Japanese anime maestro Makoto Shinkai’s latest feature Suzume shot to the top of China’s theatrical box office over the weekend, earning a strong $50 million, the biggest start for a non-Chinese film this year. The performance underscores the growing potency of Japanese anime in China’s huge movie market at a time when Hollywood superhero fare has been fizzling.
Suzume is currently projected to finish its run at around $90 million, according to projections from local ticketing service Maoyan. That would be the biggest performance ever by a Japanese animated feature.
The Hollywood studios, meanwhile, have stumbled in China in 2023. Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever earned just $15.6 million (compared to the first Black Panther‘s $105 million haul) and Ant-Man 3 took only $39 million (Ant-man 2 had $121 million). Warner Bros’ Shazam! 2 has brought in a disappointing $5.6 million (versus $44 million for the original Shazam!), while Unversal’s horror hit M3GAN...

Japanese animation film “Suzume” made just shy of $50 million on its opening weekend in mainland Chinese theaters.
Data from consultancy Artisan Gateway, shows “Suzume” grabbing the top spot at the box office with $49.6 million (RMB342 million) between Friday and Sunday.
That is the biggest opening score by any film this year outside of the Chinese New Year holiday week in late January. The next best is “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” which opened with $19.4 million in mid-February.
Directed by Shinkai Makoto, “Suzume” was a hit in Japan where it was released late last year and has remained on screens for a $105 million total. It played in February at the Berlin Film Festival, where it came away largely empty-handed, but has subsequently performed strongly in the Asian territories where it has released.

From “All the President’s Men” to “Spotlight,” American films that valorize those ethically uncompromising reporters who have gone above and beyond, often at significant personal cost, in pursuit of stories of intense public interest, are not uncommon. So it’s more than a little ironic that in 2020, when the fourth estate’s influence is under greater attack, and its trustworthiness under greater suspicion, than ever in the U.S., the most impassioned and urgent drama in its defense should come from China, not a country traditionally known for its press freedoms.
But while it may feel dubious to be celebrating even a historical achievement in Beijing journalism in an era when so many journalists languish in the nation’s prisons, the message of admiration for professional perseverance and integrity delivered by director Wang Jing’s debut is acutely valuable at this moment, wherever in the world you are. Beggars for...

There are still idealistic young writers out there aiming to transform the world, at least in China, and the newsroom drama The Best Is Yet to Come (Bu zhi bu xiu) catches the viewer up in the fast-paced story of an untutored youth from the provinces who breaks a scoop on hepatitis B. It’s entertaining to see made-in-Hollywood genre codes from All the President’s Men to The Post reworked in the exotic setting of a big Beijing daily during the heyday of print journalism, in a country one normally doesn’t associate with investigative reporting. Wang Jing’s rousing directing debut, shot in rough ...

The Toronto International Film Festival has announced its 2020 lineup of 50 new features, a dramatically smaller selection than last year, where the typically stuffed festival hosted more than 300 titles. Nevertheless, the festival program — which is expected to take place as a combination of virtual screenings and physical premieres, but no press and industry — features plenty of recognizable names.
As previously announced, Spike Lee’s “David Byrne’s American Utopia” will open the festival, which today announced it will close with a special presentation Mira Nair’s latest, the miniseries “A Suitable Boy,” based on Vikram Seth’s novel of the same name.
Chloe Zhao’s Francis McDormand-starring “Nomadland,” already set for a starry festival run, will screen at the festival, joining previously announced titles like Francis Lee’s “Ammonite,” Vinterberg’s Mads Mikkelsen drama “Another Round,” Ricky Staub’s Idris Elba vehicle “Concrete Cowboy,” Mexican-Canadian director Nicolas Pereda’s “Fauna,” Reinaldo Marcus Green...

While the coronavirus pandemic has canceled major festivals such as Cannes and Telluride, the 2020 Venice Film Festival is moving ahead as planned and will be the world’s first major film festival since Sundance and Berlin at the start of the year. Venice 2020’s main selection will be split into three sections: Venezia 77 (aka the main competition), Out of Competition, and Horizons. The titles selected for the main competition will compete for the Golden Lion, which was awarded last year to Todd Phillips’ “Joker.”
As previously announced, Daniele Luchetti’s drama “Lacci” will open the 77th Venice Film Festival on September 2. The movie is the first Italian title to open Venice in 11 years. The last Italian opener was Giuseppe Tornatore’s “Baarìa” at the 2009 festival. “Lacci” is included in this year’s Out of Competition section. Chloe Zhao’s “The Rider” follow-up “Nomadland” was also confirmed for a world premiere...
