for them as I will definitely be taking my friends to see it if it ever gets released. These are the type of movies that inspire young film makers to try harder because it proves that if you have what it takes you can create wonderful work with very little resources. And to think I wasn't even meant to see this movie during the festival. I just liked the name!!!

Thought provoking fantastic.
sarahmowat068318 March 2013
I don't want to say much because I really want people to watch it for themselves first. I just have to say I thought this was a fantastic piece of work and whilst a lot of people may say that this is bad taste, I think it's very honest and I respect that.

I'm not easily stunned or speechless but this film is an exception and addresses some very important topics that really need to be discussed more openly in this world. Maybe then, it would be understood much more. I would advise anyone wanting to watch this to help them deal with the topic surrounding this film, that it may not perhaps be ideal for some but may be for others. Everyone comes away with a different opinion .

Faux doc not that convincing
SnoopyStyle13 October 2013
Gilbert Toma (G.J. Echternkamp) is a film student looking to make a documentary on a suicidal person. It's an indie with indie budget. So we have to account for that. Even with that in mind, this is still a slow moving film. The only hope is to pretend that this is real. At least that would allow for some tension to seep thru.

But it's obvious that it's not. I've seen enough of these faux-docs. It rambles on in that kind of videotape footages. The people slowly and methodically do their documentary and talk about their documentary. It's not that compelling. The last 30 minutes has some interesting developments. I don't recommend this movie, but if you watch it, you might as well stay until the end.

Wow...Wow...Wow...
ranchgoddess201119 November 2013
I thought this was a real documentary...towards the end, there was some character flaws, didn't seem right somehow...but still believable! In fact, it was so believable that I actually came on the internet to see if this was real or not...

Well done!! Well done indeed. I wish I had thought of this myself. I can't believe I had not heard of this movie before and just happened to stumble on it on Netflix. I spent the whole time of the movie feeling sorry for Matt, and also the Mom for mortgaging her house for the movie. LOL

Brilliant!! A MUST SEE!!!

Thank you ( Contains Spoilers)

Warning: Spoilers
I came across this movie while looking for a movie with my husband. I have struggled with the thought of killing myself if something happened to my mother my whole life. My mom has now had 3 strokes and a heart attack and has vascular dementia. I'm agoraphobic and I can't handle seeing her now. I also have Borderline Personality Disorder which has a suicide rate of 15%. I have been dealing with this for 6 months and going over in my mind whether I will indeed kill myself. When I saw this movie I thought maybe seeing other people will show me that it is not the right choice for me. Imagine my surprise when I find out at the end that it is not a documentary and it breaks my heart that someone would make a movie like this that people like me might watch for help and then you find out it's not real. I feel like an idiot and a fool and it actually has swayed me to try for the 3rd time in my life to commit suicide. So I hope you made a lot of money off this film that will play on the weak. Kudos on controlling the "mental" population in the world

Was this movie necessary?
Mjl108416 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This is a movie that will stay with u long after u watch it. Which may not be a good thing... The acting was phenomenal. the characters were very genuine and earnest. I actually thought this movie was a real documentary up until about 3/4 of the way through, when I decided to look it up on the internet and found out it was an independent movie and thus, not true. Which I found to be a relief. and at the same time made me really appalled at the film itself. But I guess if a film has the capability to make you go through a whirlwind of emotions:sadness, anger, fear and amusement, I guess it is.... a necessary movie to see. It's definitely worth checking out!

A movie to remember forever.
rawrxtiffy15 August 2016
From the moment I seen it on Netflix, it's been stuck replaying in my head. It has so much emotion. I will always remember the last scene. It's truly the most amazing film I have ever seen. I've told everyone that has Netflix to take the time to watch it. Even now I have watched it over a year ago and I am up at 4AM thinking about it. It compelled me to write this review. Seriously, watch it. You will not forget it. It will take you through so many twists and turns. You think you will know what'll happen, then it'll shock you to your very core. It's like listening to a song that gives you chills. Trust me, it is time well spent.

Why?
meldavis991 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I understand I am a little late to the party on this one, and I'm relatively glad that I didn't see this until 10 years had passed since my own brother took his life (instead of just 4), because I would probably hold a lot more anger in my heart for those that made this film. When you live through something like that, you always have that notion of the hard reality of suicide lurking in the back of your head. A so-called documentary of a man's decision and final journey isn't a voyeuristic journey to you, it is maybe an answer. Maybe a little more understanding about something that blew a hole that will never heal through your family and through your life. You hope for a little more closure than you had before watching. Instead, you get an awfully- acted, completely scripted, contrived, pretentious piece of garbage that feels so good about itself because it tries to bring some kind of awareness to the dark and uncomfortable subject of suicide? I'm guessing that is the point? But it's also why I ask why. Why was this produced?

I'm giving a benefit of the doubt here and will go on this: perhaps the director, writer or producer was personally affected by suicide, and this is a coping mechanism (although it seems really unlikely, given the mess they created). If that's the case, I'll give them a pass. Everyone deals with their own demons. If that's what they needed to do, then so be it. I guess maybe it raises some awareness? Doesn't seem like it to me, but maybe it reaches some people.

However, if they are trying to bring some kind of awareness to a subject they are pretty clueless about (which kinda seems to be the issue), then they should realize they created an insulting piece of trash that does nothing to even try to create an understanding on such a painful subject, and completely succeed in sucking any kind of substance out of a person who would contemplate such an end to his or her own life. I mean, really.

Boo. Hiss. I can't believe this film had such positive reviews. Why?

A good film, but off-putting ending.
mattrth5 July 2012
A short premise is a film crew are making a documentary about suicide, and they are following someone around, documenting the persons final days being alive, showing how this person lives, getting to know the person, the persons family, reasons why, etc. All up until their final act, suicide. The film is made as a 'found footage' film, or made to look as real as possible.

I think there were some 'twists' added into the flow of the story that weren't needed. Ones that made it seem as more of a 'theatrical' story. Some of them were a bit mediocre, and just in my opinion, could have been left out to make the film flow a bit better.

The one thing that really threw my train of thought off, was the ending. I won't spoil the ending they used, and please don't look up detailed info on the film if you are planning on seeing it/buying it. But the ending they used in the final cut of the film, was unnecessary and was again, a bit 'theatrical', which put me off, and my reaction would have been a lot better if they hadn't used it. It took away from the 'real' feeling the film is supposed to give. I say this because, on the DVD, there is an alternate ending. The alternate ending should have been the final ending of the film, not the one they used. The alternate ending made a much better end to the story and film, and made much more sense.

Overall, I do recommend seeing this, just don't read too much on it, some things may get a bit ruined if you do.
