It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

Along with creating “The Wire,” David Simon has been a self-described “lifelong union man” as a member of the Newspaper Guild and the Writers Guild of America, and as the WGA strike continues, he made it clear how little he thinks the entertainment industry’s top execs respect him and his peers.
“The truth is, there has always been a healthy contempt for the creative element in this industry, not on the part of everybody, and I’ve had good relationships with people at the studios and certainly there have been moments in my career where I’ve been very grateful for working with somebody who understood the complexity of what we were trying to do,” Simon said on “Freakonomics” author Steve Levitt’s podcast “People I (Mostly) Admire.”

Sandra Oh spent a decade in scrubs as the fierce, brilliant surgeon Dr. Cristina Yang on ABC’s long-running “Grey’s Anatomy.” Now her turn as the equally complex spy Eve Polastri in BBC’s “Killing Eve,” from “Fleabag” creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, is earning her raves along with awards buzz. “It’s great to be back working, great to be fully in,” Oh says.
Waller-Bridge writes so well for women. How rare is that?
Rare and not rare. As you know, there are so many wonderful writers. It’s very difficult to get a show on the air, and I’ve been really lucky. I’ve worked with a lot of great writers. There are many really good writers who can write character, who can write plot, but what is really rare is finding a unique voice. And Phoebe has a unique voice.
How did you find your way into this character?...

But unlike that infamously botched Pepsi ad, a product with this name doesn’t actually exist, and likely never will, thankfully.

Makerbot Industries and its founders Bre Pettis, Adam Mayer, and Zach Hoeken Smith seem to be the focus of the documentary, with eventual attention given to the company’s rivals as they arose over the years. Some key themes brought up in the trailer which are likely to be revealed in greater detail in the documentary are the ground-breaking aspects of 3D printing (like being able to make human organ implants, which could revolutionize the medical community), as well as its dangerous consequences (like users printing off...

Alex Gibney's film We Steal Secrets is the first WikiLeaks documentary out of the gate – but it nearly didn't happen. The prolific film-maker talks Assange, Bradley Manning and paranoia
Had things worked out differently, Alex Gibney and Julian Assange could have been soulmates – instead, they've ended up more as enemies. Gibney is one of the most prolific documentary-makers of today, and his films often take the perspective of the victim or antihero. As such, Assange was hard to resist. "Here's this tremendously romantic figure travelling the world with a laptop in his knapsack, exposing abuses of power," says Gibney. "That sounds like a pretty good story to me."
He's not the only one: the saga of WikiLeaks, the group's part in exposing Us atrocities in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the subsequent sexual charges levelled at Assange, is one of the biggest of our era. It's a real-life, 21st-century spy...

The Us war on drugs has cost one trillion dollars and resulted in 45m arrests. And yet nothing has changed, argues film-maker Eugene Jarecki, a polemical campaigner to reform America's drugs laws. So what did the prisoners in a New York jail think when he showed them his documentary?
Once consigned to the fringes of libertarianism, the argument for the legalisation of drugs has received an unlikely boost in America in recent months with the release of a documentary entitled The House I Live In. Coinciding with the decision by the states of Colorado and Washington to legalise marijuana, the film won the Grand Jury prize at the Sundance film festival last year and has arrived at a moment when Americans are beginning to reconsider the efficacy of their nation's drug policy.

Like I said last week, Twilight : Breaking Dawn Part 2 was bound to have such a massive opening box office weekend that it would soar above Skyfall and finally knock Bond back into second place. Wait, no, don’t go and check back, just trust me, that’s definitely what I said. Honestly.
With £15.85 million taken in its opening three days, the latest Twilight has the highest opening gross of any film in the franchise thus far. Bond experienced his sharpest drop off yet, down 47% on its third week takings, but even with the expected gradual decline in the coming weeks, it still looks set to overtake Avatar’s record box-office haul of £94million given that in just four weeks it has already managed to bank a cool £82million.

