The CNN Originals hub debuted on Discovery+ on Friday, as the new home for the news channel’s streaming library following the abrupt closure of CNN+.
The hub was announced earlier this month, and features over 800 episodes of content from CNN Original Series, CNN Films, and Hln Original Series. Additional content will be added after their linear run on the CNN cable networks.
Some of the original content that appeared on CNN+ has popped up elsewhere. The documentary The Last Movie Stars, about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, debuted this summer on HBO Max. Chris Wallace’s talk show, one of the marquee offerings, will return in September on CNN on Sunday nights and on HBO Max.
Among the original library titles offered on the new hub are 1968: The Year That Changed America, American Dynasties: The Kennedys, American Style, Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (Seasons 1-12), The Bush Years: Family, Duty, Power,...

Starting today, Discovery+ subscribers will have access to many of CNN’s most popular evergreen television series, including popular food shows “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” and “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy” and documentaries like “The History of Comedy” and “Diana.” The series can be found under a new CNN Originals hub on Discovery+, the latest addition to the popular documentary-heavy streaming service.
Since WarnerMedia and Discovery merged to become Warner Bros. Discovery earlier this year, CEO David Zaslav has made the consolidation of the conglomerate’s streaming services a top priority. One of his first moves was to scrap CNN+, a streaming service that the company had invested over 100 million into, just a month after it launched. CNN+ primarily focused on content made by CNN personalities that was not strictly news-related. Stanley Tucci’s next trip to Italy will face a slight delay.
CNN will bump the debuts of a handful of looming original documentary projects due to its ongoing coverage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The second season of “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy,” will premiere on CNN later in the spring, as will the new series “Nomad with Carlton McCoy.” Meanwhile, the WarnerMedia network will push back the debut of “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” to Sunday March 13 at 9 p.m., a week later than its previously scheduled March 6 launch.
The network has built a new business out of documentaries and docuseries, but it must balance those projects with the demands of the news cycle.
During the height of the coronavirus pandemic, CNN found itself delaying a new season of W. Kamau Bell’s “United Shades of America” at least twice. And the network pushed back the...

Eleven months in to 2021, and Warner Bros. movie streaming strategy on HBO Max is still going strong. Now the list of new releases for November 2021 on HBO Max is highlighted by yet another big ticket film.
King Richard, starring Will Smith, is set to arrive on HBO Max and in theaters on Nov. 19. November is a good month for saying goodbye on HBO Max. The streaming platform will host the final 2021 episodes of HBO late-night staples “Real Time with Bill Maher” and the Emmy Award-winning “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the season finales of Max originals “Love Life” and “Doom Patrol,” and also provide home viewers their last opportunity to watch “Dune” on HBO Max until sometime in 2022 (“Dune” leaves HBO Max on November 21).
But beyond those conclusions, there are some huge premieres as well: Oscar contender “King Richard” arrives on November 19 with Will Smith in the lead role, the back-half of “Gossip Girl” Season 1 will make its debut at some point, and the HBO Music Box series continues with the Alanis Morrisette documentary “Jagged” (which the singer roundly criticized) and a new feature on Dmx. All of that content, plus a number of library classics, including but not limited to “Moonstruck,...

The producers behind CNN’s new eight-part docuseries “History of the Sitcom” knew that trying to tell the complete 70-year history of the TV genre would be an impossible task. So they divided some of the biggest comedies of all time into specific categories — and set out to illustrate how the evolution of the sitcom mirrored real-life advancements in society.
“It was pretty apparent that given the number of sitcoms that have been out there in history that you couldn’t do some sort of comprehensive, start-to-finish history, as though you were in a college course studying it from beginning to end,” says executive producer Bill Carter. “There had to be a way to categorize them and follow them according to some grouping. We have eight episodes; we could have done at least 80.”

When it comes to its original series, CNN has long found a sweet spot in politics and pop culture. Whether the subject is late night TV (The Story of Late Night), or a presidential run (Race for the White House), the channel has continued to expand its slate in those genres.
CNN’s new 2021-2022 slate continues that trend, but it also notably expands into new genres: Specifically into natural history programming with a show called Patagonia (like you would find on the BBC or, yes Discovery Channel), and an expansion of the travel-food-culture programming with Nomad with Carlton McCoy, a genre that began ...
