Did justice to the stage version
I saw the original London production and also the recent Broadway revival and I had misgivings about the movie, but I must say that the film version does justice to the play. And it brings this great work of art to a much wider audience. Since I was used to operatic voices it took a little getting used to the lighter, more "pop" style, but once I got beyond that the strength of the music came through. Now that this Sondheim work is in the mainstream and "Into the Woods" is a staple of high school musicals, perhaps more of this master of musical theater will find a lot of new fans. I hope so because his work is brilliant and deserves to be more widely appreciated.
