In the late '90s, the horror genre was arguably desolate in the West, with the once popular teen-slasher flicks nearing extinction and the inception of future franchises like Saw and Paranormal Activity still a ways off. Meanwhile, across the globe in Japan, a new wave of horror was emerging, devoid of humor and steeped in darkness.
Takashi Shimazu's Ju-On (better known in North America as The Grudge) led the J-Horror charge. Two decades on, it can be daunting for new viewers seeking to delve into the mythos of what has become an extended franchise that includes a whopping 13 feature films, multiple shorts, and even a TV series. There is, however, a viewing order in which most entries can be seen as part of the larger storytelling tapestry.

2009 is not exactly a year that horror fans remember fondly. What came out that year? Off the top of the head, not much comes up. A quick search gives us The Unborn, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, and Drag Me to Hell. Depending on who you ask, these range from ok movies to Drag Me to Hell, but not exactly memorable overall. Something happened at the end of the 2000s and horror didn’t give us much to work with for some reason. If we dig, we get better titles like The Collector, Laid to Rest, and Paranormal Activity, but their box office ranged from amazing in the case of Paranormal Activity to almost nonexistent for the others, so it was completely hit or miss, like studios didn’t know what to push and what to keep for the home video market. Another movie that had a lot of potential...

Kyle Edward Ball's Skinamarink is a frightful marriage of primal fears and video experimentation. The film immerses the viewer in an ominous environment with long sequences of silence and shadow disrupted by flashes of light and explosive bursts of sound. The camera angles are odd, and the images are disturbing. Skinamarink channels David Lynch with its unnerving exploration of minute details. The household's disruption echoes Mark Z. Danielewski's surreal novel The House of Leaves.
With its plot, Skinamarink references Tobe Hooper's Poltergeist and the Paranormal Activity franchise. In its technique, the film calls to mind The Blair Witch Project, another groundbreaking movie that divided audiences. However viewers might feel about the director's style and methods, Skinamarink has many shocking moments to terrify horror fans.

Blumhouse Productions -- the studio that has become synonymous with franchises such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, David Gordon Green's Halloween trilogy, and one-off projects like Damien Chazelle's Whiplash and Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman -- has often padded its output with lower-budget horror fare that requires looking at IMDb to make heads or tails of what's what. For every potential franchise or awards nominee, some films beguile and baffle in equal measure, dollar-bin movies requiring a savvy spelunker to find the real treasures. For all of their interchangeable homogeneity, these smaller projects can still and often offer the stumbled-upon detail that sticks to the ribs.
Jeff Wadlow's Imaginary is the latest theatrical release to bear the Blumhouse name in partnership with Lionsgate. Its box office success will likely dictate potential offshoots, of which there is a prerequisite ass-covering in the film's finale should there be more in the ImaginaryVerse.

Blumhouse has churned out some critical and commercial hits, yet continues on a losing streak with a sloppily put together horror about an imaginary friend
It’s yet another sub-par day at the Blumhouse factory, production line operating at full, breakneck speed, yet machinery on the perilous verge of total collapse. The house of horror, behind hit franchises like Insidious, Paranormal Activity and The Purge, has become something of a franchise in itself, a branded string of low-budget films making a high profit, yet quality control has forever been an issue and in the last year or so, it’s barely existed.
On the first cursed weekend of January 2023, usually home to the most unintentionally horrifying horror films, M3gan upended critical expectations and scored reviews as impressive as its box office total. A new Paranormal Activity videogame, from the creator of The Mortuary Assistant, has been announced. It should be ready in 2026.
The Paranormal Activity films have been terrorising audiences with their ambient, low-res hauntings for 17 years, and now it’s getting a videogame adaptation from designer Brian Clarke and DarkStone Digital.
Clarke previously made the 2022 horror game The Mortuary Assistant, which quickly went viral thanks to its found-footage-style scares. Interestingly, Clarke was directly inspired by Paranormal Activity when he made the game, so being commissioned to make an official adaptation brings things neatly full-circle.
“The success of the Paranormal Activity franchise epitomises the power and reach of the horror genre,” Clarke said in a statement shared with Gamespot. “If you thought The Mortuary Assistant was scary, we’re taking what we learned during the development of that title and cranking it up with a more reactive and horrifying haunting system. It’s going to be intense!

Producer Jason Blum had said the Paranormal Activity franchise went dormant for a while after the release of 2015’s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension because he felt the series had gotten tired – and it wasn’t his idea to make Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, a failed attempt at a revival (that he described as “terrible”), back in 2021. He has been open about the fact that he feels there has been “enough already” when it comes to Paranormal Activity movies. But that doesn’t mean the franchise can’t continue in other ways. A few months back, we heard there’s a stage play in development, and now Variety has broken the news that a Paranormal Activity video game will be released in 2026!