Last week, I went into New York for a 30-minute chat with Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, the young documentary filmmaking team responsible for several of the most acclaimed docs of the 21st century: The Boys of Baraka (2005), which follows inner-city American schoolchildren who wind up at a boarding school in Kenya; Jesus Camp (2006), which is about the instructors and kids at a summer camp for Evangelical children and was nominated for the best documentary feature Oscar; Freakonomics (2010), which is an adaptation of the popular book of the same title about human behavior; 12th and

When Steven Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner published 2005's Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores The Hidden Side Of Everything, many took it for just a collection of essays on outside-the-box views on practical economics, espoused by a couple of guys who disagreed on how best to spell their shared first name. Seven years, one sequel, a blog, a podcast, and a feature film later, it’s clear that Freakonomics is, in fact, an ever-replicating entertainment machine that means to sink its tendrils into every medium available to 21st-century man. But with Philip Glass probably still blocked on Freakonomics: The ...

NBC has bought Pariah, a drama project from Lionsgate Television and Kelsey Grammer’s Grammnet Prods. Written by Kevin Fox (The Negotiator, Law & Order: Svu), the police procedural features characters inspired by the economic theory ‘Freakonomics’ made popular by authors/economists Steven Levitt & Stephen Dubner. In Pariah, the Mayor of San Diego appoints a rogue academic with no law enforcement background to run a task force using Freakonomics-inspired alternative methods of policing. This causes an uproar within the police department as the morally conflicted, conspiracy-minded academic solves crimes by conducting his controversial experiments on citizens of the city. Grammer and Grammnet’s Stella Stolper and Brian Sher will executive produce, with Levitt and Dubner attached as producers. The project extends Grammnet’s relationship with Lionsgate — the two companies also co-produce the Grammer-starring Starz drama Boss. Grammnet, whose head of development Brian Taylor has spearheaded Pariah, and Levitt & Dubner are repped by Wme.

The Weinstein Company officially announced their plans to launch a VOD label. Deadline reports that TWC have hired Tom Quinn and Jason Janego to run it. This makes sense to me as VOD continues to grow as a way to make money for studios on films that are not a good choice for a wide theatrical release.

Chicago – Fans who enjoyed the new comedy series “Breaking In” and feared the show wouldn’t last longer than the seven episode first season need not worry. Larry Gross will write Turbulent Souls adapted from Stephen J. Dubner's memoir. The Group Entertainment's production is based on the 1998 book originally called Turbulent Souls, now being titled as Choosing My Religion. In the memoir, Dubner, who is the co-writer of Freakonomics, recounts the time he learned of his family's Jewish roots after being raised as a Catholic. After embracing his past, this led to a split with his mother which had the archbishop of New York involved in order to resolve the issue. Gross wrote the script for 48 Hours, True Crime and We Don't Live Here Anymore.

Shall we play a game? MGM plans to re-launch the 1983’s “WarGames” with director Seth Gordon at the helm. Gordon recently directed the upcoming comedy “Horrible Bosses.” He is known for a couple of documentaries, which includes 2007’s “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” and last year’s “Freakonomics.” The 1983 film starred Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy as computer hackers who discovered a security back door into a military computer system. The young hackers thought they were playing a video game with the computer only to discover it could possibly launch nuclear missiles to trigger World War III. MGM is also currently developing reboots of sci-fi “Robocop” and horror “Carrie.”Source: Deadline...

Maybe for Morgan Spurlock, making a successful documentary just means finding an appropriate subject to match his unvarying tone. His signature perky, concerned-yet-playful approach seemed insultingly frivolous when dealing with terrorism and the Middle East in Where In The World Is Osama Bin Laden?, or with racial stereotypes in his segment of Freakonomics. But given the less charged topics of fast-food industry practices and American health in his breakout film, Super Size Me, that style was disarming and accessible, expressing a real problem without heavy-handed moralizing or self-importance. Similarly, in his new doc, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, it’s ...

Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief star Logan Lerman is set to star in Seth Gordon’s The Only Living Boy in New York, an indie coming-of-age drama scheduled to start production this fall over six years after its sale to Sony.
Lerman, 19, will play Thomas, a young urbanite who falls for a hip, sexy college-age friend named Mimi after an ecstasy-fueled night of passion. But when she rejects Thomas, he wanders aimlessly through the city and happens on his father having an affair with a 30-something mistress named Johanna. At first, Thomas confronts Johanna, but she ultimately seduces the “boy” and he finds himself caught between a beautiful older woman and his own father. W.F.
