- In 1976, Gilberto Gil traveled to Lagos (Nigeria) with the purpose of participating in the Second Festival of Black Art and Culture. The event had the participation of approximately fifty thousand Afro-descendant and Diaspora artists. After the trip, Gil released the album Refavela. The documentary celebrates the 40th anniversary of this album essential album for the Brazilian Popular Music.
- REFAVELA 40 revisits Gilberto Gil's historic 1977 record "Refavela", inspired by the artist's experience at the World Festival of Black Arts, held in Nigeria. The feature presents several unseen testimonies as well as archive images and it has, amongst its guests, the presence of Rubão Sabino, bass player; Robertinho Silva, drummer; and Djalma Corrêa, percussionist, all of whom accompanied the singer on his tour through Africa. Other guests include producer Dom Filó, anthropologist Hermano Vianna, songwriter Paulinho Camafeu, and singer and songwriter Bem Gil, in conversations with Roberto Santana, "Refavela" producer, and Gilberto Gil himself about the record's unforgettable classics, such as "Ilê Ayê" and "Sandra". The documentary also includes the 2017 concert at Concha Acústica in Salvador, part of a tour that commemorated the famous record.—HBO Latin America