Found footage is one of the most popular subgenres of horror. Still, while some films like The Blair With Project, Paranormal Activity, and Cloverfield found great success, one entry, Megan Is Missing, was overlooked by the general public. Only the most hardcore horror fans saw it when it was released in 2011. However, during the pandemic, the movie got a second wind when it became a viral TikTok trend. Writer and director Michael Goi's film was actually filmed in 2006 at the cost of a mere $35,000, and the low-budget nature worked to its benefit. Where other found footage movies were about witches, ghosts, and monsters, Megan Is Missing is something darker because of how real it feels. It tells the story of 14-year-old Megan Stewart (Rachel Quinn) and her best friend Amy Herman (Amber Perkins) as they start talking with a boy online who isn't who he says he is. When both girls disappear,...

Sylvester Stallone will be heading to Philadelphia again for The Epiphany, a new serial killer thriller: more here.

Low-budget horror films have historically faced challenges in proving their worth, but some have become massive hits that exceeded expectations. Films like The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, and Get Out used creative storytelling and effective execution to overcome perceptions of inadequate quality. These micro-funded projects have reshaped horror history by capturing fan adoration, influencing generations, and showcasing that true creativity doesn't require a large budget.

The best horror movies keep their villains unseen, using reactions and storytelling to create a more terrifying image. Films like Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project prove the efficacy of keeping the villain just out of reach. Movies like Skinamarink and Bird Box leave the villain unseen, creating a sense of fear and the unknown.
The best horror movies know better than to reveal their hand, weaponizing their audience's fear of the unknown against them. In fact, the exact opposite can sometimes be true, with some horror movies ruined by revealing their monster.

The official MPA rating has arrived this week, signaling that the horror release is just around the corner.
Late Night with the Devil has been rated “R” for…
“Violent content, some gore, and language including a sexual reference.”
That might not be too surprising for those that have been following along with news on this possession shocker. David Dastmalchian stars as Jack Delroy, the charismatic host of “Night Owls,” and the film traces the ill-fated taping of a live Halloween special in 1977 plagued by a demonic presence.
IFC Films & Shudder will release Late Night with the Devil theatrically on March 22 before it heads to Shudder exclusively on April 19, 2024.

The century-old Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado is the inspiration behind Stephen King’s classic horror novel “The Shining,” and we’ve learned that Blumhouse aims to create a “true horror destination” within the iconic setting. Read on for everything we know.
Governor Jared Polis and the Colorado Office of Film, Television and Media, a division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (Oedit), announced that Blumhouse, the driving force in horror, will exclusively curate a 10,000+ square-foot Stanley Film Center exhibit space.
“Here’s Blumhouse! This iconic Colorado hotel will now have a new element of fun and fright for Coloradans and visitors across the world to enjoy, driving tourism and strengthening our economy. I look forward to seeing the exhibit and am happy that our administration can help make this possible,” said Governor Polis.

The idea of found footage as a filmmaking technique stretches back to at least 1961 with the release of Shirley Clarke's relatively obscure drama "The Connection." The found footage style was used to present scripted material as if it were documentary footage, employing a lot of shaky, handheld camera work and extemporaneous-sounding dialogue. The term "found footage" sprung from a common conceit of the style, which often implied that something horrible had happened to the filmmakers that prevented them from assembling and editing their footage. Once their footage was found, it was edited by a third party and presented in the theater.
There were many found footage films from 1961 until 2007, but the release and overwhelming success of Oren Peli's "Paranormal Activity" sparked a years-long wave of the format, with most of its glory-chasers employing horror as their baseline. Late 2000s found footage horror was largely effective, as it often...

The Paranormal Activity franchise features a complicated timeline that includes sequels, prequels, and parallel installments, making it difficult to follow the exact order of events. The 2021 film, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, serves as a soft reboot and introduces a new demonic entity named Asmodeus, while the upcoming film, The Other Side, returns to the core story and continues from where Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension left off. The films are not released in chronological order, but instead jump between different years and decades, adding to the complexity of the timeline.
Oren Peli’s supernatural found-footage horror film Paranormal Activity spawned a franchise that included seven movies, so the Paranormal Activity timeline needs some explaining. The films follow the history of two sisters named Katie and Kristi who are tormented by a demonic entity, "Toby." As the franchise expanded with sequels, prequels, and parallel installments, the exact timeline of events remains complicated.

