Great Theme
courtney_charles29 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The story was very deep in that the men were just doing the same thing they did in the past. The men left in hopes of returning with money to their family. However, they have changed a lot while they were gone, and now their families don't need them. The men didn't take the changes into consideration, and it caused them a lot of misery. I wish there was more to the story. It was very intriguing.

A Diamond in the Rough
annamrrs17 January 2020
"Espiral" is the kind of movie that entices strong emotions from the audience. I found myself thoroughly invested in the story due to my anger towards the male characters. This film showed me just how different gender roles are in the U.S. compared to Mexico, and I was impressed just how much this movie affected me. However, as good as this film is, I cannot give it a perfect rating. The cinematography and overall quality is on the low side, but that isn't uncommon for a movie made in 2008. All in all, "Espiral" is one of the best foreign films I've ever watched.

Amazing Storyline
abbycartwright-864088 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Overall the movie was fantastic. Mainly because of the various twists & especially how certain characters evoked some simpathy and others just plain hatred, that's just from how the director made them out to be & it just made the film much more interesting & intriguing! The ending made me crave a sequel yet with this plot a sequel would be too cheesy. The plot itself was emotional yet it empowered the women in this story & although the men who left and came back were portrayed as sad for missing out on so much I still felt little pity just because it seemed as though they left to benefit their lives, not their families. It began to look more like a love story until Santiago came back & was disgusted by the same woman he had loved all those years ago yet she was only a little younger than him. I was confused as certain moments yet towards the end my confusion dissipated & everything came together or fell apart I should say for some characters!

How passionate a plot?!
kealeebeau17 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film is a depiction of traditional Mexican work ethic and marital relations. It starts out with the establishment that the town in which it takes place has a women and children heavy demographic. The men are preoccupied with finding work elsewhere or "on the other side". The main plot consists of the paternal hierarchy, this is shown through dowry and the main character, Diamantina, not being able to choose her own spouse for herself. Her true love interest Santiago, was primarily concerned with her, but then shifted his interest to her daughter. There is a lot of forbidden love and domestic abuse throughout the movie. Don Taurino, Diamantina's father only cares about the amount of money or material he can get for his daughter. When Santiago leaves to work for three years he expects to come home to an unwed Diamantina, who has waited for him. To his unpleasant surprise she is betrothed. The plot then gets interesting, but I've already said too much. Espiral is full of tortured love and difficult decisions. This drama keeps you on the edge of your seat. Attempting to figure out the plot is the most excited aspect of the film. I would recommend this movie to anyone trying to spruce up their Spanish speaking skills. The end is upsetting, but the realistic factors are the most compelling in my personal opinion.

Telenovela Gold

This movie is pretty fantastic, jumping between timelines and dramatic stories to portray an "edge of your seat" feel. Focusing on ideas such as poverty, single motherhood, and immigration, this movie still holds up today. If you cannot speak Spanish, English subtitles are provided, which is also helpful if you are a native English speaker trying to learn Spanish. Overall, this movie is a twist filled diamond in the rough.

it had good ideas

Warning: Spoilers
I thought that the themes it wanted to explore were good, but the execution could be better. For example, I wish the movie challenged the way the women were treated more and didn't just accept some of the behavior. Also, the movie had great music, sound design, and cinematography. The acting was good sometimes and the writing was okay.

Intriguing and Interesting!
daniellapelc17 January 2020
"Espiral" lives up to it's name in the way that the plot twists and turns throughout the past and present, all in the effort to reach the ultimate conclusion that will leave any viewer in a state of shock and awe. The film depicts the stories of two families and mothers, both struggling against the almost cursed-nature that resonates around them. In this small town, it felt like tragedy when the men abandoned their families 15 years ago to go North; however, the ending of this film will make everyone wish that they had simply never returned. Watching this movie is an experience like no other!