Jason Blum is preparing to expand his horror empire into the museum world.
The CEO of Blumhouse, who has produced horror hits ranging from “Paranormal Activity” to “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” has announced plans to develop a horror exhibit at the the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. The hotel famously served as Stephen King’s inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in “The Shining,” as the author stayed at the Stanley shortly before writing his seminal horror novel that inspired Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film.
The hotel, which opened in 1909, will now be home to the Stanley Film Center, an ongoing horror exhibit curated by Blumhouse in collaboration with the Colorado Office of Film, Television and Media.

Perhaps the biggest reason why the ghost story has enjoyed such popularity and power for so long is because it lies at the crux of some of humanity's most fundamental mysteries. For one thing, it addresses the question of life after death in a way that doesn't require belief in pearly gates or eternal hellfire, as it presupposes the existence of the soul. After all, if a person's energy can change the mood of a room, can't that same energy exist independently of a body and remain noticeable? Additionally, the total unknowability of ghosts is at once a source of fear and melancholy: if such entities exist, we can't know for sure what their intentions are, and if we might be facing such a fate, wouldn't such constraints as having no body and no voice be remarkably frustrating and lonely?
Steven Soderbergh's latest feature, "Presence," addresses these concepts in a remarkably effective fashion.

Found footage horror movies are a dime a dozen, but they can still produce some of the scariest moments in horror. Whether set in a single bedroom or the vastness of the Maryland woods, plenty of the best horror movies can be found in the found footage genre.
One underrated found footage movie is the sci-fi horror film "Apollo 18." Released in 2011 and directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego from a script by Brian Miller, the film asks one question — why did we stop going to the moon? Rather than budget cuts and a lack of public interest in the space program, "Apollo 18" imagines a fictionalized version of the canceled Apollo 18 mission that quickly descends into terror and death. In the film, a trio of astronauts heading to the moon in 1974 learn their mission is not to study moon rocks or even Soviet missiles, but a recently-discovered alien species living on the moon.

What are the highest grossing horror movies of all time? More specifically, what are the highest grossing horror franchises of all time? On the list of the Top 20, only Five franchises in the history of the genre have crossed the $1 billion mark. Can you guess which ones?
Franchises including The Purge, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Final Destination, The Exorcist, Insidious and Halloween are some of the biggest of all time, but even they haven’t yet been able to crack that massive billion dollar milestone. Other franchises including Paranormal Activity and Scream come even closer, but haven’t yet crossed over into the billions.
The only horror franchises to hit $1 billion, you ask?

Found footage films are usually at their best when they keep the authenticity high and the complexity low, with the best of the best found footage movies favoring chilling simplicity above all else. The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity are two of the all-time greats for a reason, both stripped down, low-budget found footage efforts that still terrify to this day.
Filmmaker Dutch Marich has been tapping into those vibes with his own bone chilling found footage franchise, which kicked off with Horror in the High Desert in 2021 and now continues this year with sequel Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva. David Gordon Green's "Halloween" trilogy made a lot of spooky coin for the folks at Blumhouse Productions, so it seemed like a no-brainer that the director would be the one to take the reins on a new trilogy of films based on "The Exorcist." The House that Blum Built spent a pretty penny obtaining the rights to the legendary horror film, which meant there was a lot riding on Dgg's first film, "The Exorcist: Believer," to prove this was a prime investment. While the film fortunately brought in over $137 million at the box office against a reported $30 million budget, this doesn't take into consideration the money spent on an aggressive marketing campaign, the astronomical amount they spent for the rights, and lackluster reviews from critics and audiences alike.
The future of the trilogy — with the follow-up film already titled "The Exorcist: Deceiver" — looked grim, but now it seems...

Horror movies are, for all intents and purposes, a license to print money. Notoriously cheap to make with a built-in audience, a horror film doesn’t need to make much in order to turn a profit. And, if the studio is lucky and/or smart, a unicorn arrives that rakes in the cash, à la The Blair Witch Project or Paranormal Activity. Yet there’s a decided marketing edge with the addition of five simple words: Based on a True Story. It’s bad enough when a film scares your pants off, but that added element that it happened in real life? Or, even worse, it's still happening? That means... shiver... it could happen to you. Sweet dreams.

“Night Swim,” a supernatural thriller produced by horror mavens Jason Blum and James Wan, waded to second place in its debut. The film, marking the first nationwide release of the year, collected a moderate $12 million from 3,200 North American theaters.
Those ticket sales weren’t enough to topple “Wonka,” which claimed first place again with $14.4 million in its fourth weekend of release. “Night Swim” didn’t make a splash at the international box office with just $5.7 million from 36 markets, bringing its global tally to $17.7 million. The film cost $15 million, so it doesn’t have a high bar for profitability.
That’s probably a relief to Universal because neither audiences nor critics were fond of “Night Swim,” which holds a dismal 27% on Rotten Tomatoes and landed a “C” CinemaScore. It follows a family who finds out that an otherwordly presence haunts the backyard swimming pool in their new home. “Night Swim” the...

“Night Swim,” a supernatural thriller about a ghost-plagued pool, is attempting to start the 2024 box office with a splash.
The Universal Pictures film, which marks the year’s first nationwide release, is targeting a debut of $9 million to $11 million from 3,200 North American theaters. It’s a decent start for the $15 million-budgeted movie, which won’t face competition on the horror front until March’s haunted-teddy-bear-inspired “Imaginary.”
“Night Swim,” written and directed by Bryce McGuire and starring Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon, follows a family who finds out that an otherwordly presence haunts the backyard swimming pool in their new home. Reviews rarely correlate to ticket sales with horror, which is good because Variety’s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman criticized “Night Swim” as “too familiar and derivative — and too PG-13.”

The merger between Jason Blum’s company Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster is complete, Blum announced on January 2.
“Our deal is …. Done,” the producer wrote on X. “@blumhouse and #AtomicMonster have officially joined forces. The preeminent homes for horror are now under one roof.” Blum shared the news along with a sizzle reel mashing up both companies’ biggest brands, from “Get Out” to “The Purge” to “Paranormal Activity” on the Blumhouse end and “The Conjuring,” “Aquaman,” and more on the Atomic Monster end.
Boasting that they’re the “preeminent homes for horror” is right. Wan and Blumhouse’s horror movies have brought in more than $8.5 billion in box office since between 2004 and November 2022 when the advanced merger talks were first announced. Their combined companies also include the “Halloween,” “Happy Death Day,” “Insidious, “Annabelle,” “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” and “The Exorcist” franchises.

Jason Blum’s Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster, the two preeminent production companies working in horror, have completed their long awaited merger, Blum announced on Tuesday.
“Our deal is …. Done. @blumhouse and #AtomicMonster have officially joined forces,” the producer wrote on X, in a message accompanied by a reel showcasing both companies’ libraries. “The preeminent homes for horror are now under one roof.”
The merger news comes just ahead of release of Night Swim, the supernatural horror pic marking the feature directorial debut of Bryce McGuire, which is produced by both companies. Starring Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon, the film hits theaters via Universal Pictures on January 5th. Previously teaming on last year’s horror hit M3GAN, the companies were first reported as being in advanced talks to merge in November 2022.

What he and Kevin created is something amazing and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.”

Horror movies can occasionally float just above the "average" line when it comes to cinematic quality. They're considered more of an "entertainment" genre than anything else. Only a few horror standalone movies and franchises have managed to establish themselves as a quality product of good writing, direction, and execution. In the horror genre, franchises like Paranormal Activity have established a solid fan base by playing with the worst possible human fears of the unknown and out-of-the-box ideas. Paranormal Activity redefined the found-footage trope after The Blair Witch Project and became a prominent club member even though it wasn't as iconic as The Exorcist or The Conjuring.
However, the franchise did develop a cult following with its surprisingly accurate portrayal of human anxieties related to what might happen around the house when everyone is in a deep eight-hour night's sleep. Almost every person who watched Paranormal Activity must have thought about...

The state of horror in 2023 is strong. Familiar names such as Brandon Cronenberg and Eli Roth returned with "Infinity Pool" and "Thanksgiving" and so did "Re-Animator" screenwriter Dennis Paoli, writer of "Suitable Flesh," his first realized feature script in over 20 years. Old franchises returned, too, with "Evil Dead Rise" and even "Saw X" doing well critically and commercially. Less established filmmakers have also made an impression, namely Nahnatchka Khan, director of "Totally Killer," and Danish debut filmmaker Gabriel Bier Gislason, who helmed "Attachment."
But away from "M3GAN," "When Evil Lurks" and the numerous other highlights, there were still some disappointments that were lackluster, recycled, underplayed, overplayed, or in one or two cases, just underwhelming in almost every aspect of production. There is little pleasure to be had in chronicling such disappointment, but it is a service any critic must provide at one time or another. So let's dig into some...

Gary Dauberman had a good thing going at Warner Bros. for several years. He worked on the screenplays for the company’s two-part adaptation of Stephen King’s novel It, scripted the Conjuring Universe films Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, and The Nun, co-created the 2019 Swamp Thing TV show, and wrote and directed Annabelle Comes Home. But then he wrote and directed an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Salem’s Lot for the company… and two years after principal photography wrapped, they still haven’t figured out what they want to do with his Salem’s Lot. So it’s no surprise that Dauberman is now set up at a different company. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Dauberman has signed a first-look deal with Sony’s Screen Gems for feature films. He is expected to “create projects for himself while curating a slate featuring established and up-and-coming filmmakers.”