One of the best Spanish movies I have seen!
relittle17 January 2020
This movie was incredibly interesting, especially to a non-native Spanish student like myself. I was so captivated by the acting and the emotions that the actors and actresses portrayed. I think the movie gave an accurate portrayal of one way life in Mexico. The plot of the movie was fascinating, and there were great plot twists. The viewers can love and hate the characters, but each one has depth and dimension. I thought the way that the story moved from the past to the present gave the viewer a broader understanding of the stories behind the characters which was great work on the filmmakers' part. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes a thrilling and entertaining drama movie.

Review of Espiral
omjinwala17 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Espiral is a really exciting and entertaining movie. The movie shows families in Mexico living through poverty. Most of the males of the town go away to America to ear money for their families and themselves. A daughter of a very stubborn father wants to marry a poor Indian man, Santiago, but her father denies because they don't have great amounts of money. Santiago therefore goes to America to earn money to be able to marry her. Families now mainly only consist of daughters and mothers. The people of the family have to remain strong, and make money to survive without the males. The movie is filled with plenty of surprises, overall it is a very good movie. I truly recommend this movie for both, Spanish and English speaking people, because there are subtitles provided!

Greatest Foreign Film I've Seen
cpflynn-1012417 January 2020
This movie is incredibly underrated. The shots that include the mirrors to symbolize the relation of mother and daughter are unlike anything I've seen in even domestic films. The themes of poverty, motherhood, and immigration all manage to blend together perfectly despite being vastly different. Being bilingual, I was able to understand much of the movie without english subtitles, however the subtitles were incredibly helpful for my monolingual friends. It begins with a light-hearted feel and ends on two drunk men smoking swishers and crying. The emotional roller coaster of all the twists and turns take one on a journey of highs and lows. I would recommend this movie to both bilinguals and monolinguals alike.

WHAT A FILM!!!!
emmablack-3232517 January 2020
This film is thrilling from start to finish. I love the symmetry of the story, and how twisted and unexpected its turns are. Also, viewers can't help but love the women in this story, they are strong and goodhearted. Additionally, the men in the story leave you questioning your morals and whether they should deserve forgiveness and second chances. The story is full of plot twists that will leave you on the edge of your seat, munching your popcorn. The film work is beautiful too, full of powerful, beautiful and symbolic scenes that immerse you into the film. The ending will leave you rocking in your seat as well!! Please, if you can, give this film a chance!

The movie was very good overall, but there were some scenes that were upsetting. The movie portrays the reality of how people used to suffer being in poverty.

Telenovela
geenadgarcia17 January 2020
From start to beginning, this movie was very interesting. I felt that it was so relatable especially since most of my family is mexican. My grandparents were born and raised in Mexico and what this movie shows like poverty and immigration is what my grandparents had to deal with and that's why my parents didn't have as much growing up. At some points in the movie it gets a little confusing because they start off with the present and go back about 15 years before and then a few years pass by and then they are right back to the present. So you really have to pay attention in order to understand what is fully going on. Plus if you are learning spanish, this movie would be great to watch and it has english subtitles if you get lost. Overall, very good movie I would recommend to anyone especially if your learning the language.

Pretty Good
lyrielatodd17 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is pretty decent. It has a good story line with a wholesome ending, emphasizing the roles of strong female characters. My favorite character was Magdalena because she was the only sensible character, and she beat up Santiago, who had to be the most evil person in the movie. He was a crusty predator and only loved Diamantina for her looks, which is obvious when he immediately falls in love with her daughter. I would recommend this movie; it is perfect for playing in the background when you are doing something else, trying to fall asleep, or if you are looking for a women-centric film because it is an exciting, uneventful, heartbreaking, and uplifting story about the strong matriarchal societies in rural Mexico.

THE Telenovela
floralprint17 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had many interesting twists. In the movie, it took place in a small poor town in Mexico where there are no men and starts off with the present, then flashes back 18 years ago. if you want to watch a movie that makes you yell at the tv this is the movie for you. this movie was also an eye-opening that shows you how much poverty is in Mexico. In the film at first you would have never thought that it would be SOO good but it was.
